    AFIII Cygnus vs. FW15 chuggz

I posted a similar preset after I tweaked it from my 15.01 settings in this thread: https://forum.fractalaudio.com/threads/chuggnus-quick-mix-test.170287/ - Just turn down the treble / presence to get it the same as the one in this clip!
  13. Sacha

    Cygnus Gain

Rectos sound a bit weird alone but they tend to sit in the mix magically I find, they also have a pretty narrow sweet spot in terms of settings (like a lot of Mesas) and some weird shit can work well like turning off the presence etc. Definitely need to be boosted with a TS to get any tightness...

Axe-Fx III 16.00 Beta 4 "Cygnus" Firmware - Public Beta

Upon further listening I feel like the 5153 is not quite as saturated as I remember and I had to turn up the presence more than I would on the real thing. Still loving that chunky yet tight low end and the general grind tho!
  16. Sacha

    AFIII Chuggnus Quick Mix Test

I can't share the preset because it uses an IR mix I made from the Mikko plugin. It's super simple tho! Tube Screamer gain down volume up mix 50% > 5153 Red (settings below) > IR which is similar to ones in the MegaDjent pack There is no octaver on the low notes if that's what you mean...

Thanks friends! Guitar is my 'custom' parts guitar baritone - It's a Fender Jim Root Jazzmaster body (mahogany) with a 28.5" Warmoth roasted maple neck, Bareknuckle Juggernauts wound like the 8 string set. AFIII Chuggnus Quick Mix Test

I actually wasn't loving the low end for high gain in FW15, seemed a bit loose / muddy for me. That is DEFINITELY fixed now! I think this is the best the lows have ever been. They're punchy and present but not loose and have a nice 3D / movement. The highs are grindy and organic in a really cool...

AFIII Metal DEATHMATCH - Fractal vs. Neural

This is the Nolly on the Neural side; many high gain amps sound pretty similar going in to the same IR. This probably makes sense when the circuits are all just tweaked versions of the same thing (SLO).

  32. Sacha

AFIII Metal DEATHMATCH - Fractal vs. Neural

Hah, it's so simple man: No tweaks beyond this to the preset. The IR is from the Ownhammer Mesa Recto pack Standard Series: OH 412 RECT V70A. Like I mentioned earlier there is a touch of EQ to sit it in the mix (a couple of 1-2db cuts) a bit of compression to accentuate the attack and a...

As is tradition, the votes have skyrocketed one way since the reveal. :tearsofjoy: I didn't screenshot it, but it was about 60/40 for Fractal leading up to today. I myself prefer the Fractal but I always find that funny about blind tests. Yet it wasn't the Metal fans being douchebags in this...

  38. Sacha

AFIII Metal DEATHMATCH - Fractal vs. Neural

Tone 1 is Fractal, Tone 2 is Neural! Looks like the votes agree with me generally; I prefer Fractal in this case. There's a bit more depth / movement / 3D whatever adjective you want to use, and I also find this help it sit better in the mix and leave more space around it. I also prefer the...

AFIII Metal DEATHMATCH - Fractal vs. Neural

I think you are right and that's part of it, but interestingly the waveforms look pretty similar still! Like the 2nd isn't particularly flat or squashed looking compared to the first. I think there might be some other factors at play like maybe masking due to aliasing / oversampling or just...
  41. Sacha

AFIII Metal DEATHMATCH - Fractal vs. Neural

That very well may be! :D Blind tests are tough indeed and my years-of-live-death-metal-damaged-ears certainly aren't golden. Oh, I thought we were done being douchebags in this thread, thanks for yet another useless contribution. Keeps my thread at the top.

AFIII Metal DEATHMATCH - Fractal vs. Neural

I guess I should have specified I was asking for opinions on comparing the two tones to each other; not advice on my production aesthetic / life choices / invitation to get crapped on by Fractal employees and forum mods. I'm not active on TGP but starting to remember why I stopped posting here...
  45. Sacha

AFIII Metal DEATHMATCH - Fractal vs. Neural

Well sure that's true, but the point wasn't to compare the utility of a $2,000 product vs. a $200 plugin since that's not very apples to apples. Also I'm not sure things can be so easily shaped to sound like each other as you contend. These tones are modelling similar chains so they are close...
  46. Sacha

AFIII Metal DEATHMATCH - Fractal vs. Neural

lol OK, Dr. Boomer. PS the gain is at like 12 o'clock, no boost on both amps. Maybe you're just not used to hearing someone pick like a man.
  47. Sacha

AFIII Metal DEATHMATCH - Fractal vs. Neural

I think I get you and not offended over here either! :D These days I think of things much more from a compositional and sound design perspective as opposed to a 'guitar player' one. That is probably reflected in the production where everything is more of a wall of sound and machine-like quality...
  48. Sacha

AFIII Metal DEATHMATCH - Fractal vs. Neural

I didn't ask for advice, I asked which option people preferred comparing two of the 'top dogs' of current amp modelling tech in a modern metal context. Thanks for listening anyway though! I like the production, it's my preferred style, but I can totally understand it's not for everyone.
  49. Sacha

AFIII Metal DEATHMATCH - Fractal vs. Neural

Well this is an 'OK, Boomer' moment, isn't it. I say that in a warmly ribbing fashion, I might be older than you. :p I guess if you don't care about modern Metal music / production than this shootout isn't for you. Much like I don't comment on comparisons of country clean tones or hackneyed...
  50. Sacha

AFIII Metal DEATHMATCH - Fractal vs. Neural

Thanks! Personally I think going into the same IR makes the differences less discernible, since IR is like 80% of the tone, but it's all subjective.
  51. Sacha

AFIII Metal DEATHMATCH - Fractal vs. Neural

That's a douchey thing to say, but thanks for listening I guess! Maybe don't comment if you aren't into modern Metal tones?
  52. Sacha

Why do EQ'd IRs sound bad?

