Lovin' The Axe FX 2 So Much, I'm thinking of selling my Boogie Mark V. Shall I?

Hi all,

So I've been playing around today on my axe fx 2 thru my boogie mark v just doing some tweaking. I thought I'd have a go at running the 4CM and using some boogie tones to see what it sounded like thru the axe fx. I must say I'm lovin' the axe fx 2 more than my boogie at the moment. So much that I had the axe fx set on recto orange and forgot it was on that patch. I thought it was the amp believe it or not lol.

So anyway I'm seriously thinking of selling my mark v now (even though I haven't finished paying for it yet) and just buying a couple of atomic reactors or power amp.

I just wondered if any of you guys out there have sold their boogie stuff for the axe?

Thanks

Paul

I thought about selling my original 2 channel triple rectifier and over sized recto cab, but then it occurred to me that it makes an incredible back up, not to mention, some ppl just want to use a real amp in certain projects because they dont want to know that there is a better way (IMO) to get that mesa sound. I use the Axe-Fx II for all my stuff live and in the studio, but a buddy of mine recorded his last album with my mesa. No worries, I bought this thing 15 years ago and it has served its purpose well. Now it just collects dust and looks cool in the corner for the most part. LOL.

Having the Mark V as a backup would be a great idea. I use to use my Mark IV as a backup for my Ultra. Then I bought a II and now I use the Ultra as the backup. The Mark IV is long gone and I don't really miss it as the Axe Fx covers what it could do and more.

Thanks guys, I guess your right I should keep the mark v as a backup. The funny thing is when I plug the axe thru my monitors with my mac it sounds really cool. Then when I plug straight into the mark v at the front end it sounds fairly trebly and high ended. I've tried tuning the power amp and cab sims on and off and it seems to sound better with one of them on. But then again when I used with the 4CM it sounds different again and I tend to prefer it. Could be because I've used the fx loop in certain amps for years and my ears have got used to it.

Who knows? I'm definitely gonna be buying some atomic reactor cabs think that will help

Thanks again

Paul

I have a habit of keeping quite a lot of my old [used by me] gear around - FOREVER! Drives my wife nuts!
I found an old Crate "stereo" amp, 2x10" speakers, solid state from the year dot in a closet the other week - while looking for something else. Foot-switch still stuffed in the back. Still works, tho' some dust needs bowing out. Great beginner amp LOL!

I still have my Atomic 50w, L6 Flex III amp, Roland GR33, VG99, FC300, BOSS stomp boxes, a few guitars/basses and a number of rack-mount effect units such as ART SGX2000 (that dates me), Aphex, Antares, BBE and other effect units (anyone remember the "Wedge"?), headphone amps... and that's just in the back room. I have rack units sitting in a closet for backups - like crossovers and other PA gear - maybe I should sell them? Then there's also $30K of PA gear in the trailer! At the end of the year, I find myself asking why the heck I need all this stuff. I don't, but resale on a lot of it is worthless, and the financial gain isn't worth the corresponding loss.

However, I do not have a single tube amp left - other than the Atomic. Already had replace power tubes in that this year as some "numb nut" snagged it on a door jamb while loaded on a dolly during gig load out, knocked it off, smashing one of the tubes. (I know... I know <sigh>). All the rest are gone. Too expensive, too tempremental, too limiting, too heavy, too much constant tweaking, too much... Axe (Ultra and now II) has replaced them all.

But I'd still keep the Mark V !! :)

I either sold all my tube heads or and still trying. Keeping a little blackstar 60 combo, and a little carvin combo. Sold a markV, XTC, Elmwood, and a bunch of others.

I'd keep it... Not because it's better than the AxeFX, but because it's a different vibe. There are musicians I know who normally love a tweaked-out and perfect IEM mix, but sometimes they're playing at a real raw-feeling gig and on those nights they prefer an old beat-up wedge — because it gives them a different feel (not better or worse, just different). In my mind, the AxeFX is all tweaked & perfect, but if I were to take a "down & dirty rock'n'roll" gig at some hole-in-the-wall bar, I think I'd have more fun taking my favorite amp and a stomp box or two. At least that's how I imagine it... I don't have any first-hand experience in the matter.

six months ago I put my BAD CAT CUB II r up for sale. I didnt use it for as longs as I had my Ultra.

