Axe-Fx III Firmware 29.00 Public Beta

Seems like I'm hearing a lot more background artifacts than on previous FWs, feels like my hi-gain presets are "messier" when I'm palm muting.

After moving my guitar around a bunch, the extra noise seems to be coming from the AxeFX itself. At least, it gets really bad when I move my pickup near the unit. I'll try to post an audio clip in the morning.
I experienced something similar and I thought to myself, "oh the power must be funky today or something" but if this is indeed the case then this is quite strange! I'll also try to record a clip and see if this is a FW thing.

So I did a quick A/B of the previous firmware woth this one using my favourite CCV 2B amp model, and the differences are pretty negligible:

I hear a very very tiny difference in the highs. But very little difference otherwise. I also did a null test in my DAW and it confirmed what I thought I was hearing. Virtually nothing played back with the phase flipped and I had to absolutey crank the monitors to the max to hear the resulting audio which was little more than a few hisses and disses here and there. Maybe the update affects some amps more than others but I guess higher gain amps are relatively close.

The 6160 Block Lead keeps sounding worse with each firmware...🤷‍♂️
Yeah something definitely is rotten in the state of 5150 Block Letters. Ever since the remaster and the re-doing of the cold clippers, the 5150 seems to have lost its aggressive attack. Initially I felt that lowering the MV, NFB, and Bias kinda helped but after doing some A/B-ing, there’s not a lot that brings out the response of the pre-remaster Block Letter. Similar experience with the SLO but that has always been smooth and not as aggressive. But it’s even less so now. It’s a shame those models are pretty much an uphill battle now when it comes to dialling them in for modern metal tones.

Would you Like to share the preset please?
I could never get a good sound from the CCV but that sounds killer!

Sure! Here's a preset that I use that has all my high gain Marshall-based things in it (and a couple of additional ones):
The IR that I use with this is ML Sound Lab's Best IR in the World (which is free and you can find it on the forum) mixed in with their MEGA GREEN 57-C and 421-C at -12dB each. You don't really need the MEGA-GREEN mixed in but it gives a bit of sizzle and boom to the whole thing hich sounds great at home.

I don't know if it's my ears or not because they suck in the morning all the time... However I feel like I hear a little difference in the palm muting. The second version sounds a little softer which im assuming is the new firmware? But that could just be a you thing and not the axefx. Everything else sounds pretty much the same.

As an old crunch rocker, I'm always amazed at how you hear, or would want to hear, a difference in metal sound recordings. I would have preferred to use a Fender compressor clean amp and a cranked-up Marshall Plexi without a drive pedal for the comparison. But I'm not trained for metal sound either.

Agreed. As someone who has played guitar for almost 40 years the high gain metal sound just sounds like noise. Notes blend together almost indistinguishable.

To my ears the updated amps sound more like the real amps I have own or have owned over the years.

But in the end every players ears are tuned to what they hear :)

Here's the "Brian May" comparison between FW 28.07 and FW 29.00 beta. The same preset and the same DI recording is used for both recording.

FW 28.07

FW 29.00 beta

No issues here, and I like the more prominent higher frequencies in the new firmware. TBH it has been a point that I expected more from AXE with this preset.

* The preset "Doctor's Fav AC30 v4" is used for both recording, without any tweaking after the FW update. The preset is available at:

Thanks to those posting A/Bs tho I can't discern any A vs B difference between them, or here. Without any detail of what's changed more specifically, within the pre section, might be hard to set up an A/B that clearly highlights the difference (be interesting to see if our youtubers make an attempt).

The difference is slight, but I’m hearing a little less compression in the treble frequencies, which I’m interpreting subjectively as a bit more of a 3D or hi-fi quality.

I imagine a multiband comp squeezing the 4K range a teensy bit would be a good “pre 29” simulator.

FM3 user just lurking around—excited to see what’s new! At the same time, I’m like, do I really need anything else? I’m already super happy with how it sounds. My ears probably wouldn’t notice a difference without some A/B testing anyway. But still, I love seeing these updates. Gotta love that Fractal keeps improving the tone long after they’ve taken our money.

I'm hearing that, too. Noticed it in the first clips that were posted, as well.
