Fractal IRs

Really excited about this. Although the 4x12 cabs are great I'd love to see a lot more small cabinets IRs. I have no trouble getting huge sounds but there are (currently) not as many small cab options. My friend brought over a couple of his old classic amps, champ, etc. and I had a hard time capturing the sound. (this was before tone matching was available) Anyway this is very exciting. Its going to be a great year.
 
Not possible. We don't have the necessary testing environment. You can't do far-field IRs in a studio. You need a very large area, either quiet outdoors or something like an airplane hanger. The first reflection needs to be beyond the duration of the IR itself. This implies the nearest wall or ceiling needs to have an excess path length of at least 10m (33 ft).

Cool...great to see focus on IR's and that part of the tone chain...I'm using the Fractal Mad Dog 4x12 cab IR just on it's own for several presets; I'm 'connecting' really well with it and it'll be wild to get more from FAS.

Oh Yes! This is, what i was really expected, when Scott P. post the first time a clip with a "new FAS" IR - we all know now what it was.

When Cliff post some of his tonematchings i felt always, that these sounds where always more balanced and i have to do a lot to get similiar "balanced" results, when i tweak and try to find the right cab for a dedicated Amp.

So, what i think would be really cool, if we FAS shoot original speakers and cabinets from the original Amps, Cliff has modeled. Particularly for all Combo`s which find the way into the Axe-Fx II. I think, This would be a really advantage, weh we get the possibility of "matched Amp+Cab-IR" "offers" out of the box ... Specially for the exotic ones, like the Gibtone Scout, Super Verb, Fox ODS, etc ... i think, this would be very helpful to get easier the "real tone" of the originals ... because we know all:

I can't overemphasize the importance of IRs. The amp modeling is down to the point that it is so close to the real amps that it doesn't matter anymore. It's all about the IR.

The Axe-Fx II was designed with a lot of extra storage space for factory IRs and I would like to take advantage of that soon.

Not that you asked my opinion, and I know I'm swimming against the tide here, but I would actually prefer a different focus: OwnHammer and Redires have the IR territory pretty well covered, IMHO. But nobody but Fractal can work on getting the drive pedals to sound their best. If you could work on getting them as close to dead-on as the amp models are, that would be my preference.
 
Please! Something other than V30's or G12T-75's that have been done to death. It's just me, but I don't care for either one of those speakers and it seems that at least 50% of the stock IR's are those two!

Agreed. I cannot get the bloom my real Zendrive has; this may be the operator (i.e., myself), but tweaking the 1st page of knobs doesn't get me there.

Is that using a ground plane measurement?

I figured some live rooms rooms in recording studios would be big enough.

For HiRes = 2048 samples @ 48000 samples per sec = .0427 sec = 43 ft. If you are measuring @ 1m, 3ft, and the speaker is in the center of the room, the ceiling and walls would need to be 21.5 ft from the microphone + 3ft = 24.5ft.

But for LowRes - 1024 samples, that would be 13ft, within the bounds of recording studio drum rooms.

In my opinion, some LowRes far-field IR's, done professionally would be a great value add; in addition to the pro close-miced ones too.

But why is it that even if OH and RW have covered the IR territory that people keep coming back to the Fractal IRs? I am not an IR specialist but would reckon that the Fractal IRs correspond to the modelled amps best. Maybe it is why Fractal does not try to change the IRs to what people may like but capture what the cabs deliver. Don't know though but lately reading about adjusting something here and something there to meet user's expectations confuses me more and more.
 
The factory IRs were hand-selected by me after auditioning thousands of OH and RW and other IRs. Some of the IRs are custom mixes of mine. My rule-of-thumb was to select as neutral sounding IRs as possible.

However, what I like may be much different than what others like. Some people complain the Axe-Fx sounds too bright. Others say it's not bright enough. It's a no-win situation. This is why I've been harping on capturing IRs. It's personal preference. Producers probably spend more time perfecting mic placement than anything else when getting guitar tones to tape. An IR is the same thing, it's capturing the mic and placement. Encouraging IR capture and sharing those IRs was a goal of mine but, alas, the community hasn't done much in that regard.

FWIW, I don't subscribe to "flavored" IRs (i.e. Warm or Fat or whatever). I do like the idea of using different preamps to capture the coloration of those preamps but I don't feel any additional EQ should be applied.
