My guitars require the 18db pad on Input 1 (LP's with JB's in the back), to avoid clipped waveforms as tested via Pro Tools. YMMV?

You want guitar level in, guitar level out to your amp, whatever your amp's FX Loop sends (typically line level but not always), and whatever your amp's FX Loops's return wants (typically line level but not always).

Good luck, works fine here as long as you properly adjust the above, and importantly, properly set Input 2's Noise Gate's threshold.

Tube gear is inherently noisy, so setting the Input 2 noise gate should minimize the guitar amp's preamp's noise when you're not playin
Ah ok - I've tried all that - the only thing that worked for me was to send the out via spdif to a DAC with a balanced output and it was very quiet as if I was plugging in pedals to the front

As I understand it - unlike the other products the fm3 is not geared towards 4cm

Sounds like you have a ground loop issue, try Fractal's humbuster cables or an ground loop iso transformer (which is what you're essentially doing running above setup).

The FM3/AFX3/FM9, all work fine for 4CM as long as the gain staging and ground loop issues are correct. The only thing they lack in this regard is an analog thru for the purists who think they can hear the their high quality A/D - D/A conversions in front of noisy tube gear, or feel the roughly 4ms of latency (which is like standing four feet from your guitar cab).
