The AX8 V7.01 Pubic Beta is now available for download. This firmware addresses a couple of issues discovered the V7.00 release. Please NOTE: This is BETA firmware, and as such may contain bugs and other unintended operational issues. Please read the release notes before installing, and as always, we recommend you back up your AX8 with Fractal-Bot before upgrading.

AX8 V7.01 Public Beta

RELEASE NOTES:

AX8 V7.01 fixes a couple of bugs from V7.00 and adds 2 new compressors to the COMPRESSOR block.

Additions:
  • Added “OPTICAL 1” and “OPTICAL 2” compressors to the COMPRESSOR block.
FIXES:
  • Fixed a bug that caused a drop in output gain on some amp models.
  • Fixed the loading of User Cabs on presets created with firmware older than V7.00.
  • Improved runtime performance by 0.5% - 1.0% depending on the preset. NOTE: Your mileage may vary depending on controller assignments and global settings.

Optical 1 uses a full-wave rectifier as a detector (peak detector). Optical 2 uses a true RMS detector. The LA-2A and many other compressors use rectifiers as detectors because it's easy and simple. Technically true-RMS detectors are "better" but they are difficult to implement in analog hardware. Whether or not true-RMS is better in actual real-world applications is debatable. There are those that claim that true-RMS detectors more closely replicate the natural compression behavior of the human auditory system. Peak detectors respond more rapidly to transients while RMS detectors have a smoother behavior. The only way to know which you like better is to try them.

might i suggest perhaps naming these, so it's easier to remember the difference? perhaps "opti peak" and "opti rms"?

Holy crap that was fast! Cliff you are a madman. Thanks for the update, I'll give it a play tonight!

Please no reset. I just got through the reset yesterday.

Any way to automate this prior to loading the firmware (run the update through the fractal bot or some other utility to reset amp blocks or have one firmware that automatically resets?

Pure curiosity, why not label it Optical Rect and Optical RMS?

I always get confused about what the difference is suppossed to be between Pedal Comp 1 and 2
