I'm delighted to see how many people have cited this particular solo. For general info, Steve Lukather (Toto, Michael Jackson, et al) also named it as his favourite solo ever in a Guitar Player interview some years back.

For anyone who doesn't know it, it's easilyfound on YouTube. There are also numerous tab files floating around and it is well worth learning, even if this isn't your normal style of playing.

As a teen, hearing Night Ranger's "Don't Tell Me You Love Me" (Watson/Gillis) made me want to learn guitar... I still remember how I felt when I heard it.

Hotel California is the quasi perfect solo, I don't think that was sarcasm. It's melodic, the phrasing is perfect, harmony parts, etc. One thing it ain't: it's not fast, but that's no criterium IMO.

Loads of solos I like but favourites of all time, a stand out one for me is Alex Lifeson on Limelight, it's just so unique. I also like Steve Hackett's solo in Firth of Fifth, beautiful melody.

+1 on the Limelight solo! Alex at his best!

in general, weezer blue album solos.
i rarely listen to weezer anymore, but those old songs are still always as good as i remember.

oh right... the "why"... like a couple other posters, i hate solos that don't add anything but a solo to the song. generally, weezer seem to have solos that carry the emotion of the song in a way that vocals alone never could.

Nothing Else Matters - Metallica: One of the few solos that James plays. It's emotionally active in the song, uses a few simple licks to get its point across and transitions so perfectly back into the main rhythm. I wish I could craft a solo this powerful. You just can't listen to the opening bend without clenching your fist and closing your eyes. This was our wedding song!

Love Thing - Satriani: I don't think many would agree, but this is, imo, Satch's best work. His guitar just sings the entire song. So emotive, yet complex and modal. Love love love this song.

Comfortably Numb - Pink Floyd: Of course this is in here. Great example of Gilmour's distinctive style.

I could list solos all day, but those are my top 3.

"Be" by Marty Friedman. The rest of the tune is a bag of poo, but the solo... Man, what a solo.

Sweet Child O' Mine: a classic EVERYONE just knows and likes
Mr. Crowley: such emotion, Randy is God :)
Nothing Else Matters: pure emotion
Tornado Of Souls: long live Marty Friedman, epic solo

I have never heard of maybe 80% of the solo's so far...

What would be really cool is if somebody would be to file all the solo's mentioned, maybe alphabetical in order, then whoever wanted too could check them out one at a time over YouTube, ext.

It would provide playing idea's and new inspiration. (sometimes a rut sets in)

Someone fancy doing it??

:)

Have you guys tried Grooveshark?

Grooveshark - Listen to Free Music Online - Internet Radio - Free MP3 Streaming

Randy Rhoads - Live unaccompanied solo from Tribute. I get goosebumps just typing it.
EVH - Push comes to shove
vito bratta - when the children cry

Some are crossing my mind right now:

Let It Be, the album version - George pours some real emotion on this one, classic

Only you can rock me - UFO - Schenker makes beautiful melodies, just listen to it.

Rocket Queen - GNR - Slash - Completely LOVE this.

Mediterranean Sundance/Rio Ancho - Al Di Meola with Paco the Lucia, the Friday Night In San Francisco opening title - It takes my breath away.

There are endless others...

Doors-any of them
Aqualung-Jethro Tull
Hotel Calif.
But the ultimate for me is Duane Allman, particularly Loan me a Dime...put it on in the car,hit repeat...nothing better for me.
