Oh heck, I have no real idea, but I'd personally be surprised if it was an effects only unit- the current devices work so darn well as stand alone effects units as is! I often use both my Axe and FM9 for only effects, and they are superb. But hey, I'm wrong more often than not, so who knows. I'll happily wait and see.
The rig currently set up in the music room is my Tucana 3 with the Axe in 4CM, and it sounds absolutely great.
You're not wrong, FM9 is fantastic in 4cm with an amp. BUT... The FX8 (and the Line 6 HX Effects) are MADE to be effects only and are automatically unity gain. There was no volume knob. No fiddling with output levels and such. FX8 had a magical path selector thingy where it would place things in parallel or other configurations you chose and automatically do kill dry, blah blah blah. Just pure simple effects magic :) The ONLY reason I got rid of mine is because of my stupid gear addiction and feeling that it was one generation "behind" the quality of Axe FX III effects. So I will buy a new effects only Fractal item in a freaking heartbeat to use with my tube amps and Friedman preamp pedals.

I completely agree. An updated FX8, that is very (as in VERY) similar in form factor and function, is top of my wishlist.

I wouldn't expect a new unit to be any better in terms of unity gain than the Axe3 and FM9. Those are actually way better in terms of signal to noise ratio than the FX8 was, from memory.

I still don't think it's an FX only, but I does look more likely than I originally thought if those pics are accurate.

I'm big enough to admit when I get it wrong

Cliff has quoted something to the effect of only the Axe FX III beats the signal of the FX8. But, I'd have to look that up again. I need to learn the FM9 better, but I definitely get a better signal with the FX8 and my Ethos pedal. But, I'm trying it in a different way than when I run it with the FX8.

That quote was pretty old, I think... Probably predates the FM3 and FM9.

Man, looking at that picture and the perspective I’m not convinced it is that small. I’m only on my phone but that green guitar pedal look about the size of the top where the display is on the mystery box not including the four foot buttons. That may be a mini volume or expression pedal but how minions it really? I just don’t know. Blurry image and all. I will not be surprised either way if it is a smaller foot print or the size of the Fm and FC cases.
It's on a Pedaltrain Metro 20 or Metro 24, which are 8" in depth. The new thing is definitely more like 7" in depth which is less than the FM and FC.

How are you running the CFD ( set up cables etc ) into the FX8 @pima1234 ..?

As I have both love boxes too , and I was saying to Robbie that I was gonna try this set up

A fx only unit that can do 4 cable with a load box and an ir loader, and had channel switching ….that would be very cool, might even persuade me to get a tube amp out of storage. like the waza TAE but done right. But I don’t think that pictured unit. Is it…not big enough.
