šŸ”„Introducing ICONS - Amp Modeling + FX - Plugins & Standalone

Love the concept. I'm sure it's got great sounds. but not much in the way of effects - no pitch block, limited delays, etc. Only one flavor of amp?

So unless there's a little more bundled in for that 300 bucks think I will stick with my AFX 3 and FM9. No shade against the product, sure it will really suit some needs. But for me anyway, not this time around. I need to see something that suits my use case a little more.

I’m new to the whole iLok thing…

I read a lot of ā€˜hell no’ but no reason for that decision.

What are the disadvantages/cons?

I wanted to post first as a response to that recent comment on this forum which stated that Fractal Audio would never ever release a plugin, but I thought I'd leave it to you to find that topic and link back to here ;-)
From an interview from 2011 (the internet is forever!) Cliff and the gang had been thinking about plugins. The main concern with releasing one was around piracy. Seems that has been resolved now!

I think a lot of the criticism came from when it was first implemented a decade (?) ago, and required a physical USB drive to be plugged in in order to use the software. Now, you simply "register" your software with iLok software. The only issue comes when you have too many devices you're trying to install the software on, or are changing computers altogether. But I presume FAS will be happy to help in those situations.

You can deactivate your own computers or iLok can do it remotely if a computer dies. iLok support is also really good.

On our side, @Mark Day and @Michael Pickens have been learned to effectively deal with customer iLok issues since the early FAS-FX Reverb days. One huge advantage I've found is that by keeping all of my licenses in one place, I no longer FORGET WHAT I OWN!

Are you giving full choices: Cloud, Machine and Physical?

I am curious, what is the reason for no ilok? I haven't had an issue with it.
There are horror stories out there - bricked machines, inability to unlock paid-for software under pressure in a high-stakes session, etc - but lots of high end software does use it, and many pros don't let that turn them off.

Yeah but sometimes people accidentally make two iLok usernames, one that's something like RifferMcDuck, the other RifferMcDuck@gmail.com, and they aren't aware they've been logging in with two separate usernames for years and end up with multiple plugins on each of them and they eventually accuse iLok of removing a plugin from their account and then iLok informs them they have two usernames and they spend the rest of their life in great shame

To be fair, I recall reading a post either from Cliff or someone else from Fractal, who downplayed or outright stated that a Fractal plug-in was essentially out of the question due to concerns of backwards engineering or someone ā€œcracking the codeā€, or something to that effect. That Fractal wouldn’t or didn’t want to take the risk. I don’t have the means (or time) to search for that post, but I’m quite positive I read it. It was a few years ago, if I recall correctly, so perhaps the Fractal team solved that problem and it’s no longer a concern.
