    Atomic CLR initial impressions...

A little preamble. Years ago I had an Axe Fx II and ran it through a XiTone 12" Active Wedge and was very happy with my sound. I was a little irked that my clean sound was good and clean, but didn't have that little sparkle. Hard to explain. I sold all that stuff years ago and eventually...

How would you persuade me to go for an FM3?

I was so used to haven't any tone at my fingertips, it was fiscally impossible to achieve that going analog. I was always chasing my tone, whereas with the Fractal products, I knew how to get that tone from my head to my output.

How would you persuade me to go for an FM3?

You don't need to be persuaded. You need to decide on your own based on your needs. I had an Axe Fx II for almost a decade and loved it. I eventually realized it was too much for me after I stopped recording, sold it, and went full analog. Hated it. Bought an FM3, and for my needs, it's...

I wanna make an FRFR comparison video. Suggestions for methodology and other odds and ends?

As much as I agree with this, listening to a variety of speakers in a controlled setting can give you an over all idea of what the frequency response sounds like. Whether it's too bassy, too trebly, etc. That being said, it is something that, in most cases, can be dialed out if you are proficient.

I wanna make an FRFR comparison video. Suggestions for methodology and other odds and ends?

Find a good sized closet in your house and line it with buffering material. Use one dynamic mic near the cone and a condenser mic a few feet away. Same mics, at same distances. Make sure you run your mics into a virtually no latency USB inputs. Put each FRFR in the exact same position, and the...

Axe FX too overkill for bedroom only playing?

Please reread my comment. I did that. They couldn't tell. If you know how to use IRs, this is a non issue. And with a lot of plug ins, you can move the mics around and get just about sound you hear out of an "amp in the room".
  59. R

Axe FX too overkill for bedroom only playing?

I absolutely, 100% take issue with this comment. I've done tests with other musicians and they could not tell the difference. With an isolated track and in a mix. And with them in the room listening to both live. Sound is sound.

Axe FX too overkill for bedroom only playing?

Axe FX too overkill for bedroom only playing?

Dude...when you use the Katana as a traditional amp, the 0.5W attenuator is useful. Otherwise, as I've repeatedly said, studio monitors and FRFR solutions don't need anything like that. Never have. Never will. Fractal has a 15 day return policy. Plenty of time to try it. And also, the people...

Axe FX too overkill for bedroom only playing?

I may have misunderstood you, but I thought we were talking about you plugging in a Fractal through the Katana and using it as a speaker solution. Because that's what I'M talking about. I wouldn't call $300 studio monitors expensive. Isn't that what the Katana costs? We are talking about sound...

I listen to these videos through my studio monitors, and am listening for very specific things. I had a Katana MkII and didn't like it at all. I even A/B'd it with an HX Stomp through it and through my studio monitors and the sound was awful to me through the Katana. Again, powered monitors...

Axe FX too overkill for bedroom only playing?

I had a Katana and didn't like it at all. I've listened to John Cordy's YT video on the Catalyst and wasn't impressed with the sound it made. Especially as an FRFR for a modeler.
  66. R

Axe FX too overkill for bedroom only playing?

I never understood this. My "feel" is when I hear amazing tone. It's the complaint I hear that I just don't get. I've been using some form of modeling gear for the better part of 20 years. I couldn't care less about "amp in the room feel". I honestly don't even know what that means after having...
  67. R

Axe FX too overkill for bedroom only playing?

FRFR speakers or studio monitors don't need attenuators. Each of my studio monitors has two inputs. One XLR and one TRS. The XLR input comes from the FM3 and the TRS comes from my PC. This way I can use just the PC alone, just the FM3 for sound alone, or both at the same time.

Your studio monitors don't have to be anywhere near your computer. Mine are because I use them to mix and listen to music, but they don't have to be. I also like to control the FM3 vie the Edit program, so I have my PC there, as well. My studio monitors were $300 for the pair when I bought...
  71. R

Axe FX too overkill for bedroom only playing?

Not sure where you are getting this information. If you buy powered Studio monitors, you don't need a computer at all. My FM3 is plugged directly into my studio monitors via XLRs.
  72. R

Axe FX too overkill for bedroom only playing?

If you can afford it, get what you want. If you are on somewhat of a budget, get an FM3. I had an Axe Fx II for almost a decade, had to sell it, and recently got an FM3. Absolutely love it. It does everything I need, and didn't cost $2500.
