Anyone using a SPDIF to AES cable/adapter?

I want to hook up my Ultra digitally to my Apogee Rosetta A/D converters (which goes to a Digi 002r to run Pro Tools)

I run SPDIF between the Digi 002r and Rosetta, and cant change that

I want to run the AES connection, but since there is only an AES Out on the Ultra, i need what the AxeFX manual calls a "commonly available AES to SPDIF adaptor cable"

well i live in Los Angeles, in Burbank no less (tons of studios, suppliers, audio/video stores, etc) and im basically reading and being told that there is no such thing.

there are converter boxes that convert AES to SPDIF, and they are $150-200

the company Lynx makes something that looked like it would work but i called them and they said it probably wouldnt since it was designed for one of their pieces of gear

i emailed fractal support last week... no answer. so, i re-sent the msg this morning, and got a reply within 10 min... it was a single line answer saying "The Rosetta has SPDIF In and Out. Just use that. Much easier."

uh yea, no shit man, im familiar with my equipment... CMON... dont tell people to use a "commonly available" anything when it doesnt even exist!

it ANYONE running SPDIF to AES??

hey Zer0th, thanks for the tip buddy but im a few steps ahead of you. did you read any of those google links? should i maybe buy that $600 converter?

Rome - i just took a digital SPDIF cable, and following directions i found online, i removed one end and connected an AES (XLR) connection. while this technically works, i am getting the occasional digital "spike" or "glitch", so its not ideal. i found that Rane link before, and not only is it mostly over my head, but theres nowhere on there to buy one, just make one i guess... so again, this cable i need is not "commonly available" as said in the manual, as now im sending these pages to cable companies for quotes on custom cables....

I guess I am confused. Is the chain not Axe --> Digi 002 --(SPDIF to SPDIF) --> Rosetta?

Not sure why he needs a converter. Go SPDIF out from Axe to SPDIF in on Digi or AES out on Axe to AES in on Digi.

But i am a noob...so what do i know?

I believe he is saying that both the digital in and out from the digi 002 are going to the rossetta.

thats correct.

as of now am i still using the Ultra's analog outs, doing an extra conversion but at least I am getting the Apogee sound going in...

but why do we need a rosetta, if the Axe does a reasonable a/d conversion and spdif? why not just go from the axe to the daw? Is it the 48kHz limitation from the Axe?

Yes it is a limitation. But he was working on getting a digital signal to his DAW. His other digital connections were in use.
