Caligula's Horse New album OUT NOW!

So glad you're all digging it :) Thanks for the extremely kind words everyone! orpeus: at this stage the answer is a tentative no. Moments was independently released, whereas River's End is licensed to a record label in Australia. Basically it just makes it a bit more restrictive as to where...

Caligula's Horse New album OUT NOW!

Azael: A bit of both. Rhythms were generally done with the II, or occasionally with real amps, but most of the lead stuff was done on my Ultra through a Mesa Simulclass 2:90 and an Engl VT Pro Cab. I use the Cornford for solos, with the Tubescreamer block set to 0 drive. Rhythm is mostly the...

Caligula's Horse New album OUT NOW!

Thanks Loquenau, glad you liked the production! I wanted the rhythm to be mid heavy, but avoid the over-the-top thud thing that djent bands are doing. The production in general was a move away from that sound. Nothing is over-compressed; the master is quiet with lots of room; and rather than...

Caligula's Horse New album OUT NOW!

    New Caligula's Horse Single

Steely Dan are pretty much my greatest musical influence when it comes to melody and harmony, despite the practically unrelated genres. I love that you heard that! Lots of stolen Dan chords....

    Caligula's Horse Video Clip Release

Thanks Yek! Unfortunately we had to use a different master for the video (long story), and it is much more compressed in that middle section than my original master (the one on the album), but I don't think it's too bad.

    Caligula's Horse Video Clip Release

    New Caligula's Horse live video!

Hi all, I'm Sam Vallen from and Australian progressive band called Caligula's Horse. We just finished putting together a live in the studio clip of one of our more eclectic tracks. It's a three way Axe FX deal: both guitars and bass. Caligula's Horse - Vanishing Rites LIVE In the Studio -...

    Caligula's Horse playthough video

I do love my old Universe, it's a fairly rare colour to find too.... As for the sounds I posted my Ultra patches ages ago (I use an Ultra, Zac, the other guitarist in the video uses the Axe FX II), and my Ultra patches probably wouldn't be too relevant to Axe FX II users but it's basically a...

Hey all, My band Caligula's Horse recently did a run-through of a guitar instrumental called Singularity, from our debut album Moments Of Ephemeral City (which I've posted about a bit in the past). We're an Australian progressive metal band, and we take influence from artists like Devin...

    Caligula's Horse - new EP

So my band Caligula's Horse has just put together a two track EP called Colossus, It's about as proggy as our old stuff, inspired by Devin Townsend, Opeth, Frost and Porcupine Tree. We used the Axe FX Ultra for all of the guitar and bass, and it's all self-produced and released. Have a listen...

Caligula's Horse LIVE IN THE STUDIO VID

;) Totally. I love Devin Townsend, I love Mikael Akerfeldt but when it comes to my own music I don't think the screamed vocals are necessary. You should have a listen to our album, heaps of massive harmonies and stuff... Caligula's Horse. You can download the album for free!

Caligula's Horse LIVE IN THE STUDIO VID

Yep, just running a line out from the Axe straight into the SSL desk into Pro Tools. I usually run FRFR, with a monitor (or the PA) but as you can imagine the less spill in this setup the better! As a result I only heard myself through headphones which is less than ideal, but the mix was better...

http://samvallen.bandcamp.com/track/open-up Here's a song I put together for a uni assignment on "genre specific recording" (lol). It's basically a pop song in the guise of modern metal, and it's got a decent amount of wanky guitars and chuggy riffs... The guitar sound is done with the...

Around 90% of the guitar tones are the Axe, I also used an Engl Powerball, a Mesa Mark 1, and an Orange Tiny Terror here and there. Don't feel guilty about not paying for it, just recommend it to a friend or two! Thanks!

Caligula's Horse, another sample track from my Axe FX coated album

Very flattered guys, thanks a lot! Indeed, I'll be bringing the overheads down a bit when I put the album up, keep those cymbals in check..... The final session for the album's on Wednesday, it should be out fairly soon after;) Also, I'm a massive fan of A.C.T! Funny you noticed that. Frost...

Caligula's Horse, another sample track from my Axe FX coated album

Thanks mate, that's a really great compliment. In saying that "Alone In The World" is by far the longest song on the album, and I'm inclined to agree that 11 minutes is bordering on the gratuitous... I really appreciate all of you taking the time to check the tracks out. The album will be done...

