Favorite IR(s)

thanks for posting these. me likey.

Question: You have FM3 and axe3 metal presets, will the axe3 stuff work for the FM9? (match blocks or multiple pitch or anything?) thanks
I'm really not up on compatibility between the units, so I couldn't tell you. sorry about that

Funny... that blend reminds me of the parable of the weight of the ox: you've got an IR by Ownhammer, an IR by ML, and an IR by Fractal Audio, blended by Austin Buddy! The Wisdom of Crowds!
I realize that this is a very old thread, but... Does anyone know the "recipe" for that blend? Specifically, which factory cabs exactly, and in what proportion?
Apologies in advance if this is a well known strategy or if it's been answered elsewhere (I'm brand new to the III platform and learning stuff by the truckload)

I use the Valovirtuous IR from Bogren Digital's Lead & Clean pack for pretty much everything.

Currently,
York Audio MV30 pack SM7 and N22 combinations,
York Audio AMPG 4x10 SM7 and R121 combinations.

Finding an IR that I really like is like finding a specific grain of sand on the beach. I can't stand 99.99% of all the IRs that I've tried.

The characteristics I look for are wide bandwidth and minimal comb filtering, especially with distortion tones. Something that sounds up front, balanced, and clear. I haven't found a single one that fits the bill within the unit. And I've bought packs, only to immediately wish I could get a refund after listening to each one.

Smoothing radically increases potential candidates, but I can't bring smoothed IRs into the FM9 without a major headache that just isn't practical considering my time constraints. So for my touring gigs, I can't rely on any IR that needs smoothing.

I'm open to recommendations for IRs that don't sound excessively comb filtered, assuming they aren't too expensive.

Do any dynacabs work for you?
What are you using now?

Pretty much anything from James Santiago. I was introduced to him at the first Axe Fest (2012 LA Amp show). I've been using his IRs since then. I've been recently blending his IRs with my own IR mixes. They seem to add "breath" to whatever I'm trying to capture, whether it's clean, EoB, or high gain.

Look at post #15 of this thread. There is a screenshot of the three IRs mixed 👍

No better or worse than standard IRs. I liken moving the virtual mic around to scrolling through a list of fixed IRs.
I lean toward the IRs that sound less comb filtered, that have a balanced spectrum, and have good bass extension. I currently blend in a Red Box or Palmer IR to try to reduce the insane comb filtered sound of most IRs, as this is what I used to do before Smoothing (or Dephase), and I no longer have it in the FM9. The Palmer and Red Box sound flat and lifeless on their own, but the combination with cab IRs is the only compromise I've found so far.

Which IRs are you using that sound the least comb filtered to you?

I thought i was the only one who felt this way about IRs. I also use the Palmer and Redbox IRs frequently.

Oh thanks, I hadn't really understood that this picture was referring to the same mix!

I tried it and it's mostly good but extremely bright (I'll need to tame that)... Probably my guitar/pickups/amplification

Been messing around with a bunch of different ones, try this:

Dyna-Cab
4x12 1960TV
Ribbon
Pos: 6.0
Dist: 18.0

Dyna-Cabs sound really clean and hi-fi to me. Single mics have little to no comb filtering. The ribbon sounds super dark at default distance but backed way off it opens up a lot and gets more balanced. Get the overall tone from the distance, not the position. Then fine tune with the position and smoothing to adjust high end.

I use a combination of Celestion and York Audio.

Celestion
  • G12M Greenback - 4x12
  • Heritage G12M - 4x12
  • G12 EVH - 4×12

York Audio
  • MRSH M20
  • MRSH 412 M25

I'm a little late to the party, but what a great thread! Can I ask/suggest that along with your favorites perhaps describe what type of music/tones you like?
