    Atomic CLR - expectation/experience

Is this a generational thing perhaps? I don't know that the list of artists above (except maybe for Van Halen) really resonates with the up and coming generation of young guitarists who are, ostensibly, the future buyers of gear like this. It certainly resonates with the current Fractal/Atomic...

I/O Instrument Input set to 28% for Les Paul...is this what others are experiencing

I'm not sure exactly what you mean by specs. The technical specs of the pickups listed in my original post are easily obtainable online, but more to the point, they are common pickup models that lots of folks here are using and yet they don't seem to have trouble tickling the red with them. Yes, me. :? I set up my brand new Axe-FX II yesterday and tested it with five different humbucker-equipped guitars. Factory settings on the Axe, and even at Instrument input level set to 100% I could never get it to tickle the red no matter how hard I strummed. The guitars I tested (using the...

What floor controller is this guy using???

Interesting. The LF Pro seems to be superior, features-wise, to the MFC-101. I'm surprised anyone would trade an LF for an MFC-101 if it is as flexible as its fans say it is. Does it all come down to reliability or something?

Axe Fx II, It's not Hype (IMO)

I've seen this stated several times in this thread, so far, and I think it needs to be clarified: he is not entitled to his opinion, he is only entitled to his informed opinion, at least if he is going to air it publicly. If his opinion, no matter how earnestly held, comes from a place of...

    LCD burn-in potential?

Having an on/off switch introduces unacceptable risk? Countless multi-effects boards have on/off switches and are used daily for professional gigging. I'm not sure I understand how adding an on/off switch would present a problem in this regard.
  12. zslane

    LCD burn-in potential?

I could do that. At the moment I am taking advantage of its ability to draw phantom power from the Axe-FX via the 7-pin MIDI cable. I didn't realize that the phantom power path was directly routed to the MIDI connector and wasn't switched along with the Axe-FX's power.
  13. zslane

    LCD burn-in potential?

I guess subjecting a MIDI cable and the connector on the MFC to the wear and tear of frequent plugging/unplugging is preferable to an on/off switch? Most of the devices in my home that can't be turned off except by unplugging them are cheap pieces of low-budget consumer electronics junk. It's...

    LCD burn-in potential?

Since the MFC-101 doesn't have an on/off switch, is there the danger that the LCD will suffer from burn-in since the device is left on at all times? Even when I turn off my Axe-FX, the MFC is still on and drawing power. Somehow this seems like a design flaw to me.

Petrucci using his AxeFX in the studio

I guess he really was just talking about it as an effects processor ("rack fx"). I'd be curious to hear why he likes it better than, say, an Eventide. I am not as impressed with "real world amps" as you seem to be. As such, I don't perceive my modest FRFR system as "falling short" nearly as much as you do. Therein lies the vast gulf separating us from possible common ground on this issue, I think.
  33. zslane

Jay Mitchell and the power of flat response

Well, I think it is a compromise in the sense that you have to turn off the cab sims in order to make use of a guitar cab. I think Scott's approach is the smartest, and should be any FRFR proponent's goal. Unfortunately for me (and probably for many), I am not in a position to create a testing/listening environment like Scott's, so I will alway be dealing with a compromised set of personal presets.

Tonight: first gig with Atomic FRFR

True. But my guess is that "too hot" in Philip's case wasn't the extra 8dBu (past standard "line level") the Axe-FX is capable of at full output. It was the extra 40-50dBu past mic level that was the culprit.

Jay Mitchell and the power of flat response

Ah, okay, well I thought we were talking about FRFR systems as a whole (a power amp is rather useless all by itself, except as a possible heat source). The new MATRIX GT800FX. THE amp for THE Axe-Fx

Fletcher-Munson aside, I'm assuming that an amp of the price and stated quality level of the Matrix series doesn't sound texturally different from one volume level to the next. How do you use the effects loop in the axe-fx

One implication of this, however, is that you can't get the same effect of power stage distortion occurring after a modulation effect as you would have in a real amp. It does strike me as a little inflexible not to be able to rout an fx chain between the virtual pre-amp and virtual power amp...

Tonight: first gig with Atomic FRFR

The output of the Axe-FX is not "very hot" it is merely line level. A lot of PA boards are set up to receive mic level, not line level, on their XLR inputs. Line level signals will distort when fed to a mic level input. That's what pads (and trim pots) are for, and that's presumably what the...

If the Atomic is as linear as Tom suggests, then it should be very transparent (i.e., flat response), and shouldn't be doing anything on its own to add any kind of "in the room feel" at all. That's not the job of a sound reinforcement system, that's the job of the Axe-FX and the cab IR you...
