Fractal Noise Reducer vs noiseless single-coils

Thanks guys! Anyone try the Kinman Converge 3 pickups? Considering how strong their reputation is on Strat stacks I'd expect these to be good, but if they were really good then I'd expect to be able to find more about them

Fractal Noise Reducer vs noiseless single-coils

Whoa, those Polish ones are a real surprise. But 12 A5 poles at the neck would really mess with the strings I think.. I was looking at EMG but I really want to be able to split to either coil. Outer coil for Strat neck, inner coils for a notch sound.

Fractal Noise Reducer vs noiseless single-coils

Where does Lace fit into things these days? Asking for my HH guitars where I'd often want to split the neck. I kinda wish there were options out there for a neck humbucker where one coil could be switched to noiseless stack. I know Ibanez did something like this, but wound super hot.

Fractal Noise Reducer vs noiseless single-coils

Have you tried the noise reducer instead of the noise gate? To my ears it's pretty transparent set as high as ~-40 dB threshold (which isn't always enough to tackle bad noise)

Fractal Noise Reducer vs noiseless single-coils

Legitimate option but I'm not in the market for a Suhr and unlikely to install either of those devices in a guitar (especially since I don't play my trem guitars). Overall I think it's a great option against noiseless pickups, but doesn't address the question here which is about solving the...

Fractal Noise Reducer vs noiseless single-coils

Curious what folks' thoughts are on using the Fractal Noise Reducer (not the gate) versus good single-coil-sized humbuckers, particularly for bright mid-gain tones. The north star I'm going to refer to here is Dylan Carlson's sound. If you listen to The Bees Made Honey in the Lion's Skull, it's...

Which single amp channel to do it all?

Sorry, what I meant was using an expression pedal as a controller (i.e. Roland EV-5), and linking that in the Fractal to multiple amp parameters simultaneously. That way, for example, you could adjust the amp gain and EQ knobs simultaneously through a defined range by moving just the expression...

POLL: the single amp channel for set-and-forget

Extending my tangent here... I've long been a thick-ish "57" or "59" neck guy, and even the Pattern Regular on my PRS Singlecut is basically a '59 profile on the thinner side of the spectrum. When I got my 1998 Navigator Explorer I quickly realized it wasn't so much a 50's Gibson replica (like...

POLL: the single amp channel for set-and-forget

Very clearly we like Marshalls around here! It's really no competition. With how many votes there are for the Plexi 6CA7 and the JCM 800 2203 I'm betting that if it had been an option the 1970 Plexi 100W would have stolen votes from both camps, since it's got both Plexi character but also...

POLL: the single amp channel for set-and-forget

Yea, my experience as well. I've got a couple of LP-style guitars with boutique PAF's etc that will stay traditional, a 50's style Fender Strat that will too, some guitars that I've miraculously left stock that I won't mess with. Yes. Yes it is. So much so that I keep wondering if it is stock or modified. And I also wish that we had the normal model for it because I'm betting it would shred like a bowie knife. I agree that the 50's wiring benefits are more subtle than I would like, but I'll take what additional brightness I can get. I recently got a PRS which is my first guitar with treble bleed caps. I definitely do find it helpful and think it should probably be standard for most guitars. I generally lean on the vintage side of things, so the vast majority of my guitars have "50's" Gibson wiring, which is a bit more...

    FM3 knobs footswitch bracket?

Thanks! This is definitely interesting. Will it work as a button? Seems like it won't take impact off the button mechanism of the knobs. I worry whether the knob buttons can handle the beating of foot usage (again, not for stuff like toggling a drive mid song, but some lighter usage)

    FM3 knobs footswitch bracket?

This is going to sound weird and confusing. DIY FM3 proper input clipping indicator

You find unity gain between the input block and output block with no blocks in between. Then you nudge the output block up by 0.1dB In this case, if I've done it right, unity gain must be just around +1.9 dB gain on the output block, and so moving the out block up to +2.0 shows clipping if the...

DIY FM3 proper input clipping indicator

Continuing on from my 18v EMG exploration, I think I've come up with an easy solution to the fact that the FM3 lacks the proper input clipping warning that the Axe-FX III has. By taking a second line from the In 1 to the Out 2, and setting the Out 2 level to -2.0 dB, I think I've rigged it up...

    EMG @ 18v red-lighting FM3 with 18dB pad

Moar update: For aesthetics I replaced the old-logo EMG 81 in the bridge with a new factory blem gold 81. Now I can blip my Out 2 clipping setup with Out 2 set at MINUS 2.0 dB, which to my mind means absolute clipping of the input. Also, I guess the new 81 is more powerful than the old 81...

    EMG @ 18v red-lighting FM3 with 18dB pad

Now that I'm thinking about it... if with the 18dB pad I clip Out 2 when Out 2 is set to 2.4 dB with the EMG 81 by itself, but clips when set to 1.8 dB when I use the Micro Amp too, then maybe I'm not clipping the EMG 81. Although that only leaves 0.6 dB of wiggle room.

    EMG @ 18v red-lighting FM3 with 18dB pad

My understanding is that the CR2032 is about half the mAh as a 9V, so if I was stacking 3 to hit 9 volts it would actually last a bit longer than a 9V battery, but I don't understand these things so good. Highest gain non-modded Plexi?

Looks like the 50w 1 is from 1972. So that's the general rule: the later the Plexi the higher the gain? Gradually Marshall tweaked values and components to keep up with the demand for more gain? Also, am I crazy or do Plexis often sound tighter and more percussive than 2203's/2204's?