Totally agreed! I just recall Cliff saying there was a technical reason for this, something about messing with the phase accuracy etc. that I wish I could find.
  53. Sacha

Why do EQ'd IRs sound bad?

Not quite but thanks for looking! I think Cliff later said he did indeed here a difference with non-MPT IRs, but anyway that's a different thing!
  54. Sacha

AFIII Metal DEATHMATCH - Fractal vs. Neural

Gotcha. Well, they sound about 5% different where I'm sitting. :) Nothing huge, both are definitely usable, but I prefer one by a small margin.
  55. Sacha

Why do EQ'd IRs sound bad?

Nah man, that's what I'm saying, there was a technical reason why applying EQ directly to the IR itself was not the correct approach. If processed IRs sound good to you then knock yourself out, obviously, but I'm looking for a technical response Cliff gave not cliched advice about picking an IR.
  56. Sacha

AFIII Metal DEATHMATCH - Fractal vs. Neural

Thank you bros! Votes are almost neck in neck with a slight advantage to Tone 1!

Axe-Fx III Firmware Release Version 14.01

Haha, man honestly my patches these days are SO SIMPLE! Literally just the amp block + cab. I only tweak the authentic page with minor moves. The cab IR is SO important my favorites these days are the Ownhammer Mesa Rectos and the ML Sound Lab Djent ones. Seriously if I shared my presets people...

AFIII Metal DEATHMATCH - Fractal vs. Neural

Thanks for listening! I'm not sure what you mean by in person, like thru my studio monitors? Thanks Chris!
  59. Sacha

Why do EQ'd IRs sound bad?

I remember @FractalAudio made a post at some point about the theory behind this, but I can't find it for the life of me. Does anyone remember? Basically it was around that 'mix-ready' and otherwise processed IRs are a terrible idea; an IR should sound like the cab and be captured as neutrally as...

Anyone sell all their tube amps?

Sold my amps, fridge rack and giant pedalboard a LONG ass time ago thanks to Fractal. The first company IMO that got the quality of amps AND FX right along with a great user interface. All started with this dude Cliff posting his crazy powerful looking product on Huge Racks Inc... :D Memories!
  62. Sacha

AFIII Metal DEATHMATCH - Fractal vs. Neural

Just for fun! Both tones are going into the same IR (Ownhammer Mesa Recto) and processing chain (just some light EQ and compression + widening). What do you think? I'll wait until we get some opinions hopefully and then post the answers / my thoughts.
  63. Sacha

Axe-Fx III Firmware Release Version 14.01

I REALLY enjoy the Archon, thanks for adding it! Sure most high-gain amps sound pretty similar thru the same IR, but this thing still has it's own flavor. Nice chewy mids and not overly bright, just like I remember the real thing.

Out of the loop for a long time...any plans for Fractal software sim like Helix Native?

Wow interesting! I always thought it only partially worked at best. Thanks for commenting.
  65. Sacha

Out of the loop for a long time...any plans for Fractal software sim like Helix Native?

I don't think you can un-compile compiled code but I'm not a programmer, also Ilok 3 hasn't been hacked as far as I know. Nonetheless I would still LOVE a Fractal amp plugin. Those screenshots a few years back were a real TEASE!
  66. Sacha

Mix ir in daw or fm3? A big difference!

I found the different IR players I had sounded quite different, different interpolation methods and tastes in coding like everything else I suppose. CabLab was my favorite. :)

    Is noise important?

No need to get salty dude; just trying to have a discussion. Aliasing doesn't exist in analog so that's pretty obviously not what I'm talking about. Some people think some of the artifacts present in analog equipment are desirable or at least beneficial to the overall emulation. Without other...
  68. Sacha

    Is noise important?

I'm not calling anyone out, and I have no 'agenda', don't be a drama queen. I'm just another dude on the internet that likes blabbing about gear and tone. Fractal replied to the post then deleted it, I got an email with the content of the reply anyway since I was subscribed, that's all!
  69. Sacha

    Is noise important?

:tearsofjoy: @FractalAudio I saw your reply in my email; is it not worth discussing even then? I'm just wondering!
  70. Sacha

    Is noise important?

Whenever the real amp vs modeler comparisons are posted, it makes it easier to tell (with high gain at least) the real amp since it will have more noise. My question is does this noise have an affect on the tone when playing? Does it make an improvement? Should it be included (at least...

    Ooooh... Charts and Graphs

I'm not sure that's the case, plugins process audio at the native sample rate in the DAW (+ any applicable oversampling) as far as I am aware.
  74. Sacha

    Ooooh... Charts and Graphs

One nice thing with the Helix Native plugin is you can force over-sample in your DAW by mixing down the guitar tracks in a higher sample rate; this would likely help reduce the aliasing. Although, I still believe the Axe-FX oversamples even further (8 or 16x I think?).

For those wishing for an Archon in your Axe

I'll post the answers in a few days when the poll dies down! I'm sure a lot of high gain amps are based on very similar circuits and then tweaked as Cliff alluded to. Given the multitude of powerful tweaking capabilities I'm sure one could match most amps that might not yet be in the box.
