I hope he made a synthesizer on his time off. :D

Noticeable benefits of going FRFR cab over guitar cab/power amp.

I'd imagine you feel like you got a new rig. Check those new fender cabs!

    EL34 tubes for Rectifier

If they are anything like the Mark series amps, I enjoy the output of the EL34 a bit more for smaller rooms. The 6L6 sound more present and bolder, with stronger cleans.

    Factory Presets

I guess you could reinstall them?

Let's show some love! What is the thing about the Axe3 that made you grin recently?

It sounds like a tube amp, but plays easier.

    Axe-Fx III Firmware 23.05 Release

It's much more fun when people notice how talented you are. Without that push, many artists would fizzle.

Idea: A randomization switch for component values based on tolerance differences

I think the accuracy approach that the team has focused on is perfect. It need be no more complicated than that IMO.

PRS out-Mesa'd Mesa Boogie PRS MT-100

It seems like a perfect fit for a band like the Black Keys. I'd stay in the Boogie lineup for my money though.

Dyna-cab, general consensus is that they're "better" than legacy?

For me, moving the mic around is much quicker to get to a point that works for the part. It allows me to take any amp in the box and make it work, with IR's I didn't have the time.

BUY AN AMP FOR A WEEK IN THE AXE 3

When I started playing guitar, the thing I enjoyed the most was taking a sound and creating a part that brought the voice to life. Switching through the presets in the GSP21 always felt like a pleasant surprise and both my friends and I enjoyed seeing what we could create on the spot. Focusing...

Switching from Mark IV to Axe-Fx III

I don't have anything that sounds as good as my Mark IV, including the FIVE. That's among Marshall, Fender, and at one point Vox. Axe FX is a bit different overall and to me it's not 1 to 1, so try to keep both for a bit until you are ready to commit.

New to Fractal coming from Tube amps

Why? Because you can play a similar sound at a drastically reduced volume, which is for me the primary use of a modeler.

    New Fishman Pro EQ Question

You can use the output 3/ input 3 for connections. Make sure to mind the volume of Out3 on the front panel. I have not tried it, but here is a video showing it in action.

    New Fishman Pro EQ Question

It may be useful to put in it the FX loop so you can place the block wherever you like in the chain. Any reason why you wouldn't use the built in EQ's and use channel switching?

How good is the Axe into a tube power amp or even a really good SS power amp or even FRFR?

Anyone tried feeding a Mesa Road King yet? Wondering if the el34/6l6 tube switching is worth it's weight.

    Axe-Fx III Firmware 22.00 Public Beta #2 (Beta 7)

I'm a factory preset guy. It's always been fun for me to turn the knob on a piece of rack gear and force myself to make music that compliments the sound. It started back with the GSP-21 and it's been one of my favorite things about playing guitar ever since. That said, I have never been a fan...

    Weird Hum Issue

Thanks for typing all that up, very interesting. Every guitarist has these issues at some point and they really make it tough to have a good time. Maybe a power conditioner could help? Seems like you have the problem isolated to the house at this point.

Save the date - Live tutorial - Mesa Mark IV Free Preset

It's such a great amp, I have a FIVE as well.. but right now the IV is the main amp. Went back to 6L6's since being Simul-class for so long and am really appreciating the extra headroom and punch. Sick amp.

    Axe-Fx III Firmware 22.00 Public Beta #2 (Beta 7)

I've been holding off trying the beta out of fear, and love for my current sound. I'm always happy when I plug in lately and sometimes these pivotal updates don't jive with me for a bit. The clips speak for themselves though. WOW

Is there a consensus headphone choice?

DT 1990 Pro's are nice if you like open-back headphones. It's hard for me to imagine headphones sounding better than these.
  30. J.C

    Tuner

You could get a snark for 5 dollars, but I'd just go with the Axe FX tuner unless you suddenly aren't in tune with the band.
  31. J.C

    Before I pull the trigger...

I'm guessing 50% of the performance. It's a cheap decoupling solution for sure.

    Your favorite Daw

Cubase 10.5 here. I have not wanted to upgrade it, either. You have sparked my interest towards Ableton though.
  33. J.C

What happened to the Mark IV clean model?

If it's not listed specifically, it's likely a IV.
  34. J.C

    Before I pull the trigger...

