Vai Academy 6.0 - 2022, Las Vegas

If anyone's doing a Fractal hang out while you're here, let me know (I live in Vegas). They're not offering a commuter option this time unfortunately, but would love to meet up!

Bummer... The days at the event are pretty full, so probably would have to be the day before or after the event itself.

Question to those who have been. From the past events and pics I’ve seen, there seems to be a healthy amount of kids at these camps. Is that the case? I’d feel like it’s a waste of money if it was a big musical day care/frat party. For the money I’d expect a serious learning environment.

Don’t get me wrong, I’m no stale ass old man but when it’s time to work, I wanna work.

There are typically a small handful of "kids"... Typically 13-17 age range.

And several I have experienced that might whip your ass on guitar!

My first ever jam at a camp I had a 14 year old on my right side 15 year old on my left.

We were playing "pass the cable"... I'm not a slouch at playing or improvising, but both of the kids out-played me (not that it was a competition).

They might be the more intent and "serious" of the attendees.

There's some "frat" type activity, but it's after hours and relegated to "adults".

At one of the Glen Cove NY camps, the upstairs 'pub' needed to be 21+ after a certain time by law...we pieced together a long enough cable that the young kids could stand at the doorway and jam with us :)

Haven't ever thought the kids to be a distraction in any way, at the 8 camps I've been to. Honestly they're more inspiring than anything else, both for just seeing someone young have that much enthusiasm for the instrument, and like @unix-guy said, a bit of a wake-up call on your own complacency ;)

and Im nothing if not complacent.
The older I get, the more I learn the guitar has less and less to do with actual playing. If that doesn't make any sense to anyone reading this, it will eventually.

I realized today that I hadn't booked a flight yet. That's fixed now. After the last year or two I've had, I'm really looking forward to this.

@nhgtrman - they are offering a commuter option now but it's not much of a savings - https://vaiacademy.com/#pricing
Thanks Tim, yeah I saw that, was literally I think a $200 discount which is pretty ridiculous haha. Would love to meet up with anyone attending, but I won't likely be in attendance.

So... I'll be there sometime on Weds afternoon. Grabbed a cheap hotel room deal in Las Vegas (not at Hilton Resort).

Anyone else planning to be there early and want to maybe grab dinner and hang out?

Alright, who's out here? :)

Had a fun night in Chris Stark's jam room, probably going to shoot for Joe Robinson's class in the AM and Nuno in the PM.

I have my Washburn N7 with me, I was changing strings on a couch down in the lobby bar earlier today and Nuno came over to say hello, lol.

(edit: laptop in the background of the shot of Steve, he was playing with Axe-Edit often over the course of the evening)

I live here does that count haha? Enjoy, wish I could've gone (as I write this from 30 minutes away).

Is it the lighting, or is he looking kind of scary thin? No judgement, just concerned, but none of my biz too.

Great shot of Steve!

Nice meeting you in person today, too :)

How can you not just smile - and to be honest, cry, watching this guy perform...

And then there's this guy, who made a brief appearance on the stage with Steve's band. Guess I'll figure out how to post the video when I get it. You had to tell Steve and his band what you wanted to do in about 10 seconds.

Mine was "A Dorian, in 7". He replied with "...in 7?" And of course not surprisingly, the band nailed it. 🎸

Here was my swing at jamming with the master

Nice!

@hippietim recorded both of our jams but I haven't seen them yet...

For those wondering, the "campers" were playing through Boss Katana amps with a Super Overdrive and a Crybaby in front. I have to say, they sounded pretty good cranked up!
