Fryette vs Tube head as power amp

Well I have a 2902 on the way! I work fast :p May keep one of the EVs just in case

You can’t go wrong man, you just can’t. I have a 2902 as well, and I just didn’t feel like skimping on power. Big iron equals big tone. Is it heavy? I mean I guess? But I also don’t care personally, that’s never once been the reason I buy or don’t buy something. I had zero desire to go down the power amp rabbit and try all of these other options that supposedly measure up but ultimately just fall way short.

Nobody is talking about the impedance curves. Are they stacked when you use a tube power amp on top of the Axe with power amp modelling on? I think so.

Anyways... I run 2 4x12s with an older Crown power amp that's like 300 watts a channel. Wallop.

Agreed, they’re heavy but the bigger transformers translates to bigger tone. Even other Fryettes like the PS2 and 100 just don’t compete even against one channel of the 2902 or 2502, IMO.

When I run Axfx models into my lower coloration tube power sections with amp modelling on, I always choose "Resistive Load" as the Imp Curve on the amp block speaker page so that the virtual imp curve does not skew the analogue imp curve.

Agreed. It’s pretty evident under a mic, or if they are side by side. If they aren’t, sure, people will say the difference is negligible. But it definitely isn’t, at all. I love the flexibility of it too, even though it’s super simple. If im running certain amps with the power amp section on(like a plexi model or something that gets most of its overdrive from the power amp. If I’m using a more high gain amp where most of the distortion comes from the preamp, I’ll turn off power amp modeling and then use the VHT’s presence and depth controls like I would on the normal amp that has those features ( like a 5150 or 5153 for instance , or Herbert). It’s completely devastating this way, absolutely no doubt.

It works for me.

I like the modular assembly of the 4X12 mounted with 2 2X12s !!

Yes, they are. So you have a range of options, from just rolling with it (which lots of people like) to making preset changes in the amp block to land where you want it. That said, I found that Power Station was an extremely stiff amp as tube amps go, more like a hifi really. So the doubled curves were more like adding chili powder to a meal than changing the fundamental flavor of it, so to speak.

I returned the palmer class D amp for a refund and i will try the pedal baby 100 as a last chance before going full tube again and kill all transportation and weight benefits. I hope class A/B will give me a more playfull feel and there is also more headroom with 16ohm cabs. Unfortunately dual mono it is from now on.

Have you also tested whether a simple preset only with In/Out and Amp/(Cab) block gives you the feel back? It may also be a latency problem with a digital wireless system or just some setting like Air parameter.

Edit: Why I'm asking: Some days before I tested my FRFR preset with cab block against the same preset without cab block with a V30 cab. I could feel a little difference, with cab block is was less direct (AXEFXIII Turbo, 50% CPU). In global setup I reduced the quality and then I didn't feel it anymore, but I don't use the low quality setting anymore.

Hard to tell now as the unit is back to the store. I'do my best with the pedal baby cause i'll stick with it from now on.
