AX8 Price Point - At what price do you get upset?

One thing that's being overlooked is that the AX-8 has cab modeling (FX-8 doesn't) that will be handled by the same processor as the effects. Which could limit the AX-8's effects ability compared to the FX-8. This could be another advantage for the FX-8 along with the optimized I/O

The boss answered this question today. The cab modeling is NOT handled by the same processor as the effects. Or the amp.

Neither really. They are done in an a separate accelerator so they have minimal CPU loading."

What thread is this quote from?

That's great news. With the single processor in the FX8 it is already easy to exceed the CPU limit. I was concerned that the AX8 would use the same processor for the cab modeling as the effects and that could pose a real problem. With this news I'm confident that the AX8 CPU will handle my needs.

One suggestion for FAS for both the FX8 and the AX8: Set the default Quality setting for the Reverb block to Normal quality instead of High quality. That would help ease a lot of CPU frustration from inexperienced users. There's no way in a live playing situation using either the FX8 with an amp, the AX8 going direct, that anyone would ever be able to hear the difference if the default value was set to Normal quality.

Close up of screen at 5:08. I don't do amp modeling or anything, but why would you ever need to turn your amp/cab models off via the footswitches? That's what it looks like there. Just curious.

Agree with that.

It's my understanding that the foot switches will be configurable so you would not need to have on/off control of amp and cab assigned to a switch. At least I hope it works that way. Guess we'll find out after the amp show.

Right. I think you're right about that. Being able to assign the switches on a per preset basis is a huge step in the right direction!

You can also change the x/y state of the block with the footswitch I think, and that's very useful

I don't remember off the top of my head, does the cab block have an xy control?

If so, I still would not assign an amp or cab block to a footswitch. I would use scenes to change both at once if I were going from a Fender amp tone to a Marshal.

Edit: I just checked. Yes, of course, the Cab block has X Y settings.

Not that it matters at this point, but I have always thought the AX8 would be similarly priced to the FX8. I figured it would be a little higher due to the added cost of the second processor and the lights on the knobs. In light of Cliff's post explaining that the FX8 has some expensive components to achieve true bypass I'm going to guess that the component cost will be more of less equal from a manufacturing standpoint and that the AX8 will be "aggressively" priced the same as the FX8.

And in responce to the OP, in no way would I feel like I overpaid for my FX8 if the AX8 is priced the same. If the AX8 was less, then I would feel like I overpaid for the FX8. Hopefully pricing and availability will be announced at the amp show today!

Hi!

To be honest - I am already upset because we don´t know the price right now.

Hey, we are the customers. Something is completely wrong here.

Yours

My guess is that th AX8 will cost $1349. Stealing from ethomas, but no wait list. Ship in 2 weeks.

Yes, I believe you are correct. About $1350 sounds right.

You just know Cliff is going to price it under the $1499 retail price of the Helix. The Helix will be able to be purchased new by many people for $1275-$1350 because of the constant 10-15% off you can easily get from the many online retailers. I pre-ordered mine for $1199 shipped when they were first announced.

The AX8 will obviously be a fixed retail price from Fractal without any discounts anytime soon. So I think it makes sense for Cliff to price at $1350. He said the price was going to be aggressive!

Not knowing the price right now...if that's something completely wrong, then you live in a very gentle world, my brother. :)
