what's your go to spacey Reverb model?

I'm currently trying to dial in a spacey, wide, realistic hall reverb that doesn't sound like a public restroom. And I'm failing. For more subtle reverbs I like the Large Hall, sometimes the Concert Hall, but right now I'm getting nowhere. As soon as I get it big and wet enough I have harsh...

    Oversampling Mode

thanks Yek, the numbers are impressive, and I never noticed any latency in the Axe FX. But I do notice a sonic difference between those settings
  11. phil92

    Oversampling Mode

I just noticed this setting recently. Does 'Min. Latency' sound harsher while 'Best Quality' is warmer and more organic or am imagining things?

    Tonewood doesn’t matter

except that A. Leo didn't use Bubinga, Wenge or Koa which are still considered tonewoods and B. specific woods have been selected by Violin makers for centuries explicitly for their sonic charateristics it's neither a new word nor a new phenomenon, although I will admit that very likely...
  13. phil92

    Tonewood doesn’t matter

we established that the wood affects the tone. We can also agree that there are categories or species with distinctive characteristics. But a guitar builder will (for the most part) ignore all of those and select his material purely based on availability, optics and price? I don't think that's...

    Tonewood doesn’t matter

my local Bunnings is selling framing timber. Have a look: https://www.bunnings.co.nz/products/building-hardware/timber/framing-timber the relevance to the current discussion is that a type of wood might be categorized based on its application. Not necessarily to sound 'cool'.
  15. phil92

    Tonewood doesn’t matter

I don't disagree, I just want to comment on one point: "wood is an incredibly inconsistent medium sonically. It's organic, and ultimately as random and unique as anything else living, or once living." This is true, but that doesn't mean that we can't make predictions with some degree of...

    Tonewood doesn’t matter

when I say tone wood I am referring to the wood (and types of wood) that is traditionally used in guitar building; mahogany, alder, ash, maple, ebony, rosewood to name the most popular, and treated, cut and selected for this purpose. I think that's what we're discussing. And the fact that...

    Tonewood doesn’t matter

Getting back to the tone/wood topic; I live quite remote, next stop Antarctica, and the market for high quality instruments here is quite dry. So I need to buy online and have no way of trying before buying. I will keep the good ones and pass on, sell or trade, the ones that don’t resonate with...
  23. phil92

    Tonewood doesn’t matter

yes, absolutely. A great guitar will make me play better, will inspire me. Playing a truly good guitar to me feels like I'm getting more out than I'm putting in. While a mediocre one makes me fight for every note and then fall short. It's an uphill battle. Driving with your hand brake on.
  24. phil92

    Tonewood doesn’t matter

Guessing correctly is one thing. But stating they all sound the same? I’ll have to admit I had A as the Les Paul and D as the PRS, B was clearly the strat, and while not familiar with the guitar I had C as the Harley Benton. Also 4000 =! 40000 and 2500 =! 25000

Don’t ask me why I let myself get sucked into arguments on the internet, I can’t explain it. And this one in particular really rubs me the wrong way. So many people stating wood selection in guitars makes no sonic difference whatsoever ‘because the pickups are magnetic and not a microphone’...

Question about the Mark series graphic EQ modeling

sure. But if you go out to buy roses for your S.O., you want to get roses and not kale. Trust me. In other words, if I am going for a sound that I associate with a Deluxe Reverb I'd like to be able to use that model in the Axe FX and expect a match (and I haven't been disappointed so far), and...

Question about the Mark series graphic EQ modeling

you can lose the /s, because you're exactly right; we do need to measure these things (or someone does) because our perception is subjective. Depending on the context things can sound very different to you even when they are objectively the same. Then your listening experience will have a major...

What’s your choice of Amp model(s) with best “feel under the fingers” ?

I like a hot bias on Marshalls and Fenders, but tend to bias the Mark amps cooler in the Axe FX, 45-50%. It could also be the volume or whatever power amp / monitors you are playing through
  33. phil92

What’s your choice of Amp model(s) with best “feel under the fingers” ?

  35. phil92

What’s your choice of Amp model(s) with best “feel under the fingers” ?

to me it's the 1968 plexi. In the Axe FX I try to emulate that by increasing sag, using a hot bias of 66%, variac down to 80% and using some gain enhancer of 2-3 it's juicy, spongy and elastic kick it with a klon and drench it in some 2290 delay and it's a lot of fun

250$ for Metallica Black Album Preset

the 'no tone match' condition speaks to the OP's lack of comprehension what tone match is: an EQ. That's it, it's not going to affect the gain structure or dynamics. It's not a magic wand. He has explained he wanted no tone match because he wants to dissect the preset and learn from it, that's...

sorry for the super late reply! I used an IR Player for the fullres IRs because I already have two Cab blocks in the preset: one with for the Vibroverb and one for the Super. any GAS you have past that point is purely for guitars. My appetite for amps and pedals has been thoroughly satiated by the Axe FX III. Guitar Rig was a source of constant frustration. Axe-Fx III Firmware 22.00 Public Beta (Beta 6)

this is nuts. I just played with my Deluxe Reverb preset that uses a blend of regular and fullRes IRs and swapped them out for one single DynaCab IR. Either I am just absolutely shit at mixing IRs or these new IRs are just a total game changer. It felt much more open, realistic and organic.

when work gets too hectic, usually towards the end of a show, I like to grab my headphones, block out all the chatter, set teams to do not disturb and put this on that's when I get the last shot notes and fixes done and it keeps me from getting too snarky upon show prod's panicked requests

JP II c Red sounds muffled compared to Mk IV Mid Gain in FW 21.00 - with audio and preset

they used to be much closer in FW 20 and lower, with FW 21 they moved in opposite directions; the mark IV lost low end and got brighter, while the JPIIc lost quite a bit of high end. You are saying this new behaviour is expected and correct? To clarify: I’m not surprised they sound different...

  65. phil92

JP II c Red sounds muffled compared to Mk IV Mid Gain in FW 21.00 - with audio and preset

possible. But I wouldn't have expected the Mark IV to move in the opposite direction then; it gets brighter while the JPIIc gets very muffled. Also, none of these use any speaker thump or drive and I set both to the same impedance curve.

distortion also amplifies unwanted noise, reveals problems with your damping technique, so there's that. If what I want to practice will be played/performed heavily overdriven, I will practice it that way. If it's going to be clean, I'll practice clean. No need to overthink this.

I usually start with an intuitive approach, picking some IRs that would fit the cab I'd be pairing with the particular amp. I'd populate the 4 slots of the cab block, record a riff or a solo line to the looper, let it play and start switching. Most times I end up with combinations, having a...
