    Weird 8-string tone issue

Are you 100% sure it's not speaker placement? The sound clip sounds fine to me. I don't hear any sharp overtones on my end. It sounds like a pretty well-balanced guitar sound, in all honesty. That tells me it's a problem with the room you're in.

Any AxeFx 8 string players out there?

Tube screamer + 5150 + bright IR is my usual go-to for 7 and 8 strings. A trick I like to use that helps with those lower tunings is to go into the advanced settings on the tube screamer and increase the high end cutoff from 800hz to 1500hz. It helps bring out the "voice" and throatiness of...

Why some amps initially sound bad?

The guitar can really make all the difference. ALL the presets sound like shit on my Ibanez until I tweak them heavily. 80% of them sounded absolutely perfect at gig volume with my PRS custom 22, or my stratocaster. You've got to consider what the presets where made with/designed for.

Recently got my first AxeFX-XL, any reason why most presets are "dark" sounding? Is this normal?

Some food for thought: in the limited and glorious time in which I owned a PRS Custom 22, the Axe Fx presets sounded absolutely perfect, no tweaks needed. With my Ibanez, however, it's mud city until I tweak things extensively, no exceptions. So I agree with the sentiment that the guitar...

I'm a bad example, but I guess I should chime in for the sake of variety: I make a new preset every time I play. Even at band practices. If I need to have a preset made gun-to-my-head-quick, then it's just any Fender for clean, any Marshall for dirty, and 5150 for metal/lead. If I have more...
