FM3 Now Shipping

Some people have assumed that the invites dropped off after initial public release of information pertaining to the FM3. I don't think this is the case, but if we assume invites dropped off, we might have just passed the 'worst' case (AX8 waitlist; Day 1). I don't think things magically changed so soon after Day 1 and am also assuming a year's wait from my waitlist joining and invite. Again, it'll be cool if that's not the case, but all we can do is wait. I think over the next month we will have a better indication of what to expect longer term (for those of us that didn't join immediately, etc.).

I remember life before the waitlist. I used to be a guitar player. I remember being so excited about obtaining an fm3 I would check my email at least twice a day. My obsession soon resulted with me scoffing at my current rig in utter disgust. Then I found this forum, and everything changed. My days were spent turning the pages, reading the texts of those who came before me. I began to compile a multitude of evidence which sent me hurling through a rollercoaster of emotions. One minute laughing like a lunatic deep into the night followed by moments of depression, rage, sadness, hope, abandonment, madness etc. My disillusioned mind became numb, and I soon after metamorphosized into a entrepreneurial scientist/mathematician crunching the numbers, reviewing the formulas repeatedly to no avail. But today I make a stand. No more will I go on like this. I am a guitar player, and I will play my rig once again! No matter how inferior it may sound. No matter how many times the fm3 passes through my mind! No matter how much blood, and sweat, and whiskey is spilled. I will play, and the earth will shake!

And we are passed the 23rd. Sweet.

For the no-headphones it looked like it took about 19 days to get through the 23rd. About 15 days so far with the headphone models, so moving a hair faster(?).
I'm a data guy too. If you look at the time it took to get through the combined AX8 and 4/23 waitlist, then the news is very good.

Non-headphone version - 3 days short of a full 2 months (2/12 - 4/9*)

Headphone version - 17 days total (5/11 - 5/28)

From that perspective, the list is moving almost four times faster now than it did the first time through. (Please let me know if you think that I have any of those dates wrong.)

*see bottom of page 63 of this thread for confirmation that 4/9 is the correct date.

but if you exclude the AX8 part, can you compare how long it took for us to get from April 23 to 24 when it comes to the non headphone jack vs the headphone jack list?

Here are the key dates which appear to line up with the information @TheloniusJ posted earlier:

Non-headphone Version
---------------------------------------
Feb 12 - Invites start
Mar 19 - AX8 waitlist complete*
Apr 9 - 4/23/2019 waitlist complete**

Headphone Version
---------------------------------------
May 11 - Invites start
May 13 - AX8 Waitlist complete***
May 28 - 4/23/2019 waitlist complete

Nobody has written about non HP version for weeks. We were at the june waitlist... Im July....I guess they might have all been sold?
Not sold out, but they stopped sending non-HP invites in order to start the headphone invites. Once they catch back up to where they were (mid-June) they'll start sending out invites with the option for either while supplies last of the non-HP ones, assuming they didn't send them all to other distributors.

Thanks for the analysis.

You're dates line up with what I have. I actually found an error in my data. For some reason I had the first invite of of headphone version for 4/23/19 waitlists on 5/8/20. Not sure where I got that. So that was definitely increasing my calculated time to get through the invites for that day (since 5/13/20 was the correct day).

As you noted, I was only looking at how long it took us to get through 4/23/19. I like your analysis better since it has us moving faster!

Thanks again for the analysis.

My understanding is that the rest of the non-HP models were sent to European distributors to begin tackling their respective waitlists.
I can agree as I got my non hp invite last saturday 😊 but I also passed as I really do want the integrated headphone amplifier and output.

So if I was one of the unlucky ones that joined the waitlist a few months ago in February 2020, I most likely won't be getting an invite until Feb 2021?

No one can say, really. People are assuming it will be faster but from what we've seen--given all of the 'hiccups' that have occurred since launch--we are generally seeing around a year wait time (give or take a few days).

I'm only going to look at the Headphone version because that's the one that matters going forward.

Currently it's been around a year wait time because it took around a year for them to start shipping. But you need to remember, it was a 1 year wait time because it took them a year to start shipping. And they only got through the first DAY of waitlisters yesterday.

We know it took them from the 13th to the 28th to get through 1 day of the waitlist. That's 15 days. If you assume that's how long every day will take, then it'll take them 15 years to get through 1 year of the waitlist.

This is obviously not realistic, but it's one of the problems with drawing a linear conclusion from non-linear data. The number of orders per day is not even every day, it varies. And the speed they get through the list also varies depending on how many people order vs decide not to. Assuming both are linear (the same every day forever), gives us our 15 year estimate which is obviously wrong.

Estimating it'll also always take a year from the time you waitlisted because it's been ~10-12 months for non-HP units and ~12-13 months for headphones units is the exact same mistake. It was a year for the people at the start of the list because it was a year before the started shipping headphone units. But although it's less obviously wrong, this is still wrong to assume that relationship will continue linearly.

Making some educated guesses about the shape of a preorder list, the largest rate of people signing up to the list will be at the start when everyone who was paying attention to the end of the AX8 and getting excited for a Axe FX III generation floor unit sign up. And everyone tells everyone that a new product has just been announced with a waitlist and people sign up. After that the signups will be less frequent: People who decide to buy one later, people who only found out about fractal later, people who missed the first announcements, etc. This is why people think the list will speed up.

That, and because the 15 year estimate is obviously wrong so it has to speed up.

Also, we've already seen it happen with the non-HP version. April 23rd took almost 2 months for the non-HP list, but in the month that followed they made it to mid-June.

So no, barring some major unforeseen circumstances, you won't be waiting until February 2021 for your unit.

It also doesn't account for manufacturing forecasting or throughput. The safe assumption is that the team at Fractal is trying their best to get inventory for both themselves and distributors to sell as many units as possible. One should therefor arm themselves with patience, or trade impatience for $$ and buy one of the marked up units on reverb. ymmv

Thanks. I really appreciate that.

You mentioned adjusting your expectations based on data in one of your posts, and I must say that your post was eye opening for me in terms of adjusting my expectations. I had not realized before reading your post how much of the speed up was due to the amazingly fast processing of the AX8 folks the second time through the list. It is kind of mind blowing to realize that they spent over a month on those folks the first time through the list and were done with them in only two days the second time through. Your post made me realize that the burst of speed in those first two days had skewed my perception of the overall speed at which they are moving through the list.

Thank you for opening my eyes to that.
