Axe 2 plus Free REcording Software --anyone try or have hints?

Hi all, Im having trouble figuring out how to record some basic stuff with the axe 2. My current choices are cubase le5 or audacity or Kristal. I am lost. on all I find the axe 2 asio, can set it up as midi, even change the axe 2 presets ! cant get any to record. This drives me nuts. I assume I am to set up a track using axe 2 asio, and use a "audio track" not a midi or instrument track. Im using windows vista 64bit. Kristal at least shows levels when I play guitar, but I cant play back after recording. Cubase is what I really want to use, but I dont see any levels when creating tracks. Hellllllllllllllllp, even basics of setting up a recording, or even with some other free ware?

LOL @ being willing to spend $2.5K on the world's bleeding edge guitar processor hardware and $0 on recording software for it.

Look at reaper it has an unlimited free trial and the license is stupid cheap for home use. It's really high quality, easy to setup, and has a very active user forum if you need help, too.

Kristal is pretty old, I don't think it's been updated since 2005. It's pre-Vista so that could be a problem. It was pretty cool for running VST's but not the best for recording. I think Kristal 2 was never released and became Presonus Studio One.

I second the vote for Reaper. Free un-cripled download and if you choose to buy it it's only $40 for the current version 3.76 and all upgrades to version 4.99 are included. It's pretty easy to use, low CPU usage, stable and has a helpful user community.

Thanks will check it out: well dont laugh too hard, I have a 1200 dollar kor 16 track that has been gathering dust, hard to use; and spent 100s of dollars on cakewalk guitar tracks, that have become obsolete with my vista; as well as an m audio fast track and a zoom g2nu. so after actually over a thousand dollars of recording stuff, I am still baffled by these things, cant scrub , cant edit, can barely make a track to begin with. If you are going to laugh, laugh at the dude drinking a 3 gallon diet coke with his 5 big macs and 3 super size fries :)

THANKS FOR THE SUGGESTION DUDES, I MAINLY WISH TO START POSTING SOME PRESET SOUNDS FOR ALL THE GAIN HEADS OUT THERE, AND MAYBE JAM A FEW TRACKS FOR MYSELF!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! IM ABOUT TO REAP!

Couple of observations..
  1. did you arm the tracks before recording.
  2. did you set up different midi/audio tracks - midi does not contain/pass audio of any kind.
+1000 on Reaper. It's what I use. Works great with the AxeII

Does Reaper do midi patch changes?? If so does it change seamlessly like Logic does on my iMac.
Does it only work on a PC ?

any way to hear it through my desktop speakers without latency delay? or do I have to only monitor through headphones or speakers attached to axe fx? also cant figure out how to get drum kit from hell to be seen? do I have to put it in a specific folder? other programs seem to find it.

yes.
create a new MIDI item on a track (Insert > New MIDI item)
Edit the new MIDI item (I usually just double-click)
In the bottom left, it probably says Velocity. Switch that to Program.
Draw in your program changes. To edit them, select them and go to View > Event Properties (Ctrl-F2 on Win).

don't know.

Does it only work on a PC ?
no, Mac too.

depends on your audio interface or sound card. adjust the interface's settings to minimize latency while making sure things don't get too glitchy.

or do I have to only monitor through headphones or speakers attached to axe fx?
no reason not to, if you want to really monitor without latency. that's essentially exactly the same as any other thing that claims zero latency monitoring.

also cant figure out how to get drum kit from hell to be seen? do I have to put it in a specific folder? other programs seem to find it.
check for "Dfh Sampler", although I believe the current version reports itself correctly as "EZdrummer" now. Or do you mean Superior or the older DFHS? You can force a re-scan of all plug-ins by going to Preferences (Ctrl-P), Plugins > VST, and clicking "Clear cache/re-scan".
