    Too Much Power ?

A lot of people will echo what I'm about to say, but it's also borne out from my own experience. Take it for what it's worth. Yes, if you dime that power amp it will blow the speakers in short order. But you need to understand that a 2x12 cabinet with 120w handling capacity can get painfully...

  8. SmokinHalfNote

Open back XiTone vs. closed wedge

Xitone FRFR cabs will follow the same "rules" for open vs closed back cabs. An open-back cab allows the sound to fill a stage a bit more (for good or for ill), which is why they're often preferred by folks who want an "amp in the room" kind of feel. The wedge will have a tighter focus and will...

    Blank Screen on AX8 Startup

Don't know. It's obviously not affecting everyone. Keep in mind this was a "phone diagnosis," so when FAS receives my AX8 I'm sure they'll diagnose it more fully. Just glad it's getting taken care of.
  10. SmokinHalfNote

    Blank Screen on AX8 Startup

Diagnosis via FAS: Likely a loose connector cable. AX8 is boxed up and will be sent back via UPS today. Their response time was incredible and Charlie (FAS tech support) was really understanding and helpful.

    Blank Screen on AX8 Startup

    Blank Screen on AX8 Startup

Hi all. I have an AX8 without much "mileage" on it (bought it in January), but this problem was there from the beginning. It's only become annoying because I'm gigging more with it. I get an occasional blank green screen upon startup. The screen is backlight, but no text. Nothing. Just a blank...

    OneSpot

Love Visual Sound/Truetone, and I've used the 1Spot a lot in the past. That said, I just wouldn't trust a switching power supply with such an expensive piece of gear. Too many anecdotal accounts of the 1Spot frying gear. I'd get the Fractal adapter just to be safe.
  15. SmokinHalfNote

Do many people use Carvin guitars with their Fractals?

Owned (and own) many Carvins - guitars and basses. I would add that they sound wonderful through a variety of rigs because they're good instruments. So sure, it'll sound nice through an Axe Fx (and a Gorilla practice amp, and a Marshall stack . . .). Great guitars. Exceptional playability...

    Quality of PRS vs Suhr

Have a 2003 PRS McCarty (10 top - McCarty burst) that is as good a guitar as I've ever played, and it's one that I will never part with. That being said, I haven't been as impressed with the recent stuff. It seems too, I don't know, "showy" for lack of a better word. Currently on a Suhr Classic...

    Zoom Q8

As someone who does a good deal of A/V work, I avoid phantom power when possible. This is me just being afraid. You recognize that it's possible to damage the Axe Fx. Yikes! Not worth it to me. But again, I'm a phantom power wimp. I'd use the battery. Not worth the risk IMO.

How did you learn to improv?

I use a program called "Transcribe," (nice name, right?) - it just makes the workflow easy. But I also use a program called (wait for it - funniest name ever) called "The Amazing Slow Downer" for both Mac and iOS. But as much as possible, I try to figure stuff out at original speed. But even...

How did you learn to improv?

There's one thing that most of (I think nearly all) the "greats" have in common, regardless of genre. Transcribing, transcribing, and more transcribing. And of course, knowing the fretboard inside and out. Not necessarily writing it out (though that is helpful if you know standard notation)...

    Matrix FR12 active Cab

Not really. They never had pricing or actual active FR212 models in the pipeline. I don't think it was bait and switch as much as it was they saw the demand for an active FR212 to be pretty low (because it would have been a beast). But yeah, their website definitely needs a facelift and some...

    Sans Amp

You might be able to get some decent cleanish sounds this way (guys have run straight into a board for clean sounds for years), but I think the general consensus is that for any kind of crunch or overdrive sound you'll get a harsh sound without some type of amp & cab emulation. Not sure if this...

    Line 6 Stagesource

I gig in a band that plays a few times a week, and we recently switched to a complete Line 6 PA system - nothing but good things to say. Although I prefer to use my own monitoring system, there are many times I've gone either Axe-Fx or Kemper straight into the board and used our monitors...
  34. SmokinHalfNote

Can I use the FX 8 into the front of a clean amp...

Bingo. What's bad is having distortion after delay, whether it's amp-based distortion or pedal-based distortion. Distorting a delayed sound = (usually) bad; delaying a distorted sound = (usually) desirable. From what it seems, running an FX8 in the front of a clean amp should be no different...

Never said you couldn't get them cheaper - that's a good price. Still, standard dealer street pricing is $1349. I know for a fact that Pro Audio Star (while an authorized TC Dealer) often violates MAP and has gotten in trouble with companies in the past for doing so. But hey, if the FX-8 is...
  40. SmokinHalfNote

How much will it cost? Hmmm.....

So is this also like a TC electronic G System

In the sense that you can put different *real* stompboxes at various points in the signal chain, I think it is. You can use your favorite pedals and/or amp distortion with the FX8 effects. One notable difference between this and G System is that I don't think Fractal will completely abandon...

Mark is awesome, and his videos are killer. He should be on FAS payroll since he's probably responsible for a good number of sales. Good for him and Fractal! Still, the last time I was this disappointed I got socks for Christmas instead of an Atari. So much for new hardware. :( But congrats Mark!

What is the 'Cool News Coming Tomorrow'? (Today)

"Cool" news means new hardware. It won't be an Axe III because Cliff & Co. have already stated there's plenty of life left in the Axe II architecture (and they just came out with the XL). My bet is that the FX8 will be released, perhaps along with the previously revealed expression pedals...

Our band switched to the whole Line 6 PA enchilada, and I have to say - I'm impressed. I didn't have a say in the matter, though I was always intrigued by the L6 link. It makes setting up a breeze. The mixer is frickin' incredible, and the sound is incredibly sharp. We've gotten tons of...

Substitute "tubes" for "tube amps," and you might have a workable argument, unfortunately. I love where we are tech wise. Here it is - LINE 6 Amplifi

Nope. So, if you define reinventing the guitar amp by including Bluetooth or turning an amplifier into a home A/V accessory, I give. And for what it is, it looks interesting. Never thought I'd recommend Peavey solid state but I think the Vypyr series blows the Line 6 stuff away. Peavey also released the "Vypyr Pro" today that looks pretty cool. So, far the "reinvention" of the guitar amp doesn't seem to be going very well.

I didn't even make 14 inputs a factor in my recommendation, mostly because there is no such interface in the price range he mentions. Tricks to breaking through a wall in your playing...

One more thing that is aimed at me as much as it is anyone . . . Take the time you would spend on a message board and use it to practice the basics (chord voicings, arpeggios, scales, modes) in every key until you know them cold. And yes, I'm aware of this post's irony. :)

Help choosing - USB/Firewire Interface about 200 used

Firewire is dead tech. Don't make it a factor in your decision. Even Apple (one of its creators) has eliminated it in all current Macs. While your MacBook Pro does have a Firewire port, I personally recommend getting an interface that has a longer lifespan. I'd go for the Focusrite Scarlett...
