CROWN XLS series amps for the Axe FX

Crown XLS are not so hot - lot of bass guys I know have had issues. I'd avoid the XLS line altogether.

How much does a power amp affect the tone of the axe fx ? And in what way?

Get a flat PA style power amp (not Matrix) and learn to tweak the advanced parameters - everything you need is in the Axe. Decent PA power amps will all sound the same, the main variable will be the input sensitivity which will affect how much signal you need to send it to fully drive it, but...

Back to a tube power amp / review about real speakers and power amps with the Axe II

+1 It's just a matter of knowing how do dial in the right combination of advanced parameters. Once you do that, a good flat PA style power amp (not Matrix) can take you way beyond what you can do with conventional gear IME. I can understand how some folks might have difficulty dialing it in...

About Matching Your Cabinet's Resonant Frequency

I measured the impedance curve of my Mesa Recto 2x12 loaded with 16 ohm series wired EV12L's a while back and the peak was right at 100 Hz. I'll see if I can dig up the curve and post it if anyone is interested.

    Power Amp for Bass

Sure thing - I totally understand where you're coming from, and I try to do the same. I'm glad you haven't had any reliability problems - I get really frustrated when I buy something and then have it break, die, crap-out, etc. on me because it costs me more to replace it. It seems like it is...

    Power Amp for Bass

A lot of the differences with lesser amps won't reveal themselves unless you really push them, then duty cycle comes into play. I know someone tested one of the Behringer bass amps and it was no where near its rated power, but if it's working for you, cool, keep crankin! Ultimately, you get...

    Power Amp for Bass

I play guitar and bass. Buy a quality PA amp - you can get great deals on used stuff. If you don't mind the weight, Crest CA series amps are top notch. I have a QSC PLX which I highly recommend. Carvin also represents a very good value. I would stay away from Behringer and the Peavy IPR...

    Recto sound, tweaking!

Love the V10 SW overall, but the Recto is the one model I still can't get dialed in. I've owned an original 2 CH rackmount Recto, and it's low end wasn't anywhere near as loose/sloppy as the current model, and I don't recall the newer 3 CH versions I've played being this way either - maybe they...

Loving the axe 2 for bass guitar

I've posted about the Axe Fx in non-Kemper threads as well, and while folks seem to like the tone and the potential it has to offer, they are generally put off at spending that kind of coin for something with one bass amp model in it, and I can't blame them. I play both guitar and bass (neither...

    SVT bass video

Just shot another quick video using the Axe FXII on the SVT setting through my custom 1810 cab I just finished. Really feels like a tube head with that big low end, and the cab reproduces it beautifully. I was running into the SWR Power 750 which does a good 750 watts into four ohms, and I'm...

Loving the axe 2 for bass guitar

Yeah, a lot of the bass players on TalkBass are interested in the Kemper; I continue to wave the Fractal flag, but it's hard to justify with 1 bass amp in the whole mix. A Hiwatt 400, Trace V8, Sadowsky SA200, B15, and a few SS models would seal the deal for a lot of folks.

Guitar and Bass clip through my custom cabs

I finally got around to shooting another video of my custom cabs with bass guitar, as well as clean and hi gain guitar. I find it pretty easy to get a good clean guitar sound through a bass or PA cab, but overdrive and hi-gain is the real differentiator - it will bring out any deficiencies...

Just keep in mind that the damage tolerance of composites is non-existant - you can't really repair them, and failure can be catastrophic - don't bang them around. A buddy of mine recently sold his AON and went back to a conventional plywood one - he really liked the cab but did comment that...

They are touted for keys as well as bass - for guitar, the fEarful's are overkill since you don't need that kind of low end, but I would imagine the new Crazy 8's would work very well and be even smaller/lighter to boot.

Axe-Fx II Firmware Version 3.03 Up

The JVM is a great sim, easily my favorite of the Marshalls. I goosed up the power supply filtering as well as a few other parameters in the advanced menu, added a bit of resonance and a little graphic EQ, and I'm good to go with some great high gain tones. I was sceptical when I heard...

    SLA2 getting way too hot?

It won't hurt running SS amps into higher loads, bridged or not as it is less stressful on the amp. That is kind of crummy if it is getting that hot running into 8 ohms, let alone 16 ohms.

    5150 vs slo 100

Not suprising since Peavy ripped off the SLO circuit (as did the Mesa DR and HK Triamp Channel 3). The SLO took a bit more intial tweaking, but I like the end results better. It has more clarity and refinement in a good way.

    EMG X Series?

The main thing to remember is to not leave the cord plugged in when you aren't using playing. The EMG site says battery life is 3000 hours. I've gone years before replacing, so I wouldn't say it is a concern.

Any chance to get a H&K Triamp amp sim ?

Indeed a great amp. I have the schematics and channel three is close to a Recto in terms of the R/C values, but there are enough differences with the filter supply, tonestack, negative feedback, and trannies that make it a whole different beast.

    Post Your Rig!

Current rig is a pair of Mesa Recto 2x12's loaded with EVM 12L Black Labels; each cab is 8 ohm. The SWR Power 750 is pushing 750 watts into the pair; it will do 850 watts at 2.7 ohms, so I am going to add another cab eventually for a 6x12 stack. It will blow your hair back.
  64. J

Axe FX vs Uberschall - convince me.

You don't need a tube power amp - get a really nice SS one. I'd also recommend getting a cab with some EV's that can handle the power - you will be able to crush anything in your path. IMO, you can get the Uber tone, and more - you can take it to another level that you can't achieve with more...

    Transformer Saturation (aka GRIND)

I was making a general comment about the tonality of the transformer in that amp - as you have noted, there are quite a few variables that affect a transformer's tone and behavior, and I wonder how in-depth Fractal modeled the properties of each amp's respective transformer. I started wondering...

    Transformer Saturation (aka GRIND)

It would be interesting to know how in-depth each amp model's tranny was modeled. The DeYoung for instance in the SLO has a pretty big impact on the overall tone of the amp as it is more hi-fi than the normal Plexi type.

Re: Loudspeaker for a Tech 21 Power Engine 60 (Celestion ins It might be OK, but I think there are better alternatives, especially if you are playing heavier music and want to crank it a bit - it is a lot easier to drive speakers in an open cab into overexcursion. Higher wattage speakers...
