IRs York Audio Master Thread - Newest Cab Pack: KW 412 M25-SH

I bought the Friedman cab a few days ago and just want to give a shout-out to how much I'm enjoying it. I've been wanting to "freshen up" my AFX2 Mk II for a while beyond just the stock IRs--I've had it for almost 10 years!--and this was a perfect way to do it. I'm probably going to be grabbing...

    Real Wha-Wha?

As an alternative, you could split off a loop block from your signal chain after the wah block, and then record Output 2 into your DAW. This would give you the input stage plus the wah. In addition to the convenience for me of putting a real wah before the input, I've always felt more...

    Real Wha-Wha?

When I need to record a wah sound, I track a real one in front of my Mk II, since it's part of the performance and not something I want to try replicating when I reamp.

    Who's moving from a Axe-Fx II to FM3?

I'd consider it. I don't have anywhere near enough money for a III right now, and I mostly use my Mk II for reamping. If the FM3 has full quality amp and cab sim options from the III, that would be big (I also don't need more than one amp block at a time).

Good time or terrible time to buy Axe-Fx II?

It's never a bad time to buy a II, and the prices are undoubtedly much better, now. The III is certainly more "future-proof", but it's a personal decision on whether it's worth the extra money. Since I don't actually have any extra money right now, I'm spared this dilemma. :)

Axe-Fx II Firmware "Ares" 1.00 Public Beta

Loaded up the beta last night. Made an immediate impact on my SLO and Friedman patches. I wouldn't say that it's gainier on those models, actually. What it does is add more crunch in just the right way. I was able to turn down the gain overall and get that wonderful crunch that is really what...

Since I'm on a bit of a recording hiatus at the moment, I'll try out the beta and am looking forward to the final. Also want to join the chorus of people thanking Cliff for doing this for us--I'm sure he has other things he could be doing. Best customer service ever! He literally got every...

How many tried the III and decided to just keep using the II?

I bought my II just before my oldest child was born. Now, I have two kids and no discretionary money to buy expensive toys like the AFX3! However, if I thought I couldn't live without it, I'd sell the II plus some other gear and take the plunge. I'm getting great recorded tones out of the II...

808 Clean Boost Without Mid Hump?

Have you tried the 808 Mod? I feel like it gives the benefits of the 808 but without that horrible nasally mid-spike. I never use the regular 808 anymore unless I need that particular spike for a given sound.

    Dweezil Zappa Presets

I thought DZ needed two AFX2 units to get the proper dynaflange sound that FZ got. The Dynaflange itself was just a flanger effect that could be controlled by the input level rather than on a time basis. You can do that quite easily within the AFX flange effect by attaching a controller to one...

My new EP: all Axe-Fx II Mk. 2

Check out my new EP, 5 at 50. All of the guitar tones are AFX2. It's a series of improvisation-oriented workouts, inspired chiefly by Frank Zappa's live work. Prominently featured on every song is my SG going through my "Zappa" patch, which uses a dynamically controlled flange effect, ala...

Now that the III is out, future support for the II??

Undoubtedly, but I doubt it will be anything like the pace of prior development, where every XL+ update also had a corresponding Mk I/Mk II upgrade (even if not with all the features). I expect that there will only be a few more significant upgrades for the 2...and that's okay. It's not like it...

Now that the III is out, future support for the II??

There may also simply be an upper end of what Fractal can realistically do to keep upgrading the 2. Cliff was already highly generous in working overtime to develop parallel updates for the original/MK II and the XL/XL+. To expect him and the company to now have three separate development...

So far I'm not entirely sold on the Axe Fx 3....

I see this as a different situation than when the AFX2 replaced the original version. The FW development on the AFX2 has been far more significant and dramatic than was true with the original (and also took place over a much longer time), to the point where the AFX2 doesn't even sound like the...

    Heavy fusion improv

Here's a new track I wrote/recorded over the last couple days, while I was off from work. It really shows how you can get different results in the Axe-FX II from using a variety of guitars, which wasn't usually the case with previous modelers (including the Axe-FX Standard). Heavy rhythm...

Bass recording. Cab IR or straight DI?

"Wolf tones" are a sympathetic resonance happening in your instrument at certain notes that creates unwanted overtones, and there's nothing you can do about that with EQ or compression. If you mean a flubby, muddy sound or dynamic spikes from the bass, then that's all about EQ and compression...

Bass recording. Cab IR or straight DI?

I'd record it dry. Then you have a lot of options on how to treat it. A lot of great bass production techniques involve mixing a DI track and an amped track together. You can always reamp it onto another track and work on your compression in the box.

Okay, I uploaded a bunch of the tones I used on this album to Axechange. Search under the author "profusion". The patch names are extremely unimaginative! Let me know what you think of these. I created these to sit in the mix, so they might not give you goosebumps while auditioning them solo...