Caligula's Horse, another sample track from my Axe FX coated album

Totally, I adore Zappa, and since you mention it there's a lot more guitar/marimba type things on the album itself, which is something he's very known for. A massive hero of mine. And now that you mention it I may have gone a tad over the top with the overheads.... Might tweak those when I put...

Caligula's Horse, another sample track from my Axe FX coated album

Hi all, So I posted a track called "Alone In The World" up on these forums a few months ago, to a great reception. Now that my album's almost finished, I thought I'd post another track to see if I can generate a little bit more interest.... The song's called "Equally Flawed", and along...

Sam Vallen - Axe FX-coated album

Thanks heaps guys. Sam Vallen - Axe FX-coated album

Thanks mate. Indeed the feel and vibe are a far more important aspect of the music to any of it's technicality to me. I should also mention for anyone stumbling across this that I've got a thread floating around with the patch for the main lead sound (found in the lengthy middle solo section)...

Sam Vallen - Axe FX-coated album

Hi all, I'm building up to the release of an album I've been working on for a while, called "Caligula's Horse". It's progressive, heavy and a lot of different adjectives, as well as being rather guitar centric. I've released the first track for free download (for the next couple of days), as a...

Anyone nailed a good 8-string tone, that want to share?

Excellent patch biggness, I love how much you can learn and pick up ideas from other peoples patches. The chorus for example is a great touch for this case..... I'll be playing with the multiband comp a lot more too....

For those looking for John Petrucci Tones!

Brilliant job mate, that's as close a version of the Petrucci rhythm tone as I've ever heard. I definitely second the more mid-heavy lead tone motion! Maybe something from the earlier DT stuff: I'd love a take on the "Under A Glass Moon" solo for eg, but this is hardly a requests thread;)

    UPDATE - rectifier + powerball

I tend to pull the hipass significantly back, somewhere around 60 or 70hz, and then cut some bass a little later on. There's a lot of resonance in those very low frequencies on a low tuned guitar which (to me at least) affect the feel when it comes to low muting etc. In a recording environment...

    UPDATE - rectifier + powerball

Great stuff man, very nice feel to both of them. The cab combo's spot on. I had to cut the hi-pass filter you've got to make it work with my 7-string though;)

Animals As Leaders / Tosin Abasi (Request)

Here's a starting point: "IC: What about your distortion sounds? TA: I’m into blending tones, so for my clean I blend two amps, and then for the distortion I blend two, as well. I’ve been using the Diezel VH4 [Das Metall] setting, which is very mid-rangey, but still has that modern rapid bass...

Animals As Leaders / Tosin Abasi (Request)

Definitely second this request, more so because I'm really curious as to how Abasi gets that massive sound, rather than because it's a tone I'd like to incorporate into my own music. People say the FAS modern and the German cab are good starting points but I'd really like to know what Abasi's...

    John Mayer tones?

Here's what I use when my cover band plays "Waiting On The World To Change". It's not really a John Mayer tone per-se; I haven't A/B'd it in Pro Tools. it's more just a take on a mildly overdriven boutique amp that's somewhere in the ballpark of what Mayer uses. I've spent most of the time on...

    John Mayer tones?

I've actually been playing around trying to replicate some of his milder Two Rock tones, using the Dumble emulations. I'll post my patch tomorrow.

    Guthrie Govan tone

The guitar I used is a 1971 Gibson L6-S, from the research I've done the pickups are amongst the first designed by Bill Lawrence. The guitar has a much warmer and mid heavy sound than any of my other guitars, which are all super strats with high gain humbuckers.
  54. S

    Guthrie Govan tone

Haha, I get told I sound English all the time. My dad's English and the accent's rubbed off on me...... Thanks again guys;)
  55. S

    Guthrie Govan tone

lol, Well I think it sounds like Guthrie! It's certainly a tough tone to nail but I think I'm in the ballpark at least. Anyway, thanks heaps guys, I look forward to sharing more of my patches soon.

[EDIT] - So this is a pretty old thread now. The patch in question has featured all over my album "Moments From Ephemeral City" by my band Caligula's Horse. You can hear the patch and download the whole album (for free if you like) at Caligula's Horse The patch is attached below. I've thrown...