I'm rooting for you Black Fox. IMO Axe FX 3 Mark 1 is more than enough power to get the job done. My preference is open headphones if you need to be silent. You will likely want to save and spend an equal amount on studio monitors for max satisfaction. It's worth it.
  35. J.C

What do people mean when they say modelers "lack the amp feel"?

IMO it's because they owned a POD or equivalent device. It's just awful tone and more importantly "FEEL" being reported. Not many, if any modelers are hitting the high bar Fractal Audio does.
  36. J.C

What do people mean when they say modelers "lack the amp feel"?

You said honestly. What is your point again?
  37. J.C

What do people mean when they say modelers "lack the amp feel"?

It's not literal. The feel comes from what you hear and the way that the device responds to your playing.
  38. J.C

Mesa boogie is teasing the mark VII

On the FIVE the top row is cramped due to the enclosure, as are the eq preset knobs for the 3 channels. You adapt, but it is tight.
  39. J.C

Mesa boogie is teasing the mark VII

Nice of them to put the external switching jacks I loved from the Mark IV. Looks like a Mark V 2.0 to me.

    Axe-Fx Firmware Version 21.02

IMO, the channels on my Mark IV sound vintage and seem to cover a wider range of usability per setting. To me, it's about the feel as much as the tone but it certainly makes a difference. The Mark Five is surgical in it's intent, with Ch 3 filling a more modern role to my ears. It's tighter...
  44. J.C

    Are new amps really needed?

I mostly use the Axe-FX III, however I do love a new amp every so often.

Is the Axe II still worth it in 2022 for bedroom player

I had the pleasure of playing the II recently. It was an eye opener how much nicer everything has become with the III. That said, I am really enjoying the differences between them. It's a beautiful sounding modeler.

    Hooking a pedalboard up to Axe-Fx 3

I am a big fan of the electro harmonix KEY9 type pedals. Turning your guitar into a steel drum is a hoot for "jane says"

Poll: What type of tone/style do you mainly play?

I'm actually a fan of the 2x12 boogie cabs with the top half of the cab open. Best of both worlds from what I've heard.

    TC 1210 Challenge

That sounded great! The Rush sounding progressive part was killer.

Thinking of coming back to AxeFx III. Tell me about Setlists/Songs

Always fun to stretch your legs and try new gear. Do you remember what FW was installed when you decided you liked the Kemper response more? Also, did you like the Kemper better than the Quad Cortex as well?
  55. J.C

    Why not Rivera?

    Iconic tones.. for sure.

Brand new user, what should I know?

The monitoring system you use could make you love or hate the product.
  57. J.C

What Prompted You To Buy A Fractal?

A newborn baby, mostly. Tube amps are just too loud for young ears, and sleep deprived wives. It was the AxeFXII or the Kemper at the time and to me it was an easy call.
  58. J.C

    Axe-Fx Firmware Version 21.00

Getting serious in here! IMO More than a feeling is not only fizzy, it's compressed.
  59. J.C

Is it me or are others in the same boat?

Stick with the traditional setup for the band if that's what you like. Whatever keeps you practicing. I've had a tough time with FRFR, but I sure love my studio monitors for low volume playing.

    Palm Muting Tone Shaping

Interesting thread. I'd never think to tailor a sound for this specifically. Always figured it was right hand technique and a guitar with lighter strings.

Any recommendations for a studio chair / standing desk?

I had severe neck pain from playing a Les Paul sitting down. Something about my position really aggravated a pre-existing condition. Since then I have been looking at .strandberg* guitars for sitting. They are very light and supposedly ergonomic. Saying this because it's possible it's not...
  66. J.C

Why lower gain Cameron CCV amp model feels more noisy than much higher gain Herbie 3?

Try lowering some of the bass or mids possibly? Use the same idea that somewhere in the preset, it's getting out of control. Try going through the basic stuff and create some headroom in the amp, then add your EQ later in the chain. It may get you closer to what you are looking for.
  67. J.C

Why lower gain Cameron CCV amp model feels more noisy than much higher gain Herbie 3?

More treble = more noise in most situations. You have to look at like a race car, if you push it too hard it's going off the road. Guitar tone is always about compromise IMO.
  68. J.C

Most important controls for clean sounds

Probably it's most important to set your input and output levels. As long as you have a solid signal, you won't have to do much other than adjust the trim and gain to taste.

