Just bought some EV PXM-12MP’s

I see these advertised as god for "short-throw" PA speakers as well as their monitor function. FOr those with experience with both Would you say these are not as loud as an Atomic CLR?
They’re rated for 129dB IIRC. I’ve had mine putting out about 110dB, which was keeping up with the FOH system.

They can get very loud, and I refused to stand in front of them when they were doing it because I value my hearing.

This is interesting. I generally find my tone better through the EVs for some reason. Two of the bands I play in use QSC K12.2s and the other uses Bose sticks. I'm sure some of that is that I tune my tones with my EVs, but I generally find the response of the EVs a little better. I will say the Bose are closer IMO, but I still generally prefer my EV tone. Also, I should note that the QSCs still sound really good, I just prefer the EVs.

One other caveat, I tend to like a little squishier guitar tones and feel, so it could be that the EVs deliver this better than that tight, punchy guitar tone. Maybe typical FOH does that better.
The EVs are indeed the best floor monitor I have found for the fractal but… the Laney cab had that “real cab” compression and feel under my fingertips. Standing away from them there was a clear winner in tone exactly but as the player, the Laney felt so nice. I’m actually about to purchase the fender Fr-12 cab after doing a lot of research and listening to examples where the fr-12 sounded even better than the Laney!

Please post your experience of the Gender vs Laney when/of you get it. I am considering one of these for home.

I've never heard the Laney but I own the EV and a pair of FR-12s and I far prefer the FR-12 over the EV.

Are you concerned that the fr colors what you're hearing in ways that foh and recordings don't hear?

When I record I don't go through the FR12. I use my Adams monitors or headphones. When I gig its mostly stage volume. I've had a couple bigger gigs connected to FOH and I don't recall a problem.

Good to know! I was already putting my EV’s up for sale after trying the Laney. Of course I have my concerns buying before trying but the mounting evidence that the FR-12s are widely loved has given me the confidence to drop the money. At least sweetwater is good about returns in the event it’s a flop.

That doesn’t match my experience with my EVs. They output what I send to them, without injecting their own sound coloration.

They’re professional stage monitors made by one of the top sound companies around and it’s expected that what goes in will come out correctly.

I have an EV, an FR12, and the Laney212... they're all VERY good and usable. The EV is compact, loud, consistent... I'll be getting a 2nd. The FR12 is the easiest to adjust on the fly with the top controls. After getting used to the Laney, it was probably my favorite. It packs the punch of a real cab. I did end up selling it though cause I got sick of lugging it up and down stairs.

Lately I'm having great success in part because of upgrades in the FM9 and AF3, but also because I'm dialing in things first in my EVs, then checking with studio monitors. I was finding that I overtweaked when working in reverse order. Our sound guy says most rooms he doesn't have to do much if anything to it. Played a large venue Saturday and the engineer said he left my guitar pretty much flat and "maybe cut 4k just a hair." Cell phone videos of it sounded great out front...understanding they are cell phone vids, but in general, I'm feeling good that what I'm doing is working.

I have the FR12, CLR and EV. Now I wanna try the Laney! Of the three I have, I prefer the EV because of size and ease of transport. To me it hangs with the CLR really well. My CLR is for sale...tho its a Neo, it still is kinda goofy to pack in my trunk and such. I keep the FR12 for gigs where I need a forward-facing monitor for stage fill and because its so flexible and easy to dial in quickly. That said, I can't get the quality of mids with the FR12 that I'm getting with the EV and CLR. And it may just be that I've had the EV the longest, but dialing in sounds seems to work better with the EV than the other two.

are you using an archangel preamp with the FR12 or is it stock? the upgraded preamp is a massive improvement.

This is my experience as well with the EV and FR12. I wound up selling the FR12. I've run the EV on a pole behind me for a stage fill but that's kind of cumbersome and it really doesn't have great dispersion or throw in that configuration. I have an EV Evolve 50 and have used that for the some purpose and it fills the room really well, but looks kind of goofy. My next plan for those situations is to just bring a guitar cab and use my TC BAM200. 90% of the time I just use the PXM as a monitor in front of me and let the FOH fill the room but there are occasions where that isn't feasible.

Was this preamp just to fix the hiss in some of the older ones? My 2 FR-12's don't have the hiss problem. Would the archangel preamp still improve it? If so, in what ways?

This is rather surprising to me coming from the one that started this thread! If it hadn't been for you I may have bought something different and I was looking! I still have my EV's but I have been curious of the Laney offering. I have listened to YT demos and they come across as woolly or dark sounding by comparison.

The Fender FR sounds good but I was never really convinced that I needed to change up from something that already sounded really good and had great customer service to boot!

I’ve been a happy user for sure but… when you try something new and it’s obviously better, GAS is inevitable 😅

That's the same sort of comment I get from FOH.

My process is to set up my presets at 90dB+ using my Ollo headphones, which, according to the frequency response chart for my particular pair are within 3dB of being flat, then do a final touch-up during sound-check at stage-volume if it doesn't sound right.

At stage volume with the sound coming from the EVs, I initially found that I'd have added too much gain to compensate for the lack of acoustic-coupling, but I've learned to use less than I think I'd need. I leave the preset alone after that.

So you're not missing the Coax vibe that the EV's have? That was one of the things I noticed early on with the two different types of systems. The Coax sounded more guitar speaker like with how the sound came off the front of the box but just had a wider dispersion.
