The answer is that there are indeed work-arounds, but you're going to have to try it in your own setup to see if you have a problem. If you come across a problem, then come back here and someone will help you with a solution.

Follow-up: how do the mic sims in the Axe-Fx actually work? I did some searching here and through Google, and despite finding an entertaining thread by one "Tone-Freak" I didn't find what I was looking for. Are the mic sims just EQ curves, or are they somehow impulse responses as well?

Hard tail backup is the smartest. You only need one. This is also a principal benefit of playing a 7-string: one can play songs in standard, half-down, full down, "drop D," B standard, etc., all on one guitar.

The Axe-Fx II will be the primary product moving forward and will receive the most attention and work in respect to updates. I suspect FAS will release a few amp models and whatever is possible in terms of updates for the first generation units, but they are not capable of handling much more...

FWIW the Carvin power supply's switching frequency is a miserable 130 KHz compared to the 1 MHz of the Matrix amp. That's a valid design change for the better, not that everything else designed around the power section is necessarily better or worse. But a higher frequency means less dead time...

What you said is definitely true. Myself, FWIW, I enjoy replicating tones, so when it comes to covers I like to try to get as close as I can on each song. Not exactly "real" or "organic" but definitely a progressive way to look at cover band gigs.

Pickup swapping is fun but can become a bit... consuming. Try some pickups with Alnico 5 magnets instead of the Alnico 3 pickups the Highway One comes with. Maybe Texas Specials, or something from Seymour Duncan. BKP or Lollar if you want to get boutiquey. I'd still give 10's a try, but you'll...

Thanks Yek! I have to admit, one weird thing about the active version is that it seems very quiet. I have to almost max out any mixing board I plug it into in order to get an appreciable signal. What is this NullFilter of which you speak? I used a PEQ block with no EQ shaping but added like 10...
