Low and High Cut For Live Performance

I have a separate preset for each song with IEMs on output 1, FOH on output 2, Bass out for FOH or amp (depending on venue) on output 4. I use the parametric EQ for each output in settings, rather than using PEQ block, rolling off at 100hz and 12db and 7.5k 12db with a dip at 3k, -3db to reduce...

Bar graph representing diff between axeiii, fm9, fm3?

I would love to use an FM9 live...but I'm running bass through it, sometimes with sample triggers, sustained synth tones and other craziness that has me hitting 80% on the Axe3mk1.

The importance of Mono for live guitar playing

When I'm playing live, I just want a great tone and to engage the audience. Stereo comes with a lot of variables that could take away from that, whereas performing my best and getting into it will make way more of an impact, and does. Every show I am told how amazing my guitar sound is. Every...

    Headrush MK II?

Using 3 of the MKI8s daisy chained for club volume and they sound just fine. Just roll off the highs above 11khz and it will cut through nice and loud. My band always gets positive feedback from the audience about our sound. It's a nice, cheap option. Most of the time I just don't feel like...

Output 1 for stage cabs and output 2 out to FOH?

I run output 1 FOH or FRFR, depending on the venue, output 2 to IEMs. The EQ option for each output is invaluable. I have different low and hi passes for each.

    Axe-Fx III Firmware 23.02 Release

Upgraded from v21. I switched to the Rev Red 3 for all of my band presets. I just love the feel and sound, right out of the box. The gapless switching is like a dream come true...completely seemless

    Warranty coverage

I got an early AXIII and had an issue with the output board a few months later. They mailed me a new board and let me open it up and replace it. Easier than installing a video card in a pc. Couldn't believe it.

Recommended Mic Preamp to record vocals thru axe?

I use a Focusrite. I’ll record vocals then “re-amp“ them through the Axe. I have a vocal preset I’ve constructed with the studio compressor and eq. Then I’ll just add various effects like delays reverbs until I get it sounding the way I like it.

    Axe-Fx III Firmware 23.00 Public Beta #1

This addresses the only complaint that I had. Gapless preset switching coupled with the setlist feature makes sound possibilities limitless. I can have a completely different rhythm guitar structure in one preset, a synth lead with accompanying droning synths in another, a lead preset with a...

    Advice for large outdoor venues

I avoid expansive reverbs for live application, in general. There's always some natural reverb in the venue that can muddy things. For heavy distortion, I eliminate reverb entirely, even delay for rhythm. I would think the same principals apply to large outdoor venues subject to slap back and...

Tactics for doubling / thickening stereo sound live when only 1 guitarist

I've been down this road before. If you want everyone to have a good experience, mono is the way, unless you have two separate guitar players. Stereo is cool for IEMs. but I find live I'm not thinking about ping pong delays or panning for a guitar break, I'm just feeding off the energy from the...

Axe-Fx Firmware Version 21.02 Public Beta (Beta 2)

I actually recorded direct guitar and reamped with 16.4 a couple of weeks ago into a Logic project, so in the coming weeks I will have direct AB for high gain, edge of breakup, and clean to compare.
  15. psychomanteum7

    Axe-Fx Firmware Version 21.01

16.4 to 21.1 impression, chunkier, edge of breakup just feels better. Not as big a jump as Cygnus, but I feel the difference more than hear it...and it's nice. my existing presets seem to be holding up well, so far.
  16. psychomanteum7

    I always nuke high treble

Can't load Gift of Tone presets to my Axe3

Hey, thanks everyone! We have our last show for a while at the end of the month, then I plan on doing the update. My presets for some songs are really complicated and would be easy to break, so I don't want to chance it. I will be doing a comparison video, as well.

I have a Marshall 1960a 4x12 and a Quilter 201 I used as a poweramp just to get a sense of what it sounded like. It was LOUD with no noise, very nice. Solo over sound

So to anyone else looking for how to get the synth block to just generate sound without playing guitar (like immediately when playing a scene): in the synth block just select "Track" to off. You can then change the generated noise to your liking.

