Amp line out into AxeFXII, set up help

For years in the studio I would use a load box with a line out for my amp signal, going into a POD XT, bypassing the Amp modeling and using only Cab sims & FXs. Im trying it out with the Axe for the first time, and not getting the expected results, so Id like to confirm that I have things set correctly.

In this scenario I want to A/B my Badger 18 head to the Badger 18 amp sim. Ive got a B18 patch using a custom IR I shot from my last recording session with it. I recorded a quick take using my regular Badger patch, then I:

1. Bypassed the Amp Block, making sure its Bypass is set to Thru
2. Line Out (unbalanced) of the amp/load box into the rear Input 1 Left.
3. Changed Input 1 Left Select to "Rear" under I/O>Audio
4. Set Input 1 A/D to 65% (not even tickling the red with a single coil guitar)

I think that it. So far, I have to crank the Line Out level, and im not even get the full signal strength id like to get. The sound is also a bit dark. Just wondering if im missing something with the setup, I wouldnt be surprised! lol

Thanks in advance for any help!

in addition to "Rear" in the I/O menu, what Input Mode is selected, left only, stereo or l+r sum?

Afaik, without an amp block in the grid, you will have to turn the output 1 knob all the way clockwise, in order to get unity gain.

This. If you connect input to output with nothing but shunts in the grid, and you turn the output knob all the way up, you'll get out exactly the same level you put in.

If you need more level, put a null filter at the front of your chain and set its level to suit.

At this point I think it is an issue with the load box/line out I was using, I just wanted to make sure I had the settings correct in the AxeFX since there are several! Thx

You could be right. The load box's line out should have plenty of level to drive the Axe-Fx.

I'm curious: how are you determining that you're not getting enough level?
