I must say, the global speaker impedance curve has changed everything for the better for me.
I tend to think of my tone this way: I find a cab that gives me the right frequency spectrum and “final” character I’d like, then I find an amp (plus OD if necessary) to provide the articulation and “fundamental” character I’d like, for lack of better descriptors. With the III, this is all very easy and quick. What’s really changed is that global speaker impedance setting, which, if you can find a stock one that melds well with your guitar and your IR, acts as the glue to make your tone responsive and alive. With the new ability to set it globally, it makes auditioning amps the most efficient it could possibly be. I cannot say how much I love it; it allows me to focus entirely on the articulation each amp provides, to get a better comparison, knowing the power amp of each model is being loaded, if that’s the right term, in the same way by the same speaker impedance curve. It’s so huge. It would also be awesome to set a custom curve for the global setting.
Whenever I read about problems with the feel of a FAS model, my immediate thought is that the user simply needs a new speaker impedance curve, either stock or custom. This setting so depends on your guitar and your playing to be right, and it takes some experimentation, but to me it’s the difference that makes your tone feel right while playing.
Anyway, I’m finding the process of tone building even more thrilling now. My thanks to the person who proposed the idea, those who advocated for it, and to Cliff and FAS for implementing it.
