5 Minute Tones - FM3

Great series!

I had to pack up my Fractal as I'm moving and that "trick" of turning off the saturation on the Atomica model really made me miss it. Looking forward to playing around with it when I'm settled.

Okay so I pulled my Fractal back out of storage (YES) and tried this out and this woke up the Atomica for me! I turned the depth down to 3, bass down to 4, treble up to 6, saturation off, and turned the gain up a bit. Sounds awesome!

IIRC the Atomica is essentially a modded JCM800, so turning the saturation off brings it more in line with that classic 2203 thing we all love. Stoked to hear you have the Fractal back :D

always appreciated your fractal knowledge dude. cant wait for my fm3 to come through. did you prefer the switch numbers and layout of the ax8? asking because i cant decide whether to get and fc6 or 12 with it. Im not really into the idea of 'pressing and holding' and going through menus, layouts and pages while in mid song. I might be answering my own question here, but really wanted to know whether you would have prefered more switches to come with the unit? I have to do a lot of pop 'sound just like the record' gigs so my presets are varied and complicated. Do you use the fc6 or 12 with your fm3?

I was getting way too close to pulling the trigger on the FM3, so the trip to storage saved me quite a bit of cash!

I have an FC-6 but I've been waiting for @Admin M@ to unleash the "OMG9" layouts on us all before I go to deep setting them up. We did a Ragdoll tour recently where I just used the FM3 and an expression pedal and I loved it. The FM3/FC12 combo would cover just about anything you'd ever want to do though.

I have a suggestion for 5 Minute Tones ... how about legendary artists/albums? Here are a few ideas:

  • Nuno Bettencourt/Pornograffiti
  • Van Halen/I
  • John Skyes/1987
  • Steve Vai/Alien Love Secrets (or Passion and Warfare)
  • Richie Sambora/Slippery or New Jersey
  • Angus (Malcolm) Young/Back in Black
  • Dan Huff/Last of the Runaways

I'd love to see LT attack any of these (especially Angus and Malcolm!!), but the all-time best Van Halen Preset is an AX3 patch called "Burgs' Brownies" available on the AxeChange. Go see Burgs' YouTube video of it - it's seriously PRICELESS, but it is more than the FM3 can handle - I've locked it up several times to try to lobotomize it. So sad because I've never heard better EVH tone and options. Killer Preset probably worth buying an AX3 to be able to play it...... Maybe LT would like to take a stab at converting it to FM3 for us? I think Burgs crashed his own FM3 trying to re-create it for FM3..... So much CPU - It's THAT good of a VH preset! Maybe one day?????
