Axe-Fx III Firmware Version 12.00 Public Beta #2 (Beta 3)

Having a device in hand won't help much here. These are well-documented circuits and the filter portions of these pedals aren't that mystical. There's little to gain from having one in hand; you can get what you need from a schematic. Everything you need to build a matching filter section for a single-filter pedal is present in the wah block now.

The envelope portions of these circuits, however, are where things take a turn. There could be a wonderful "Mu-Tron" setting in the wah block, but you'll be missing the tuned envelope filter and you'll have to dial in that in yourself. Much of what makes these pedals these pedals is how that envelope is opinionatedly tuned for you. Fractal gear doesn't really offer up opinions on envelope tuning so you have to work that out yourself.

Thankfully you can export your controllers and share the results.

I've been able to dial in my envelope with my main PRS and the wah block now so I'm tracking Mayer's Dead & Co mu-tron sounds with enough feel and accuracy you'd never know it's Memorex and not live now. Would it work for you? Maybe, but probably not, because that envelope is going to need a bunch of work on your end to get it right.

Right. I think the issue is that a lot of folks (including me) have attempted to get that iconic Mutron III sound and feel like they're coming up short. It's just an ask, and if the answer is no, that's fine. I'm sure there wouldn't be an Electric Mistress in the new firmware if people hadn't asked about a million times, and that's all we're doing here.

The difference with the Mistress is the circuit topology is very specific to the Mistress and that topology is encompassed in one, single block. The Mu-Tron is split between the wah block and the envelope filter. At best, I'd hope for a Mu-Tron wah block update that pre-set the parameters and matched their inductor.

this is one of the few things we don't have and would make a great addition. i know you can make one easy enough, but there's something about the filters and the saturation of the originals that difficult to replicate with the current tools. perhaps we should start a new wishlist thread and see if we can convince cliff to give it a go. we'll really need to get everyone on board, because this has been on the wishlist as long as i can remember

Wow Leon, I think you’ve actually got a better sound than Trower himself, it’s tonally richer and clearer than the recorded Bridge of Sighs tone. The FAS vibe sounds better than a Uni-Vibe in my humble opinion. This may be the most amazing tonal feat the Axe has performed yet.
IMO the sound RT got on his early albums is iconic, emblematic of an era that is sadly gone but for the memories. His tone on Long Misty Days sounds like a thousand Marshalls on 11 all directed at a single helpless mic, overloaded and on the verge of destruction. There's not much in the way of high frequencies there, either, which is a bit contradictory for a Strat player. Sometimes Lo-Fi just works. I saw him live at an outdoor show in Arizona in '76 and his sound rolled off the stage like a gigantic warm blanket. So loud, four stacks all cabled up and not on standby. That's the way to do it.

As I remember off the top of my head regarding the Mu Tron and envelope filter/Auto Wah ala Jerry Garcia, Fire On The Mountain circa 1978ish (around those years) (*he also added in an octave on some shows with the EF which made the guitar sound like a steel drum..) anyway, back to the subject at hand; I remember having set up some rather sweet EF (and the steel drum thing too) on the AFII with the filter block, and one of the extra little tricks was putting an additional modifier on the Q value in the filter block, so the Q would vary a slight amount. I wish I could remember what it was, perhaps I’ll go back thru and figure it out again, but I figure I’d put this out there for those who want to experiment with that idea.

Snarky response from me in this thread, but this details what you're talking about: https://forum.fractalaudio.com/thre...-pat-martino-joyous-lake.110283/#post-1320638

When the wah block got updated a few years back I stopped using the filter block approach and went back to just the wah block. The inductor character modeled in the wah block is way more interesting and musical from a mu-tron perspective, for me.

I should do an Estimated Prophet clip next to Mayer's stuff with Dead & Co over the NYE run. It's very, very there.

This is what I'm going for. Saw him at the Fillmore Philly 2019, sounded freakin amazing live. We were talking about the effect and he goes with a big grin "mutron 3, nothing else sounds like it". Sounded much better on his 335 too!

I saw this show at the Paramount / Seattle, WA in October, 2019. Frampton's performance was spectacular! This was my first time seeing Frampton live and, sadly, the last. :(

Is the Dynaflange one of the new flangers, or is that something that can not be re-produced with just a flanger block?

You need to update Axe-Edit.
Where do I get the latest version of Axe Edit that works with this 12.0 beta? Like to get that squared away before I update the firmware. I am currently running Axe Edit version 1.04. Is that the most recent? Sorry for newb questions -- had my AFXIII for just a few weeks. Thanks.

@stereotactic Bridge of Sighs is iconic, I'm with @twenty4_7spy there but I'm humbled that you enjoyed it so much!

That's the beauty of the Axe - you can get as close as you like to just about anything and then you can build on it any way you like. The FAS vibe does that "chewy" univibe thing so incredibly well.
Both that and the classic vibe have that warm, chewy 'throb'. The FAS one sounds a tad cleaner and/or more refined, but both have 'it'....
