Solved: That's a bit...

Just get your hands on the older driver, I might have it laying around here somewhere, I'll have a look. For what it's worth, all of my studio Mac Pro's run 10.6.4. Logic can be a complete bastard with 10.8.x and 10.7.x was a write off. I'll upgrade when I can use Logic at home on current OS'...

How to dial out harshness (V10)?

Yek's question is a very good one. I loaded the factory presets for the first time since FW 1 to see whether some of the complaints were down to the presets and they're, if anything, quite boomy and not at all harsh (5150's aside).

I do understand that thinking, however, a real guitar cab would not put out anywhere near that range of frequencies. I narrow it down to something close to what the real speaker can produce most of the time.

That's a far cry from how I'd set that amp, but, I'd probably tweak high and low cut in the cab block. 20hz to 20khz is pretty nuts.

I think if I used the Axe live I'd no doubt feel the same. As I just use them in the studio, I'm constantly starting fresh for new projects anyways so it's much less of a hassle for me come FW time.

The clip lights come before the output knob, they're an indication of what's going on digitally in your patch. Decrease the level in the amp block to stop the clipping and then use the output knob to compensate for volume loss.

Crazy Fuzz

My current band is a doom/stoner/psyche band, lots of gnarly fuzz goin on! I don't really use the Axe much with this band but if I do, I put the real fuzzes in the FXloop of the Axe and place the loop block first in the chain. But yeah, for the most part, this band is pedalboards and amps.

Yeah, back in the days of tape. Gain staging and recording levels are a bit too deep for me to go in to right now, I'd suggest Googling. I'd be happy to discuss further when I'm not so pushed for time though.

Do I need a powered amp?

I think the only thing you'd gain is a pair of nuked QSC's. Powered speakers contain amps already. The Matrix is for use with passive speakers or guitar cabs etc.

Does digital clipping damage the unit?

@jamn4jc There should be no reason to clip in a patch. Boosting the levels within your patch after the wah is not gonna get you where you want to be. The clip lights indicate what's going on within the grid, they don't reflect what's going on with the output knob on the Axe, if it's not...

I'd jump in to the cab block and low cut around 100hz and then tweak either side of that to taste. I don't have a CLR so I have no idea how they sound, but that's generally a good place to start playing with low cut.

I have the exact same thing across 12 Les Paul's with a variety of pickups, regardless of height, across over 30 amps and via both of my Axe II's. It's not an Axe problem, though it's so much more noticeable on the Axe. I put this down to the Axe being hooked up to monitors and everything else...

Just a couple things that come to mind. High cut and low cut in the cab block are worth a look. A regular guitar speaker has much narrower range than a frfr. Did you turn power amp modeling back on?

Stupid question!

Technically the Grain does run parallel to the neck. The figure (flame/quilt) runs perpendicular to that. I could hazard some guesses as to why but I don't know the definitive reason so I'll leave it to a builder to chime in!

Adjusting monitor level

Depends how you're routing the audio, are you monitoring your record track via Cubase? If so, turn down the track fader, I assume it's similar to Logic in that it'll record the full strength signal, just attenuate the monitoring level.

This is exactly how I have my banks. Bank A for my personal tones, B for other bands I'm working with and C for experiments. I then keep a couple of other banks "off Axe" that are things I've moved on from but were cool enough at the time to keep around incase I want to revisit.

Les Paul. Which one??

Yeah, both Custom Shop. The Axcess is thinner indeed and has the contoured heel and body scarf. It just plays like a dream and has an amazing tone. The Class 5 is Swiss Cheesed but rather than the 9 large holes it has 15 smaller ones. For me, I couldn't really care less about chambering/weight...

This. I've been playing and collecting Les Paul's for 20 odd years, I'm also a Gibson dealer. Out of my whole collection my favourites are a 2011 Chambered Custom Shop Axcess and a 2010 Custom Shop Class 5.

^^ Customs are Swiss Cheesed also. It's pretty much only the Historic series that aren't. Edit: New Customs are also shipping with Richlite fretboards.

Which are your main guitars and why?

I have a LOT of Les Pauls of various vintage and model but by far and away this Custom Shop Axcess is hands down the best guitar I've ever played in my life. It plays like nothing else and the tone... oh my... The Tone. Suhr Aldrich Pickups. Second is actually a recent buy. A NOS 2010...

Recording my tones-Problems

Mebee recording too hot. Aim for somewhere between -12 and -18db in to your DAW. Give it volume on the master bus with whatever you use.
