1x12 vs 2x12 vs 4x12

If a 1x12, 2x12, and 4x12 all have the same speakers and the mic is right up next to the cone, shouldn't the difference in tone be really small?
Not really. What the mic hears is influenced by the size of the cab, the other three speakers screaming away, the mic's distance from the floor (which will vary depending on which of the four speakers you're miking)...

And open vs closed, cabinet resonant frequency, internal dimensions, etc... ;)

I'm a 1x12 guy all day. Same with IRs. I find the sound more pleasing and "real" than multiple speaker cabs. That being said, some 4x12's IRs really do sound good, but I prefer 1x12 actual cabinets.
