Robben Ford gig yesterday night / Dumble Ods question / tips

Saw yesterday robben ford live at yoshis oakland. Great great band, energy, playing...and ofcourse tone...

I need some advice since i will give the dumble ods simulationa a try...

I use 4-5 main tones in my patches: clean - light break up(crunch) - fuzz - distortion(drive)

I know i can get great cleans just with the amp block. But for the light break up tones what would guys do? Push the amp with a drive block and which drive than or would u higher the input gain. And for fuzz and lead distortion which drive sims do u use with the dumble. And last one: for the lead sound would u choose to push the clean channel with a drive block or go for a drive channel dumble sim?

I have gotten fantastic results with using the ODS clean and pushing the gain and the input trim. This gives an awesome bluesy mildly overdriven tone. I uploaded a preset back in the 10.x days. I've updated it for 12.x and refined it a bit and will upload when I get a chance.

A lot of the magic of the Dumble comes from the way it distorts. If I'm going for distortion from that amp, I'll use the amp's distortion. I'll only add a drive if I'm not getting what I want.

What works for one will not work for you. Especially considering different guitars.

With that said, the trick to dumble tones, broken up or lead, is less input gain then you might expect.

Hear are my two Dumble patches:

Strat Dumble sound in FW 12 (turned Zendrive on later in recording)

If either of those sounds attract you, you can download the patches as a starting point.

Damn Tyler...great tone man!

I tried the FW12 patch but it has some crazy output clipping, even with my guitar volume almost all the way down. Is that normal?

Bludojai Lead with Drve & Overdrive around 5 (or lower) or ODS Lead 3. Too much gain will kill the tone, you want punch and dynamics with some hair on it. Start with less drive than you think you need, or sounds right, and work with getting the tone with your hands.

Only turn up the drive if you absolutely have too, and only a little at a time until it feels right.

I set my global Level to negative -10 I believe... helps with signal to band's PA.

Just lower the amp's level a lot.

DAMN! :eagerness:

I will be checking these out later - I hope they translate even relatively close on my rig (and fingers) :)

The amp level is pretty loud on scene 1 and even louder on several other scenes... I just turned it down and had no further issues.

Hehe.......regarding gear porn - this is easy

I spotted a Hermida ZenDrive, TC Hall of Fame & Polytune, the big Boss Volume Pedal, Strymon Timeline, Vox Wah-Pedal and a little Boss Expressionpedal (I guess he uses it for the Strymon). Not sure about the Dumble, but I would guess this is this the green-light #102 model from 1982 (later reworked with the skyliner mod) -

My humble contribution regarding d-style tone:

That was righteous... Loved it! Thanks for sharing too!

thx for sharing but i strugle more with little break up tones...your recordings are nice driven tone which i like but dont have a hard time to dial in...

i get great cleans from the dumble...just could figure out yet how to get the break up ones...with a drive block i loose smth from the amp, with to high input or master volume
there is also smth wrong..

Try the ODS clean and push the gain to taste. You'd be surprised how nicely you get into mild breakup territory. Really sweet.
