quantum, now cab backups = message timeout

I can't reproduce it here. Tried WinXP, Win7 and OS-X. I'm going to assign this to Ryan on Monday.

Cliff - I have no idea if this helps, but this is what I found

I took a trace of the MIDI and found the following:
the starts the dump with this:
F0 00 01 74 03 35 7E 05 48 F7

then the Bot starts asking for the banks:
Bank A: F0 00 01 74 03 1C 00 1A F7
Bank B: F0 00 01 74 03 1C 01 1B F7
Bank C: F0 00 01 74 03 1C 02 18 F7

this appears to go without issue.

Then the Bot asks for the System file
System: F0 00 01 74 03 44 00 42 F7
this is followed by a timeout error message.
I have no idea if this means that my System dump is intact or corrupted.

Bakerman's System dump command is this: F0 00 01 74 03 1C 03 19 F7
not the same as mine - but I don't know if this is because he has a different AXE-II to me
my Axe is a MkI / Bot Device = Axe-FX II

when I dump the cabs, only the first completes and then there is a timeout
when I dump the cabs individually I see the file arrive in the assigned folder [in the Mac] but it's followed by a timeout error message

when I set the Bot to backup Banks A thru C, System and User Cabs
Banks A thru C look good, after System I see two error messages
1 - Cab Bank E timeout
2 - timeout

I'll take back what I said earlier about 2.5.0 working sometimes; it has failed every time I've tried it tonight.

I captured dialogs from MIDI Monitor from both 2.0.8 and 2.5.0. Both show Fractal-Bot connecting to my Axe-FX II (Mk 1) and requesting a dump of just user cab 1. They are not the same. in particular, 2.5.0 sends an extra sysex message at the end, gets a reply back, then gets a timeout a few seconds later. I've pasted both in below, without the bulk data of the user cab dump:

2.0.8 dialog (works):

Thank you Cliff! Definitely think there's a bug here, and a sneaky one. Gut feeling tells me the new Bot is asking the Mk 1 for something it doesn't know how to do after a user cab dump. Hope the info I've posted helps.

Is there an MFC hooked up to the AxeFX II Mk 1 via Ethernet, when you are running into the Timeout errors ?

D'oh!!

Actually, yes, that's a darn good point...

I think I remember reading "DO NOT DUMP ANYTHING WITH YOUR MFC-101 PLUGGED IN EVAR..!" recently. And I think I was doing exactly that. Bad squid... I'll check tomorrow to see if it makes a difference.

Tried unplugging the MFC-101 and cycling the power, and... No joy. Still get the timeout. So much for the simple thing.

I have the same problem. Went up to quantum and then back to 20b snd i get the same error message when trying to backup my user cabs

I'm getting the same timeout messages when doing backups, but also I'm unable to save preset edits that are made within Axe Edit. With the exception of the latest Axe Edit and Quantum, my Windows 7-based system has remained the same for over a year. Never had any communication issues before.

Its a nightmare. My AXE FX 2 XL+ unit is running on Windows 10 pro, with all latest drivers and axe edit and fractal bot, everything on latest drivers etc etc, and no luck. My Axe FX unit is actually a dead unit until i can fix this - un-usable. Here is a post in fractal bot forum i placed:

I backed up everything on my Axe FX 2 XL+ and deleted everything off my Axe FX 2 unit after that. I Was going to create all my own presets from scratch, etc, etc, anyhow, long story short, i decided not too, (don't ask me why, lol), and then decided to simply reinstall everything from my backup which should be very very straight forward. But low and behold, i got all the presets back on fine, yet only a few Cab Banks are re-installing via Fractal Bot, only about 3 cab banks. Thus, i cant even use my presets at all now because the other cab files are not there, don't exist after transfer, thats even after a successful file transfer back to the Axe FX 2 unit.

Fractal Bot sends the cab packs over fine, but when i open axe edit etc, there is nothing but black spaces still where the cabs should be. No cabs, empty slots?? I cycle axe edit, and the Axe Fx unit, off and on, etc

please help, i.e. the Axe FX is un-usable until the cabs are re-installed because the presets cant see the cabs to use that they are linked too and a gig is coming up.

thanks in advance to anyone who can urgently help me with this

I'm not sure what you mean by "cab banks," but you can open your backups in Axe-Manage Cabs and populate your cab slots from there.

no im backing up from the backup, and have to use that because tons of my presets are linked to exact cab slots, exact cab numbers and locations, thus i have to install backups to same slots, thus i have to use fractal-bot to do that. If i used cab manage to put my purchased cab packs back on, they will be loaded to random locations, as a big block, yet i need to have certain cabs into exact slots for presets to see those exact cabs. I have a lot of presets, it would take weeks to try and place the right cabs one at a time into the correct locations, lol. There is a lot of people with these issues it seems. hope its sorted soon, no one has an answer to this, even fractal are only saying they cannot replicate the issue so haven't got any info from them to sort this. my unit is dead for gigs until i get this sorted

Once you've loaded the presets, check to see which cab slot they're pointing to. Make a list of which cab slot goes to which preset. Then start Axe-Manage Cabs, and load your backed-up cabs into the browser window. Drag and drop the appropriate cabs into the appropriate slots, then SAVE.

It works the same way if you've backed up with preset/cab bundles.

If you have 100 presets, it'll take you an hour or two.

but the cab files are in blocks because i used fractal bot to backup then. They back up as one file. How can i drag one single file that contains all the cabs in that one block. Remember, the cabs are created into a single file per block when backing up via fractal bot. If i had all the cabs in a folder, i could select them and do what you stated, but they are in a single file that was created with backup.

unless im missing something?

Try it and see. ;)

Remember to open that big file in the Browser window of Axe-Manage Cabs.

Resurrecting this old thread because I am seeing the same symptom for the first time. I don't see any resolution here but perhaps I need to search the forums more. I recently upgraded my Axe FX II Mk 2 to Quantum 5.0, I did a full backup no problems before upgrading (I am using Fractal Bot 2.8.0). I edited several presets and played for several hours no problems. Today trying to do a backup before more edits I get "message timeout" at what looks like it should be the start of cab backups (many attempts). I was on other Quantum versions before this BTW...