Software synths in Logic through Axe FX

I like running synths into a tube amp one side, and pedals into the CLR the other. Things get juicy.

    Axe-Fx Firmware Version 21.00 Public Beta #4 (Beta 4)

If Cliff moves amps on his own, it's because he WANTS to. :)

    MATRIX is still in business.

I like the CLR, it's just 400$ to expensive IMO. I mostly use it for synth, though.
  72. J.C

    Headphone/monitors for rich sound

I like the Adams, and have the A7X. If you can, spring for the 8". You know you like them already so it's a no-brainer IMO.
  73. J.C

This is a very expensive hobby lol

I'd say buy a Fractal modeler. It's worth it. Great tones, for any genre.. day or night. Plus, all the development fun!
  74. J.C

    Sell FRACTAL at Sweetwater.

Whenever possible, I skip the middleman and get my stuff straight from the source. It makes me happy that Fractal doesn't need Sweetwater to thrive.

    I Found A Marshall I'm Really Enjoying...

I've had a similar relationship with the Mesa amps. It's amazing how well the essence of the amp is captured in the model. It took me quite awhile to move from the first preset though. The Fender amps are just so good! But then the Vox for R&B/Jazz stuff.

Have you delved into pickup swaps?

Great thread! My experience has shown that pickup swaps can be amazing in certain guitars. Some 80's shred guitars really came into their own with a swap. However, I have had awful luck with livening up otherwise muddy guitars. I've given up trying to 'remove the blanket' of my heavier...

    Too Obsessive About USB Choices?

If multiple people hear something.. it probably happened. It's like going to the dr. and they blame some pain a person is having on a mental disorder merely because they have no other explanation. It's just lazy. It stops people from actually investigating things outside the established.
  80. J.C

    Too Obsessive About USB Choices?

Interesting thread. I just wonder if we all would have heard the difference if we were in the room with the engineer. Maybe the original power cable was losing integrity? Sometimes things happen. Physics and science aren't all worked out yet.
  81. J.C

Cubase sees Axe FX3 as output, but not as input?

It sounds like you have gone into Studio - Studio setup and selected AxeFX as your asio driver. If not, start there. Then go to Studio - Audio connections. Make sure you are on the input tab, click in the spreadsheet and you should have some options.
  82. J.C

Admin M@. That was a real treat! Thanks for being awesome.

    The 300th amp model?!

'deja vu' How about one of those Sunn amps Jimi apparently hated? The one I owned was slow and muddy, but had a classic rock mojo that reminded me of a "cleaner" fuzz. It might be different enough to be a worthy addition.
  85. J.C

    Another Axefx vs Amps thread

The reason these threads keep popping up is simple. Expectations aren't met. The expectations themselves maybe unrealistic or uninformed but they persist. It could be the amp in the room vs. recorded tone discussion, but who knows? It's tough to talk sound.
  86. J.C

    Axe-Fx III Firmware Version 20.00

Dweezil's Bassman comes alive for me with FW20. The palm muting effect is pronounced in a way I haven't heard from a modeler, and it is a blast to play around with. Thanks to Fractal and the community for such a great product.
  87. J.C

Goodbye to Dave Smith (Sequential Circuits)

I didn't know he was sick. That is horrible news. Sequential is such a great synth company, I kind of took them for granted. Moog and Sequential are my favorite synths. I hope the person that takes over approaches the position with the same integrity Dave Smith had. He will be missed.

Def Leppard On Jimmy Kimmel - Off Air Peformance

The record is an interesting one and I'm glad someone authentic is still doing Rock music. The obvious call backs to the era came off more like an old friend than a copycat. Now I am inspired to revisit Earth, Wind, and Fire and the Georgia Satellites.. among others.

Why are so many people not relying on their ears anymore?

Thanks for typing this out. It's helpful to know how things work in different circles. I can see why it's important there.
  90. J.C

Why are so many people not relying on their ears anymore?

When you consider that unplugging a single pedal (even in off position) can change your tone, it's easy to see why some people look for help. One of the biggest factors for me is using the right guitar. If you have the proper instrument it's 10x easier to get the sound you want IMO. I'd say...

I could hear the difference. Wasn't in the tone though, I could not hear a difference there. I picked the tone with less noise with relative confidence it had to be the Axe FX. Fractal is the best thing that's ever happened to guitar playing, for many reasons. Can't believe ever one guessed...