Just before the buyer arrived to pick it up, I took it for a test spin, just to check if it was working properly.

It sounded awesome. AND I regretted selling it on the spot. But, unfortunately there was no turning back......

So my recommendation is:

IF you really love your amp so much. Dont sell it!

Keep it as an unexpected Christmas present for yourself :-)

Greetings for the holiday

I sold my IIC+ and MKIII's. No regrets here!!!

as great as axe fx is, sometimes it's still good to plug into the real thing.
if you can afford both, why not keep it.

My thoughts exactly. Everytime I see concert footage of someone cranking through a Marshall stack, I want to plug into my Marshall and 4x12's :) ........ I think I'll keep them. I think one good tube amp is enough though, pick a favorite and sell the rest off to good homes (unless you're a collector of amps).

Hahaha this is me in print here! :D I have quite a load of gear, some I use a LOT, some just collects dust, or is used for a specific sound when in studio mode. It's great to have some of the stuff - I don't always have hours on end to tweak the axe, and sometimes I just like the feel and sound of cranking a tube amp up :D I don't think ANYTHING beats that - the axe might sound better, but that FEEL.....oh it's there all right!

I HAVE sold a lot of my amps tho.....I still have a couple that get some mild use, but not nearly as much as the axe. Before, these were always cranked ;) Stuff like the line 6 stuff etc I sold for next to nothing, and haven't regretted it. If you're in a position to keep the amp, it's an AWESOME amp! I was going to get one when it came out, but decided to get an axe some time after instead. There are times when it's good to just grab a head and cab and make some noise.....

Careful - your still playing through the power section of the Mark V and through a real CaB - Atomics will be an entirely different beast and using those you'll be using Cab sims. I'd keep the V, buy the Atomics - get used to FRFR, then sell the V if you want. I had Ultra --> Power Amp --> 2 Marshall Cabs and switched over to Ultra --> Another Power Amp --> 2 Atomic Passives. I like both setups so I kept both - as mentioned above, not because one is better, but because the two are different.

Of course, only you can make the decision. I'd base the choice on whether you need the cash, and what you need out of your rig.

Unless you are in a position to always run direct to FOH and use IEMs or the stage monitors of your PA, you're going to need a power amp and some type of cab on stage anyway (be it FR or a regular cab). I find that using my Mark IIC+ combo with the Axe fills all these needs while providing great tonal flexibility and also redundancy in case something were to fail. I find the Mark power amp works well even with power amp sims on (I actually prefer this), so it must not be coloring things too much (or if it is I like it anyway). Using a guitar cab eliminates the flexibility of getting the sound of different cab sims, but again in my case I like the sound of the EVM12L in the combo, so no problem there either. The whole rig is a little heavier than a SS power amp/FR cab would be, but not that much.

If you like the sound of your V and don't need the cash, you might want to try just going 4CM.

I'd keep it. I bought one when I already had Axe FX, and they really do different things. You can't replicate it with Axe FX, or the other way around. Oftentimes, MK V is all I really need, so I don't even fire up my Axe rig. I lack restraint, and there's too much opportunity to tweak there. Mark is dialed in so well, I'm afraid to touch the knobs now. :-)

I sold my Mesa single Rec but kept my Mark IV and Tremoverb. They haven't been powered up in literally 3 years (since I got my Ultra - now have a II). Those amps went through the good ole days with me (I have "retired" from the bar wars) and I have a great sentimental attachment to them. I won't sell them unless I need more room. They do look great in the room! :lol

To the OP, I agree with the advice above - don't part with your V until you get a FRFR and are sure you can live with that solution.

I'd definitely sell the V - since they're only worth a few hundred, maybe you could pick up an MFC......let me know and I'll be glad to lift that burden........hate to see a fellow Axe owner with such a problems......just trying to help, you know........being the holiday season and all.......

Lol!!! A few hundred?!?
