FM3 Firmware Version 3.02 Beta 1

Hell yes it is.
My experience with modelers was the BOSS GT5 back in the mid 1990's (been playing pro since 1978). Then went back to a Marshall stack for a year. Then the Roland VGA7 modeling amp for a couple of years. Then back to tube amps. Then the Line 6 Vetta amp for a year or so. Then back to a real Bogner Ecstasy. Then I got a Helix in the first batch that Sweetwater had back in October 2015. Used that for 3 years. Then went back to tube amps with a Mesa Boogie TC 50 (which is AWESOME sounding).

But a lot of my gigs are "silent stages"...and even though I have a BOSS WAZA Tube Amp Expander and can run my "real" rig with no cab and just straight to monitors and FOH...it's still too damn big to drag through these Casino/Resorts in Vegas. There just aren't any venues with load in docks. lol

So last year I got a Helix stomp and made myself a pretty nice sounding pedal board rig. Sounds great.

But it is now my backup rig.

This FM3 is the shit! My only regret is that I didn't use Fractal Audio gear years ago.
But I'm here now! :)
So you really know what you are talking about, and Cygnus firmware is just around the corner to make it even better.

I could be going crazy, Some of my amps were sounding different ,louder, cleaner ,mostly Marshall type .Went into global setting ,just spun down to power amp modeling ,and it was off. did that happen with beta, or was it a user mistake ,I don't remember turning it off.guess if it just me ,I guess I did ito_O thing are back to the tone I had:)
There have been random cases of this happening during firmware updates over the years on various Fractal devices...

you usually turn that off if you go through a 4cm in an amp connected to a cabinet (thus using the amp's power section).

  • Improved Bias Excursion algorithms. Bias Excursion values now default to 100%. Existing presets are automatically updated.
Hey @BryantP,

I understand there's a bug that causes excursion values not to default to 100%, though I'm not clear on whether all 3 Bias Excursions (Pre, Power and Power PI) should be set to 100%, or only the Power Amp ones. Apologies if this has already been covered, I wasn't able to find the conclusive answer.

Thanks in advance!

Same here. I tried a few amps setting all to 100% and I’m not sure I liked it. Especially the Atomica high, It sounded like I had a fuzz pedal in front of it.

The bug is known and will be fixed.

I really wish that the Power Amp modelling could somehow be assigned on a per output basis so we could use Output 1 to FOH with PA modelling applied and Output 2 to backline/poweramp+speaker with it turned off

It can’t just take out power amp simulation from the signal after you’ve added more blocks that change the tone. It’s like trying to take out drums from a stereo recording - it’s mixed in already.

You can arrange the Out 1 and Out 2 blocks to accomplish this in the presets you use.

I didnt think that you could do this even with nothing after the amp? Im refering to your last sentence there, it implies that you can bypass the poweramp simulation to one output? I do it by having the cab block only going to output 1 and using the output 2 global eq to 'match' the sound going through my poweramp and cab.

All this talk about bias excursion has gotten me twisting that knob to see what I like. Wow. It's a very powerful was to shape the character of the distortion and compression. I liked the power amp excursion a bit lower than stock on the DC30-86. It stiffened it up just a hair to give the notes more power, and it dropped some nasty 2k-ish nasily highs, which allow me to turn up some other better sounding highs.

Ah, I like that Global EQ idea!! Why didn't I think of that!! I can re-EQ at my SD170 (which is how I do things now) but globally would be a lot easier - thanks!!

Are we actually saying then that the Cab Blocks have an element of PA sim baked into them and both are actually not needed?

here is how i do it...see attached preset, output 1 goes stereo to FOH with cab block, output 2 goes mono to power amp and real cabinet

global eq for out 1 is bypassed, global eq for out 2 is active and adjusted to match the sound of out 1. These can be found on the unit in the io menu

Thanks for the response @yek

I was asking a slightly different question though: while the bug is getting fixed, which Bias Excursion values shall we manually set at 100% in order to get to the ideal default settings, all 3 (Pre Amp, Power Amp, PI) or just some of them? I suspect it's just the Power Amp one, and maybe the PI, but could be wrong.

Just wait for the next release and the release notes.