I'm sure this is somewhere in the forum already, but I apparently lack the terminology for a proper search to find it. Anyone sending midi from the Axe to a DAW to trigger samples?

To clarify more, I have my Axe connected to the Scarlet with a Midi cable (out to in), and my Macbook connected to the Scarlett via USB. EQing for Rooms

I start the low cut at 100hz and high cut at 11khz for guitar/samples output 1's globlal EQ. Makes the guitar sit in the mix in either FOH or FRFR situations. Pretty sure the sound guy (girl) isn't doing much with EQ, but people always say our sound is amazing. Fletcher-Munson is very real.

Anyone sending midi from the Axe to a DAW to trigger samples?

I've been using Beatmaker 3 on my ipad successfully, but I would like to transition to my Macbook. Ultimately, the goal is to run IEM mixes and trigger samples from the same Logic Pro X instance. FRFR speaker recommendation?

I have 4 FRFRs. My Friedman ASC12 is great for playing by myself. It can get pretty loud, but I find it has trouble keeping up with live acoustic drums in a heavy music setting. It can get pretty close to the "amp in the room" feel, so I use it for solo practice/writing. This FRFR is heavy...

Axe-Fx III Mk II initial impressions

I read the manual while it was on the way, in 2019. I took a week off from work and spent 72+ hours going through all parameters, learning midi etc. I found that paid huge dividends in understanding subsequent tutorials and figuring new things out, ever since. You get what you put in with this unit.
  40. psychomanteum7

    First time using live!

I've taken to cutting below 68hz and above 11khz for Output 1, and I find it sits great in the mix with the band. This works in small clubs where I'm using FRFRs, no PA, and for larger venues going direct. The sound guy almost always mentions how great it sounds. In my case, I run samples...

Why are so many people not relying on their ears anymore?

I like having starting points. I heard someone demoing the PRS Archon and was blown away, so I built my sound based on that. I use two HR 108s, one for drummer as a guitar monitor, one for me. For larger shows, I just have direct out to FOH, but for clubs, I bring my Friedman ASC12 along to crank up the output. Using all three FRFRs sounds massive. I do a low cut at around 68hz and a high cut around 11khz in the...

We cannot keep a bass player so now I am the bass player (and guitar player)

With work and the holidays, a video isn't in the cards for a while. I will put together a basic preset of what I'm doing and post it over the next week with some explanation.
  50. psychomanteum7

Just purchased the Axe-FX III Mark II..

I run guitar, bass (blackglass 7k, no amp block), samples/synth through effect chains, and vocals - using the original AFIII. I typically get just under 80% cpu utilization. You should be just fine with the mark ii.
  51. psychomanteum7

We cannot keep a bass player so now I am the bass player (and guitar player)

Agreed on all counts. This method is more suited to my genre (Progressive Metal). I switch to presets where it’s just bass and drums for parts which can give that bass and drum interplay.
  52. psychomanteum7

We cannot keep a bass player so now I am the bass player (and guitar player)

Haha I’m no Paul McCartney, but the bass player struggle is real.
  53. psychomanteum7

I considered that route. We like the ability to change things up and improv parts.

We cannot keep a bass player so now I am the bass player (and guitar player)

So I figured out how to use the virtual capo to follow my guitar an octave down and plunge down two octaves when I play above a certain frequency. The tracking is astounding. We played this way as a trio and people said it was the best we’ve sounded. Would anyone be interested if I made a video...
  56. psychomanteum7

Call me crazy, but I might buy another one.

I bought the MkII and have it in my studio for recording and auditioning presets. My MKI is affixed in a giant rack for shows. Should something happen to it, I can swap them out while it gets repaired. I think this is totally reasonable for a gigging musician.
  57. psychomanteum7

    Gonna get weird today…

Pitch follower has changed my life. Rhythm is basically dry, then I go up to the higher registers to do a lead, flange creeps in and soaring delays start to take over. It has virtually eliminated the pedal dance.
  58. psychomanteum7

It's finally time to say goodbye to my pedals.