    2007-2017: 10 Years with the Axe-Fx

Nice story and great thread. I also go all the way back to the beginning with the Standard in 2007. I've been recording guitars DI since 1988, when I got a Rockman Ace, and I've probably owned one of everything over the years trying to get DI tones that I could live with. The AFX2 goes so...

New album, ton of Axe-FX tones

I just dropped my new album, Profit and Loss last night, after previewing a few tracks here, there and everywhere: Other than the acoustics and basses, all the guitar tones are Axe-FX II Mk. 2. Most of the reamps are from FW 6.03 or later. This album has a wide variety of guitar tones on it...

    SOLO 100 = AWESOMENESS

Brit 800 #34 at full roar

Check out my new song, which is a tribute to a late friend of mine. The rhythm guitars are the Brit 800 #34 with the venerable Basketweave TV Mix IR (the original one) and TS Mod drive in front. This amp sim absolutely slays, and the old TV Mix just always works even though it's not ultra-res...

I use a Focusrite Scarlett 6i6 interface, which includes SPDIF in/out. I use SPDIF with the Axe-FX into the Scarlett to do DI and reamping. Works beautifully. Went from Q3 to Q6.1 everything is bassey

I've never done a big FW jump like that, but I've never noticed the FWs gradually becoming bassier, either. What might be happening is that the high-end is "friendlier" now. It's tougher for me to dial in a harsh sound now, even compared to just a few FWs ago.

Fractal Audio and the future of... cabinet sims?

Don't forget that what Satch actually used in the studio versus the gear he's typically associated with might not be the same thing. Satch's book was an eye opener in terms of how much he experiments with different gear and approaches. The AFX2 and some decent IRs allow you to do that in a...

Why can't 'amp in the room' feel be modelled?

I agree, and I was probably a little harsh in my earlier statement about how no one "should" want to design an ITR patch. I understand why someone would want to. My perspective is probably a little weird, just because I've been DI-ing guitars since the '80s and have rarely played through amps in...

    An Acoustic IR Odyssey

I'd have to listen to them all again, but I only found a few of them to be genuinely bad. The others I felt could work with some re-EQing. An Acoustic IR Odyssey

I thought that some of those sounded pretty good, especially for what they are. Also, not all of the 3 Sigma acoustic IRs are so scooped; their Taylor model sounds bright and full, from the samples on their site. I'm definitely getting that one when I'm ready to reamp some piezo acoustic parts I...

Why can't 'amp in the room' feel be modelled?

Maybe because I'm getting more pragmatic in my old age, but In-The-Room is irrelevant and useless to all but someone standing a few feet from a guitar cab. It never makes it to a recording or to front of house. In fact, the characteristics that make ITR so enjoyable for guitarists are...

This has always been an issue for me too, only I didn't realize it until just recently--and I've been recording guitars DI with various devices since the late 1980s. Digitech 2120 dying...

It's that last part that's the problem. They haven't been produced for years and are all getting old. Unless you have the ability to test it fully in person, you have to assume you are buying a project. The 2101 is even worse. Good luck finding one of those now with a functioning screen or...

    Digitech 2120 dying...

I was a 2101 user for years, as well. However, I just used it DI for studio stuff, which is also what I do with the AFX2. The 2101/2112/2120 are great pieces of gear, but I think the AFX2 blows them away in every aspect. That shouldn't be surprising, given the rapid development of technology and...

Axe FX II direct into Korg D3200 DAW for recording?

I recorded seven albums with a D3200 and the original Axe-FX Standard. The Axe 2 would would sound great into the D3200. The amp sims in the D3200 aren't even in the same ballpark. UltraRes factory cabs?

While I do like the UltraRes cabs and plan on going that route from now on, I found the difference between the OH Chinese V30 that I tested ultra vs. low res wasn't so great as to make the lo-res cabs suddenly suck. It's a fairly subtle difference, IMHO. The new v.13 FW makes even patches with...

What boost for high gain do you use, and why?

Lately, I've been getting some juicy lead tones by putting a parametic EQ block in front of the amp and with the output of the EQ block raised by anywhere from 4 to 10 dB. From GSP2101 to Axe FX II = i miss some stuff and it's 20 Years ago...

It is pretty amazing. The Axe-FX Standard was the first box that managed to exceed the capabilities of the original 2101, and it took well over a decade for that to happen. From GSP2101 to Axe FX II = i miss some stuff and it's 20 Years ago...

Even though the 2101 was clearly a model for the layout of the Axe, I find routing generally easier to accomplish in the Axe, though advanced setups might be a different game. In terms of raw amp sounds, persistent tweaking gets you a lot further with the Axe than it did with the 2101, which...

