I think it is a quite feasible depiction of what could happen if people could actually have superpowers in our current society, and how that would be managed by the political powers and by the media. Just take the US Second Amendment and replace the right of the people to keep and bear arms with the right of the people to have the ability to blow brains with their mind or with their laser eyes. The same gore and political games we currently see with the personal fire arms, the global weapons trade and the war business, but with even more nasty carnage and abuse of power. Plus all the elements of racism, white supremacy, nationalism, fake news, disinformation, conspiracy theories, warmongering, misogyny, cults, hedonism, etc