I'm selling pedals in order to grab an FM3 for shows and to use the AF3 for studio/backup. The only pedals I'm holding on to is the Electroharmonix B3 Organ pedal (the axe can't do that yet) and my Boss SY300 (axe can't do that yet either.) Every other pedal I've heard I could begin thinking of...

    Energyball and Cygnus

So I upgraded today…someone on a Cygnus thread said that you have to dig into the strings more to achieve gain. Kind of like a real tube amp. I can confirm this, but you are rewarded for the effort. There’s clearly more texture and string definition. The only downside is that my technique is in...

    Energyball and Cygnus

I use the EMI open backed cab IR with it and get a great "amp in the room" sound through my FRFRs. For recording I use two different IRs panned L/R and dig that sound. The Engl cab with this amp sounded too "fizzy" but I love the feel of the amp. It actually sounds surprisingly good for edge of...

Overwhelmed by cabs to be honest....

Use your ears! When I’m selecting cabs, I just scroll through and try a variety of cabs with different speaker configurations, micing, open or closed back etc. until I find the sound that feels right. I’m usually surprised by what I settle on.

Quarantine boredom resulted in routing to output 3 and to my Sunn Model T Reissue Amp Input through my Marshall 1960a slanted 4x12. I was curious to see how real it would feel compared to the actual tube amp experience I am used to. I play 8 string Metal with the Engl Powerball for high gain...

    Axe-Fx III Firmware Version 10.02

Right away, the Engl Powerball I use predominantly had more defined bass and definition. Getting into the cleaner amps, chimey sums it up. Some of the Plexi style amps yield pinch harmonics with very little gain. It also appears that switching is faster and some bugs were ironed out. I’m not...

    Friedman ASC-10 initial review

You got it. That turns red if the amp is pushed too hard. Most of the time, I don't exceed 12:00 on the volume knob if the source signal is set right.
  73. psychomanteum7

    Friedman ASC-10 initial review

There's an overload circuit with an LED indicator. I'd play through at the volume you're experiencing this, with the amp facing away from you to see if it's pegging the red. Amp may be going into protection mode intermittently.

    Axe-Fx 3, HS8 Studio Monitors and a Sonic Epiphany

Having played live with my Headrush and Friedman ASC12 a few times, I don’t personally find the accuracy as important for live application. My main concern is just being able to hear myself, which either solution accomplishes very well. Those Headrush FRFRs are the best bang for the buck.
  76. psychomanteum7

    Axe-Fx 3, HS8 Studio Monitors and a Sonic Epiphany

They sound amazing. I eq’d my main Metal/8 string tone just using a keyboard amp, originally. Looks like it tranaslated very well, as I had no urge to change anything through the monitors. The stereo effects are very satisfying, and this is allowing me to write without being tempted to crank to...

When recording, are you guys using effects or adding effects later with plugin (or reamp with Fractal effects)?

My experiment this week is to record direct to DAW using Bias FX as the monitor (using iPad), then reamping through the Axe 3, tweaking effects during certain parts on the Axe to see what I like. I’ll use the FC6 and expression to switch during parts of the song like, like a performance. I find...

The first two weeks I had it, I probably spent 30-40 hours working and learning what was possible. That is not to say that it is that complicated, if you are essentially just looking for a basic setup with effects and (extremely) believable amp/cab emulation. I'm in two very dissimilar bands...

    Lag between scenes, anyone?

I noticed this, in particular when I had different amp channels in use back in November when I first purchased the Axe 3. Subsequent firmware revisions seem to have addressed this. I have the FC6 in use with firmware 5.05 with no issues, currently.

[solved] Why does my FC-6 not work? Firmware 1.04?

Yes, I mentioned that above. If the replacement does the same, I'll be sending my Axe III back as this is the second problem I will have had with it involving a connector. Guess this will be a good test for their warranty policy.
