How do I control the phaser sweep manually?

I'm trying to manually control the sweep of the phaser. The closest I can come is when I attach the Rate parameter to my expression pedal at Extrn1. This lets me manually control the frequency of the sweep, but not the sweep itself. If I use Axe-Edit to attach the pedal, the display in the editor jumps to "LFO1 SYNC." The display on the Axe itself does not—it continues to display the sweep frequency I had set before attaching the pedal, although the virtual "knob" sweeps back and forth as I rock the pedal.

I've found a couple of threads that address this, but none that solves my problem. Is this a design limitation, a bug or a self-inflicted brain fart?

Turn depth down to 0 (rate becomes irrelevant), attach the modifier to frequency start. your pedal sweep becomes the rate.

Man I love using wahs, phasers and flangers this way. Some of the coolest tones are in their in the in between.
