Cliff.....what were the working names before Axe Fx name was chosen?

I like the name. It’s descriptive enough that you kind of immediately get what it is, and it has a bounce to it when you say it.

Also it’s such a recognizable name in the community at this point that I doubt people really think about the name much anymore. At this point it’s simply a procession of syllables that has become synonymous with the best amp modeling and multi-effects units on the market.

I just wish we had an agreed upon acronym.
FAS, Axe, AFX, AE3, MkIII... can we just settle on something so we don't have to type out Fractal Audio Systems Axe-Fx III Mega Turbo Face Punch Edition?
This. When I fist saw" FX3" in a post, I thought, "What the hell is that?" And that was after being active on the forum for more than a decade.

Sometimes I use the actual full name of the product: Axe-Fx III. But Fractal's product names, catchy and memorable as they are, make for some awkward typing moments. To simplify my forum life, I shorten that to Axe or Axe III. That's sufficient to differentiate in from any other current Fractal product.

On a seriously note, I can imagine Axe Fx began as a multi effects (fx) processor for guitar (axe). Hence Axe-FX. Many multi effects had built in amp sims 20 years ago, but most of them sounded bad and the focus was on the effects due to limited amp modelling capabilities. Cliff did the amp modeling so well people started using it for more than just effects, but the name was kept. 🙂

Most names make sense, too. Just my guess:
Fm3 - Floor Modeller (3 footswitches)
Fm9 - Floor modeller (9 footswitches)
VP4 - Virtual Pedalboard (4 footswitches)

As for my Axe-FX III Mk2 Turbo:
Long name, but makes sense, too. AXE FX, third generation, second revision (Mk2), Turbo due to more powerful DSPs.
