Reduce fizz on High Gain amps

That fizz is what helps a lot of high gain amps cut through and give clarity in a mix. Many people’s favorite “smooth” tones are much more hairy than they realize. Don’t be surprised if you lose clarity and brilliance if you start trying to take out a bunch of it.

Tips for dialing in a JCM800 tone like this?

DOD 250 will help for that yngwie style fluidness as well… There’s always a ton to unpack for tones like this. People ask a simple question and want a simple answer, but it’s almost always never that simple. I’ll ask the first question though…can you PLAY like him? Because a lot of that is...

Never Mic'd a cab - what are typical mic placements?

It’s real simple: get a flashlight. Put it right up against the grill. place a 57 dead center on the speaker, right against the grill. Listen to all 4 speakers in this position ( if it’s a 4x12 obviously) record a couple clips of each speaker micd dead center. Pick your favorite speaker. Now...

Well, a real amp into a load box is not the same as playing a real amp into a cab that’s mic’d up, but I digress… But I agree with you, you definitely DONT need to deep dive into parameters to get a great sound out of the Marshall models. Great post, totally agreed. The 800 to be fair is kind of its own thing in this world, and kind of an anomaly. It very obviously has a predominantly preamp driven overdrive ( hence the gain knob on them), but many people still DO find them pleasing with the volume way way up. And in some...

Well if you want to be a smartass, it sure is on some amps. On a recto it’s already clipping at that volume. On a 5150 it’s getting close to full on clipping. When do you start getting override on a small deluxe combo? Obviously it depends on the pickups, but it ain’t much higher than 9-10...

Sure, but you should be able to tell when it’s starting to clip. You know when it gets super midrangey and almost bloated sounding and you lose a ton of high end and bass? That’s clipping. Either way the headroom parameter is one of, if not the best features to me implemented in the axe, for...

“ This occurs because the virtual power amp is distorting, and quite heavily. Glad you dug it! No other EQ other than the wow thing placed on the stereo buss. It does what you often do in a track on metal guitars especially: cuts the shitty boxy low midrange, and a boost in the highs and high mids, but does it in a way EQ by itself does not at all. Very cool, and a no...

Is the WOW Thing similar to the Enhancer Block?

I’m not really sure how to describe it. Wow pushes the high midrange out of your speakers and wider for sure. It’s not just “stereo widening”, and also adds massive low end in a really cool way. The plugin also has different parameters for the high frequency boost, as well as where the low end...

The EURO Blue AMP sometimes has unpleasant distorted tones.

I’ll 2nd this . Speaker impedence selection, and master volume placement are the single biggest factors in dialing in my tones, personally. With high gain amps especially. That, and dropping the bias a bit for tighter and bigger low end , more highs, and less honky midrange.