If I had not had the chance to play both the new beta and the 12M, I might agree with you. But, for me, these cabs are worth $25 apiece. They really turn the AFX2 into a new and different beast. One thing I found with the Standard was that I often got the best results with a different amp sim than the one I was "supposed" to use for a given sound. Not all the amp sims are equal. For a really good Marshall sound, for example, skip all the Marshall amp sims and head straight for the...

    Brit Silver = thumbs up!

I'll be honest--the new Brit Silver sounded terrible in 9.0 Beta. Boxy and harsh. Axe-Fx II Firmware 9.00 and MFC-101 Firmware 2.15 Available

You'll probably just have to do some tweaking. On my go-to Brit Brown patch, I had to substantially lower the drive in my TS-808 block and tweak the amp EQ a little bit for more top end. Once I did that, it sounded way better than before. Also, I probably still need to raise the LPF threshold in...

I agree with most of what you said, but I especially wanted to highlight this. I've barely even had to crack the manual for the II yet--only when I was trying to figure out how to set the input level. A Standard or Ultra owner will have to spend a LOT of time figuring out how to get the best...

I'd like to amend this review to back off somewhat on my criticism of the presets. Fat Euro Red lead tone

It is a dark sim to be sure. Cranking the presence to about 2:00 and lowering the lows to about 10:00 is how I got this, along with not reducing the highs as much as I normally do on my legato lead patches. It also helps that other parts of the signal path add highs, such as the Duncan Custom...

This seems to be my experience with the IRs too after a few days of owning the II. Keep in mind that the LPF in the cabs doesn't absolutely cut off everything above the number listed, but simply uses that as the starting point for the roll-off--in other words, higher frequency stuff is still...

Thanks for the tips, clarky! Can't wait to try them out. I just got my AFX2 after being an early adopter of the Standard and recording a ton of stuff with it over the last five years. Maybe my ears are just accustomed to the Standard and its innate "smoothness," but I've been having trouble...

one thing i really dislike is...

I should add that the EMG in question that I've used is the 81X, which I believe has somewhat lower output than the original 81. My passives are Pearly Gates, and I keep them set fair low so they don't interfere with string vibration. That said, I never had any problem getting them into the "red...

one thing i really dislike is...

Sorry to do a thread resurrection like this, but I can't make the LED tickle the red at all with guitars that have medium-output pickups or less. EMG-81s barely tickle the red at full throttle on the I/O input setting. And this is with the instrument input set to "left only". Was this intended...

So I Made A Dumb Mistake ... How About You?

I just got my II, and I can barely get the LED into the red in proper left-only mode with an EMG-81 equipped guitar and the I/O level set as high as it will go on the instrument input. My guitars with Duncan Pearly Gates can't get there at all. As an old Standard user, this worried me at first...

The history of Axe Fx so far.

I'm another early adopter. I started with a Standard running v.3.something around mid-2007. My first album, "One Week in December" was recorded in Dec. 2007 entirely with the Standard running v.5.something (I think...can't recall exactly). You can listen to what it sounded like then at One Week...

Can we get a updated release date?

Yep. mine too. :) If I had to sell my Std to get a II, I wouldn't do it until I knew they were available immediately. As it is, I'm going to sell some other gear to make it happen, but I'm still in no hurry. I haven't even come close to tapping the potential of the Std yet.

Why so little talk about 11?

It could be that we're talking less about v.11 simply because so many of us are happy with it. I haven't had to do any tweaking of my patches--they all sounded better immediately. Essentially, they were more of what I was already looking for in those patches. Also, there aren't any new...

Will you buy an Axe FX II?

I only have a Standard, but the answer is most likely "yes." I have kind of an old-fashioned studio with a tabletop mixer/hard disk recorder, and having to constantly rewire stuff to use my Standard for both guitar/bass tones and mixdown & channel effects is kind of a pain. It'd be nice to...

The sale of Axe-FX units on E-bay is crazy!!!!

I'm strictly a studio guy and between album projects at the moment, so I could in theory sell my Standard and be Axe-less for a period while waiting for a AFX-II to arrive. But frankly, I'd rather sell off some other gear I have sitting around in order to get the II. The Standard will still...

    Standard/Ultra firmware 11

Big thumbs-up here too for v.11. One of my favorite patches is a Marsha HBE + drive block + tons of chorus & delay thingy for that sort of highly saturated Zappa lead tone. It tended to be indistinct on the lower notes, but not anymore. You can hear the detail and shape of the notes now even...

Playing Bass through Axe-FX, good results?

A bit late to the party on this one, but I've achieved a nice growling bass sound using the SVT sim with both the drive and the master volume cranked very high, into the 8x10 "refrigerator" cab sim w/ D112 mic. You actually don't need a drive block in front if you crank the SVT sim hard enough...
