Axe fx 2 / internal microphone

Hi !

I take guitar lesson on skype (I play with headphones), my problem is that my teacher can either hear me talk or only hear me playing guitar because my computer only let me use the internal microphone or the Axe Fx as a microphone.

Do you guys know any devices I could use so I could do both at the same time ?

Thanks in advance !

my computer is a macbook pro mid 2009

Buy an audio interface with at least 2 channels. Use one for the axe, one for a mic. Set the interface as your sound card.

Which one would you suggest, I see a bunch on internet, focusrite or Behringer ?

Thanks for your help !

Cant go wrong with Focusrite 2i2, great bang for your buck. (Has Two inputs, goes in direct with USB) However, should you want or need more inputs in the future, getting a bigger model would be something to consider as well.

Plug the axe fx into and amp and speaker in the room and set the volume low, then use the microphone on your Mac to pick up your voice and the guitar in the room. This won't cost you $$$ on extra gear.

Isint that what he is doing already? Might be useful to bite the bullet and go ahead and get the Interface. But yeah honestly it would be serviceable for Skype lessons

Hi guys, finally have the scarlett 2i4, but still have the same problem, I can only choose one option for the microphone, any idea how i could fix this ?

the scarlett is connected to the axe fx, using two cables XLR and I put my headphones in the scarlett.
the axe fx and the scarlett are both connected to the computer

Thanks in advance !

I think I see the problem:
1) Sound input and output should be the new interface Scarlet USB (headphones connected to output of the interface)
2) Microphone should be plugged into one of the inputs on the interface
3) AxeFX should be plugged into one of the inputs on the interface (or pair if stereo is desired)
4) Interface should be plugged into one of your Mac USB ports (I see that it is from your screen shots)

Now if you speak into the mic, you should hear it in your headphones, strum a chord or two, that should be in your headphones too!

I think OP is using his Internal mic,in which case he needs to create an Aggregate device...

Dude you can make an aggregate device, that combines the axe fx and the MacBook mic, it's built in to os x. In audio midi setup, click the plus sign and add aggregate device. Click the boxes for what you want to have active, built in mic and axefx, then you can combine the input and then use headphones to monitor. Somehow. If that doesn't work, download Soundflowerbed, that lets you route audio from anywhere to anywhere program to program, and then you can activate Soundflower in the aggregate device too.

Yup, finally works, thanks for the help everyone, appreciate it ! :)
Hey Dorian, would you be able to post your exact setup and the changes/options you selected in the MacBook to get all this working? I’m in the same situation with regard to taking Skype lessons but cannot use my external speakers that would disturb my neighbors...

Moreover, seems like based on the "aggregate device" method, you don't actually need your Scarlet interface at all?

Thanks!!
