Produce Like A Pro: Rush Content

With so many guitarists being so good at copping tones accurately, this guy, eh, not so much. Too much gain, maybe due to the PU's, but I can hear the Chorus is fairly close. I think a more "tone-correct" guitar, like, oh, Idk, an ES335 would've been better than the new-for-winter-2021 EBMM BFR Axis.

Yeah, that kind of soured the entire thing for me. Warren is usually very much the "Pro" and
maybe he was stroking a buddy a little too much in this episode. Not sure. Definitely a miss
when the entire thing is supposed to be about "Tom Sawyer."

Gotta give him props for showing all the parts, accurately. Lifeson's songs can be hard to hear the chord voicings, but sounds like everything he showed was spot-on!

don't care much about the tone reconstructing - but any new rush tidbits I may not have known = 😍

I agree the chords for some reason sounded off maybe the amount of chorus was adding a dissonance to it, but I knew they were right from watching the video posted above many years ago.

I don't know. I feel like I could tune out the wisest man or woman in the world if their "tone" is unpleasant.
Stop talking now, please.......... :)

I didn't know Jeff Jones is still probably regretting NOT showing up for a gig.

ya - guess I said that wrong earlier - I loved the vid cuz it pointed out a few things I did not know about Rush before:
  • Jeff Jones.
  • Geddy's real name.
  • Moon Records / Not Fade Away.
...
had not come across those bits before

I skipped thru the guitar demo parts as I've seen so many similar elsewhere, but I was keen on the synth stuff as I have an OBx type plugin that I keep thinking that I'd like to have a midi foot controller like this for, to do some Rush like synth play along stuff.

I think the factory preset “limelite m@“ gets closer to the actual tone than this. Even though that preset is a little gained up, it’s spot on for Limelight lol.

Interestingly Alex frequently used similar chords and chord shapes all over an album... like 7sus4/sus2 varations on Moving Pictures. Also both YYZ and Camera Eye (and Red Barchetta in transition) modulate over two chords separated by a half step.

Because they're not. I always love a video where someone goes into minute detail of how they don't know how to play a song.
Which ones did you think were wrong?

There are a couple spots during the E, F#, G, A.... bit where it should be open D not E on the 4th string (3204, x204) but otherwise what he's playing pretty much matches with what Al demonstrates on the video linked above. (I don't think the open B is really in that part either, but I guess that detail isn't too important.)

One position thing about the Al lesson vs. studio: the verse E chord never seems to be at the 9th fret on the album. They all sound about the same and brighter than the next two chords, and there's no slide down to get to the sus4 pinky move after "The river". Also there are quite a few shots of that chord in the music video, always at 4th position.

I'm beginning to wonder if he layered both in the studio.
