USB Firmware V 1.14 Release

This is the official release for public consumption. The public beta was for those willing and able to test it and report any issues before it was released to the public. It happens to be the same because the beta went so well 😀
Is there any issues flashing to this one after having the beta installed? I know they are the same but…

just updated and the input buffer level is jumping around all over the place, even with the usb cable disconnected. is this normal?

Just to add to what Cliff said, this behavior is normal. What you're seeing is the input buffer filling up when usb is idle since the host is not emptying the buffer by reading samples. Once the host begins reading samples, the input (and output) usb buffers get reset to a known good state.

Just to add to what Amandio said, this behavior is the same as it's always been. If you're seeing a difference, you must have had your buffer size set to a high value in the past (It was difficult to turn it down, so that wouldn't be surprising).

Turns out that the behavior is back but definitely not nearly as bad as before. After some time, the audio output from the Mac just stops until I reboot the Axe. I'll be playing music over spotify, routed through axe into headphones and then it just stops.
Will keep testing.
My experience with USB audio playback under 1.14 has been problem free, but I've never had a problem like yours even with the old USB fw.

I'm using a MacBook Pro (14-inch, 2021, M1 Max) with the Axe-Fx III connected through the USB port on a OWC thunderbolt docking hub. I've tested continuous audio playback for 8+ hours and not had any audio dropouts or other problems. I've used it day after day for about a week without rebooting. I've played system audio, Logic, Plex, and other apps with no trouble all this time.

Let's think about what other factors on your system could be causing this. Feel free to email me via support@fractalaudio.com

I’ve had this happen, as well, on the new USB firmware and previous. Just happened about an hour ago. Axe connected via USB C directly into a 2020 MacBook Air. I run audio through the Axe regularly. Reboot fixes instantly.

I can’t say for sure but I could almost swear it happens between songs. Like it’s triggered by a gap in signal? The reason I say this is that it usually takes me a minute to notice that the source is still playing - just no more sound.

What else is in your environment? Are there any other USB or audio devices connected? Are there any system extensions in play?
The Axe is direct into 1 of 2 USB-C ports. The other has an Apple adaptor with power, HDMI for a second monitor and a USB trackball. No other audio devices.

The system itself - in looking at my extensions I don’t see any audio related ones, just some Dropbox, Office and Affinity photo stuff.

The only “weird” thing I use is Rogue Amoeba’s SoundSource which allows audio routing and individual app volume adjustment and input output selection.

When the audio drops, unplugging the USB will not fix. Only rebooting the Axe.

Just to offer another data point, on my music production mac, I run system audio through Soundsource into the Axe-FX without any trouble.

I've had this happen with both a Caldigit TS3 and TS4 dock. I've tried a few different USB cables to be sure but I know I have a good USB cable now since I can use that one to connect directly to the Macbook Pro and it works via the USB->USB-C adapter.

Funny that @lair also mentioned it stops working when he pauses music - I think it's the same for me. For example, I'll be listening to music step away for a bit, then come back and hit play again but no audio until I do a reboot on the Axe. I do think I've had it happen where it stops working moving between songs but do not remember a time that it has stopped mid-song.

Connected to my TS4, I have:
  • Extreme Pro SSD
  • Nexigo HD Webcam
  • USB eLicenser (for Cubase)
  • Apple watch charger cable
  • Magsafe charger cable
  • Dell U3219Q monitor via USB-C on TS4
  • UA Apollo Twin Quad (normally powered down since I use the Axe)

I wonder if there are any logs I could pull from MacOS when it happens next. It is strange that MacOS still detects the USB device fine and AxeEdit continues to work. Even if I switch to a different audio device and then back to the Axe, it doesn't work. I've tried all sorts of things on the mac (like restarting CoreAudio) but a reboot of the Axe is the only solution. It does seem like the new firmware lasts longer before it stops but I've had it stop 3x today already.
