Noise gate placement

I said it before - if you have a noise issue with the Axe, your gain staging is messed up.

or are you trying to achieve a gated effect?
for that you can always you a vol block and tie it to the envelope (and adjust that).

My problem is that I don't have enough sustain for solos because of the noise gate.
Assuming you've got the Threshold optimized, you can try decreasing Ratio or lengthening Release.

+1 on DP's comments concerning external interference.

BTW if you place the noise gate after the amp block it would be just as bad plus you would have to turn the noise gate threshold up (the amp amplifies noise coming in). That is unless you sidechain the noisegate to input 1. But still that would do nothing for your issue.

It is important to note. Unlike a real amp the axefx amp block does not generate ANY noise of its own. It only amplifies what it receives.

So like others have said it is best to tackle it at its source.
Rex and Don's comments are spot on.
