Have you found “your” amp in the FM3?

CAE clean with distortion pedals is pretty cool,

metal zone (sounds crazy good) stock into stock btw

Before I got the FM3 I had no idea how many amps I had lost. Currently I am playing around with the Supremo Trem and I am pretty sure it will go into a permanent preset. I have been making a basic preset for each amp I like with the all the cabs I like for each amp. That way I have basic templates that act as a short list to start from when I am building a tone. This forum has been an amazing resource to guide my discovery.

Tone King Imperial Mk II, which is a cross between a Deluxe Verb Vibrato on the rhythm channel
What do you do to get the rhythm channel tone? Do you start with the Deluxe Reverb model or something else? I think the Imperial is cathode bias, no negative feedback so I bet the FAS Class A amp model is pretty close (blackface preamp w/ cathode-biased 6L6 power amp).

I started with the Blackface Vibrato for clean/rhythm.

The Lead channel might have no feedback but the rhythm sounds very much like a pentode amp with some feedback. It’s pretty crisp and tight.

I recently switched to using the Blackface for the lead channel and it’s very close to what I hear using the amp too. I’ll experiment further.

The first was a Mesa Lonestar Special, which was relatively easy starting from the Texas Star Clean and Texas Star Lead models. Because that's the 100-watt 6L6 2x12 model, it needed power tube changes to EL84 and some other tweaks which I don't remember because it's been a couple of years. I recently added a Class A version of the lead scene because the low-power switch changes the amp to Class A operation, which is done by setting Grid Bias to 1.

The one I've worked on more is a version of a Tone King Imperial Mk II, which is a cross between a Deluxe Verb Vibrato on the rhythm channel and a Dweezil's Bassguy on the lead channel. I changed the power-amp settings of the Bassguy to the same settings as the Deluxe, and adjusted the Speaker Impedance Curves to match the 1x12 Brit G12M, which seems close to what comes with the amp; I think the real amp uses a custom Greenback. I doubt I'm finished adjusting it, but it sounds pretty close. The tube amp is my grab-and-go when I take an amp, so having it in the modeler is nice.

To make them I read many reviews to get the "it sounds like" comments and bounce those off my thoughts, looked at the schematics to get an idea of what was going on when changing channels, and adjusted parameters based on Cliff's and Yek's notes.

Also, I've always tipped my amps back so they fire at my head, so I'm used to hearing what the microphone would hear, or the modeler generates through my FRFR speakers. When I have the modelers at a jam I have some friends who are good players and who know my tube amps, and I'll put them on my presets and then sit back and listen, then ask their opinions afterward and tweak accordingly.
The Tone King is an amp that I would love to see modeled fully in Fractal Land. If you do get around to posting a preset, I’d love to check it out. What IR are you using? The York Deluxe pack sounds great with those style amps.

The Texas Star is one I need to spend more time with. I dig Mesa amps, but this one has a whole different vibe. I think I need to really dial it in at volume to appreciate it. I remember it being pretty compressed and mid forward for my taste.

Thanks for the explanation!

I keep coming back to the high power twin turned way up. I also really like the Tucana.

It might be because I have my stuff set up to work more like a pedalboard than using scenes to pick sounds, but pretty much whenever I have access to an amp other than the twin, I don't end up using the other one(s) very often.....I just forget that they're there. But when I do switch to another amp, I always remember to go back to the Twin.

If they weren't so damn loud IRL, I probably would have bought one of the JB reissues by now. But, I just don't get to (nor would I often choose to) play with a 105dB clean sound when what I really like is the amp cooking. I have played a small-builder Tweed Bassman clone (they're almost the same circuit; half the power tubes, weaker transformers, and different speakers, IIRC) with a Post-PI MV and it was at about 80-90% of what I get out of the Fractal. So, apparently that's just what I like.

What IRs and speaker curve are you guys using with the Tucana? I’ve tried it several times and so far I haven’t nailed it. Everyone seems likes this thing. Any tips? It’s the nasally sounding mids that bug me from what I recall.

How loud are you when auditioning and adjusting the cabs? It might be Fletcher-Munson getting in the way.

I use the Classic Lead 80s ones with most things, at least as a first try....I think it's a 2x12 for the impedance curve, and there are a few factory IRs of them. Apparently, those are just my favorite speakers. Tucana was no different.

Greenbacks and EVM-12Ls give them a run for their money with some amps. And IRL I've also really liked a handful of cabs that usually turn out to be Vintage 30s, but I haven't had much luck with them in the Fractal (either impedance curve or IRs). No idea why.
