Fender FR-12 compared to PXM-12. My experience so far.

I got a pair of FR-10s in the past week for use at home. I'll have to say this is the most I have felt 'connected' while playing with a FRFR system. I realize the FR-10/12 may not be 100% flat or whatever, but that doesn't matter to me - the AITR type response is improved. It is what I had hoped to experience a few years ago when using a PowerCab, but I wasn't that happy with it and eventually sold it to go back to traditional guitar cabs.
more 'connected' is a great way to put it. That's exactly why I bonded to them as well. Short of using a PA and Cab this is first FRFR like setup where I felt that. I also don't care that its not even truly flat...i like what it adds not much different than me choosing IR's and tweaking to my ears.

I've read all the posts of this threads about the Fender FR-12, but I haven't figured out how to check if the FR-12 I'll get will have the updated board. Besides using my ears, what should I check on the board? Order from Thomann EU. Thanks for your help!

Sweetwater is getting some in around the second week of March I can only assume they are the newest version does anybody have any info on this?

Some of the old stock, like mine, were noticeably quieter than others. So, even if it’s old stock, you could still be okay.

Heads up that Fender has the FR-12 in stock right now! I canceled my other orders with Sweetwater and Zzounds. (Paging @DoctorAK)
Mine got here on Thursday from Fender, FYI. I hear no hiss when silent at all.

This thing is awesome. As someone used to playing either through my monitors (at home) or a Headrush 112 (when at band practice) this thing is a revelation. So much more amp-in-the-room. With my HR, when I played my normal "stereo" preset through it, it got muddy, especially with stereo wet FX. With the Fender, even my stereo wet FX sound amazing when mono.

Next up gonna try W-D-W with my monitors as the wet and the FR-12 as the dry.

I just grabbed an FR-12 from GC (used) to try out. I hate to say it but initially I am very disappointed. It's incredibly boxy sounding no matter how I dial it. Lacks clarity. The bass needs to be rolled down to 2 or 3 to even be useable. Way too much low end. My presets are all dialed in based on Austin Buddy's amp settings, so I can't blame those. Not sure if these open up once you add 2 of them? That was the case when I was running 2x QSC K12's, but even just one sounded really good.

Tone-wise this video captures my complaints. Sounds like having a blanket over the speaker no matter how you set it.

Hmmm. Although I could understand someone saying there's too much bass, the description of it sounding boxy and lacking clarity seems quite at odds with my experience. I assume you started with the bass, middle, and treble knobs are set flat (noon)? And cut is all the way down (minimum)? How loud are you playing it?

It would be a good idea to compare it to a new one if possible. Or at least another one. I'm always suspicious of GC used.

I'm wondering if there's something worg with yours - I was just over at Austin Buddy's place and we tried my FR12 alongside his CLR and MF 10s and it could hang.

Is the horn blown? GC used = who the heck knows what the thing went through. :)

Agree there are a LOT OF MUFFLED and BAD sounds in that video .. . like awful sounds. What do you normally use for amps/speakers;etc, that you like? There are sooo many variables in dialing in someone's sounds (to me) with digital that I've never been able to use any preset with any digital device I've owned from Fratal , Line6, Boss, Hotone, etc. . I write my own and MAKE them work with whatever I'm using for speakers. We're all different for our needs/wants. Also completely depends on how loud someone plays.. Another guy on this forum just mentioned playing his at 70db. I talk louder than that!

Yes, but with the tone controls I got a satisfying sound at 70db. Definitely better loud but later at night I try not to blast the hood. It was more like 70-75db but still pretty quiet.

All I mean by that, is I've played guitar for 49 years now and I don't think I've ever used a speaker cabinet and played that low a volume. I use headphones when I use digital gear at night, but whether be it at my apartment when I was young, or since I was able to live in houses, I don't play that low thru speakers. All I'm saying is when guys compare gear 'online in forums' there are a HUGE amount of variables. If you love it at 70db, then 'normally' you'd love it way more at 95 db, BUT not every speaker and cab works that way , even though you think it would. Some would add muffleness and compression as you turn them louder, and some just open up and sound less compressed and fuller, nicer , richer! I could go on and on, but I just deleted my babble. . Too many variables (in my experience) unless sitting in the same room with something and dialing it in for our needs. Rock on!
