To my ears, the have a very narrow sweet spot. Low level, they sound clean, a bit more they are round and warm, a bit more and they compress and dull the sound (yet they have lots of highs)... the spl for right spot is outrageous, fit for an arena! :)
Yep, and that's true of the 50W version too, they're almost unusable in small venues, unless you pair them with a single low sensitivity speaker... But by doing so I fried 3 or 4 speakers due to the amp spitting out much more power than what it's rated for (I discovered this a couple years too late).

Otoh, a few years back I bought the 20w "little D" DR20 version and that coupled with its 1x12 is pretty much perfect volume wise for small venues and rehearsal rooms, and on its 0.5W mode even for bedrooms.
But in the end decided to sell it anyway cuz it didn't give me anything I couldn't have with my FM9 tone-wise.

Here's a little demo of that thing I recorded a few years ago (effects coming from the fm9):

And NO click or cues! All feeling and emotions. ❤️
I saw The Who in 1976(?) - I believe it was the last concernt, in Seattle anyway, with Keith Moon on drums. I spent the night in line so that I could get in early to get a good view - festival seating being what it was. I remember that Keith Moon wore headphones on some of the songs. It's been almost 50 years, so my memory may be wrong though. It seemed like the head phones were there to ensure that the tempo was in sync with the arp sequences in songs like Baba O'Reilly and Won't Get Fooled Again. But I've never researched it, so I'm just talking out of my ass on this. I've been to many concerts over the years, and I still remember this concert as one of the very best. Incredible use of lasers, and a rock band of virtuosos. It was a great show!

We basically already have the alembic pre, just select one of the various fender amps with the same preamp/tonestack and turn power amp off.

What we really miss is a way to couple it with the hiwatt power amp, i.e. this: https://forum.fractalaudio.com/threads/gilmour-pulse-amp-model.150488/
I have an Alembic f2b and tried to tonematch it in Gilmour settings with several Fender preamp models in the past. I could get somewhere in the ball park for eq shape adding extra eq block, but harmonics were not alike.

If we get a proper Alembic pre with Hiwatt power amp model, I’d expect it should behave much better and a lot simpler.

I can get all gilmour tones I want using other amp combinations in Axe Fx, but it would be really nice to have that “Pulse amp” in the box because it would work also to the FM3 (which I can’t replicate at this moment)

For everyone on the Albemic preamp subject, this is all from Gilmourish.com what was used on the division bell.

Fender 1959 Bassman 50W reissue combo
– 4×10″ Eminence Blue Alnico speakers and 2x6L6, 3x12AX7 and 5AR4 (Rectifier) tubes.
Hiwatt 1970s SA212 50W combo
– 2×12″ Fane Crescendo speakers and 2xEL34 and 4x12AX7 tubes. Modified to allow a normal and brilliant input combination.

What he used on A momentary lapse of reason.

Fender 1984 Super Champ 18W
– 1 10? Electro Voice speaker and one of each tube 12AX7, 12AT7, 6C10, 6V6GTA, 6V6GTA.
Hiwatt 1970s SA212 50W combo
– 2×12? Fane Crescendo speakers and 2xEL34 and 4x12AX7 tubes.
Gallien-Krueger 250 ML MK II 100W
– 2 channel solid state with 2x 4.5? speakers. David used this for boost with the speakers bypassed.
Fender Princeton combo
Fender Concert combo

Delicate sound of thunder.

3 Fender Twin Reverb II 1983 105W heads
– 4x6L6 tubes. Two mains and one head was a spare. Only used for 1987 tour rehearsals and main tour.
3 Hiwatt DR103 All Purpose 100W heads
– with Mullard 4xEL34 power tubes and 4xECC83 pre-amp tubes and modified for linked normal and brilliance inputs and additional input points allowing to bypass the preamp stage (one head was a spare). Replaced the Fender Twins in early 1988.
Mesa/Boogie Mark III Simul-Class 85W head
– 2xEL34 and 2x6L6 tubes. Connected via send/return to main board for boost/overdrive.
Alembic F-2B tube preamp
– Main preamp for the rig.
2 WEM Super Starfinder 200 cabinets
– with 4×12? Fane Crescendo speakers.
2 Hiwatt SE-4123 cabinets
– with 4×12? Fane Crescendo speakers.

I would try to copy the division bell amp rig, so mix a bassman and a hiwatt jumped model, since we are talking more the 80's/even more so 90's era.

Already done (timestamped and free preset in my store) ;)

But many Gilmour fans consider his PULSE tones the holy grail, and that was all alembic+hiwatt+doppolas.
Anyway, KitRae's site, even though it has a bit more confusionary organization, is much more detailed and reliable than Gilmourish.

PS: Btw, he also has a page dedicated to the history of the tube driver, worth mentioning since it's related to this update: https://www.kitrae.net/music/Music_mp3_Tube_Driver_Versions.html

Ok, I'm keeping "confusionary", priceless!

Out of all the reasons I could imagine for people liking the way the guitar sounds on Pulse, the Albemic preamp would be pretty far down that list for me.

I built a clone of the Alembic, and I recreated the tone on the Axe-FX by doing A/B comparisons. I shared the settings somewhere at this forum.

My conclusion is that the Alembic is totally unnecessary, specially if you choose an amp with more warmth than the sterile Hiwatt.

Just wanted to confirm whether the Mr Z MZ-8 model has always been this low gain? The other Mr Z models begin to break-up relatively quickly compared to it.
EDIT: for clarity, I should mention that the other Mr Z models break-up at around 5-6 with a strat, but the MZ-8 sounds like there's too little signal going in with the same input gain values. Is the gain pot on the MZ-8 different or something?

The hiwatt sounds absolutely killer for a driven but not distorted bass tone. Idk what about the amp allows it when it’s so clean for guitar, but using the jumped model allows you to set your base tone on the normal channel with the brilliant channel off, then turn up the brilliant channel to get the right amount of drive.

I use this (placed before amp block) which is not far off from stock for the "Classic Vibe" type (bumped a bit on Rate/Level/Mix).

One of the beautiful things that's been happening in the Axefx evolution is that pretty much stock settings just seem to work more and more often.

Slightly hijacking, was there a visual update to AXE-Edit? I don't remember it looking like that.
