It Happened Again...

Maybe there should be a specialist in regions or major cities that can do a house call for people? Even if it's just to check your sanity. I have to think that most issues with the Axe where users say the Axe is not even in the ballpark of the right sound come from either the unit malfunctioning or user error.

Now that everything's running right again, I am almost instantly nailing every sound that I had to tweak to hell to get over the last few weeks. I even had my global EQ at -5db for everything over 2k in the last two week and now I'm back to 0db. Now it's like hitting a homerun everytime you get up to bat. This machine is so darn good.

Edit: And just big ups to Cliff for weighing in on my little issues. A while back he even told me that if I had to mess with my global eq so much then there was something very wrong. I just chalked it up to FRFR and headphones. But he was right.

Did anyone having these problems do a system reset after they noticed the problem? Did that change anything?

I had a similar issue a while ago. It sounded like there was a highpass filter set to 315Hz. Whenever I'd have the issue I had to reboot a bunch of times. The issue was resolved after I sent my Axe-Fx II mark 1 to FAS support to get the output 2 Hiss mod done. When I got it back everything was wiped out and reset. I haven't had the issue since.

Yeesh... If Fractal is going to do that for every person who feels they have a borked unit, the company won't stay afloat. There's probably a better way.

Not necessarily suggesting every customer gets a loaner. But.....as Cliff sees fit, he can swap units out if he wants to explore someone's unit for strange behavior and the person gets a loaner in those special cases.

The idea of a "dump" of all internal data/patches/settings would be a cool concept for Cliff to load and see if he can determine what's going on remotely. I'm sure that's difficult given user equipment varies (speakers, power amps, cabs, audio interfaces, etc)

just happened to me going to 14.02.
got fizzy and harsh, tried system reset and update presets. did not change anything.
did the update again and all is well.

Updating to 14.02 today actually went a long way towards smoothing out the top end that was sounding so harsh to me.
Not ready to state that it fixed all my issues with modeling in general, but this thread is intriguing to say the least.

This is interesting. I actually went back to 14 from 14.02 because things just didn't sound as good to me and I was perfectly happy with 14. Nothing I could put my finger on really, just something off. I do seem to remember it was the high end I wasn't liking though. I did the whole system reset and update all presets things before I went back. Maybe I should try downloading again.

+1 to what OP said, just get the same thing. Tried first to reset the system parameters and reload the 14.02 but no changes.

So after that i tried:
14.02 => 14.00 = same
14.00 => 14.02 = same
14.02 => 13.07 = good sound !
13.07 => 14.02 = good sound !

It is not the first time it happens to me too. Everything was vary harsh / ice picky. There is something wrong during the update process but i dunno what, it like when you change the cab size, things starting to be fizzy/harsh.

Cliff, here's a suggestion that you could consider....have an "inventory" of properly working units that you could ship to customers "in exchange" for their "troubled" units while you inspect/research them? This would both give you the info you need and also give the customer the most ideal temporary solution to their missing their baby while it's being inspected. Similar to how a customer feels when dropping their car off to a dealer for repair and wish they could get a loaner car while it's in the shop (but typically never do)........Not to suggest how you should run your business, as I'm a loyal and faithful customer that talks Fractal up every time I get the opportunity. This just seems like the customer touch that your company is known for and would go far to expand the word of mouth marketing that all companies need/desire. You guys are the best company I've ever invested in and I'm only trying to help.

Graydon Stuckey did this for me a few years ago when I sent my Guytron GT100 to him for some repair work. Sent me a GT40 free of charge (minus shipping) to tide me over while my GT100 was given the works. I sent my head back to him in the box he sent the GT40 in. Fantastic customer service!

Has anyone checked if their Cab SIM was turned off during the upgrade for whatever reason? I thought I read somewhere where this happened to someone else.

I had checked cab sim and power amp sim over and over. All settings were fine.

Suggestion for Cliff: for these updates, maybe the software can do some kind of error check in the process to make sure that the bits transmitted properly. Alternatively if there was a software utility that could be run to check the accuracy of the upgrade after it is performed. I've had this problem also. Maybe it has to do with individual PC setups and transmission rate and noise? Anyway an error check utility could be extremely helpful.

I did not checked on mine but I think the sound would have been be totally different from what I heard. Sound was just "normal" but with the addition of a kind of ears-piercing highs and harsh mids. I also noticed a strong "bee hive" effect when it happened and all cabs were awful.

if it really sounds that bad, a recording of the "problem" would suffice i think.

just someone. please record it. then upload a preset that sounds bad.

basic. troubleshooting.

Just throwing this out there. A few FW updates ago, I had the cab size parameter on one my patches go to minumum. It sounded like a "beehive" (or the chipmunks). It may be worth a look.

I update to 14.02 and everything sounded extremely ice picky and grainy.

This did happen to me as well. It happened right after I updated to 14. After playing on it for a while I was saying to myself, "if this is what 14 sounds like, I'm going to have to go back to my old firmware." But the next day, I started up the Axe and all was well. I did nothing other than shut it off and start it back up the next day. Everything sounded very harsh and was definitely not normal for what I usually expect the Axe to sound.

There are quite a few factory presets where that size parameter is set to minimum in the "Y" parameters. It sounds pretty horrible, and it's prevalent enough that If I'm fooling with X/Y in a cab block, my routine is "copy X to Y," select Y, and then start to tweak the Y parameters.
